Thermodynamic properties of N-octyl- and N-dodecylnicotinamide chlorides in water

Densities, heat capacities and enthalpies of dilution at 25°C and osmotic coefficients at 37°C were measured for N-octyl- and N-dodecylnicotinamide chlorides in water over an extended concentration region. Partial molar volumes, heat capacities, relative enthalpies and nonideal free energies and entropies at 25°C were derived as a function of the surfactant concentration. For both surfactants, plots of volumes, enthalpies and free energies vs. concentration are regular whereas those of heat capacities and entropies present anomalies at about 0.8 and 0.1m for the octyl and dodecyl compounds, respectively. Toxic adenoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma in a patient with Graves' disease.

A case of a very rare association of toxic adenoma and papillary carcinoma with Graves’ disease is presented. A 34-year-old woman developed Graves’ disease with mild ophthalmopathy. An ultrasound revealed diffuse thyroid enlargement with a hypoechoic pattern and a hypoechoic nodule with regular edges of 1.6 cm in diameter at the lower pole of the left lobe. A thyroid 131I scintiscan showed a diffuse and homogeneous 131I distribution. The 131I uptake (RAIU) was elevated. We describe two novel monoclonal antibodies specific for glial filament protein (GFP), i.e., GF12.23 and GF12.24 (both IgG2a]. These cross-react over a broad range of species with epitopes located in the alpha-helical rod domain typical of all intermediate filament (IF) proteins. These monoclonal antibodies were used, in conjunction with other monoclonal GFP antibodies, rabbit antiserum to GFP, and various antibodies to other cytoskeletal proteins, to examine the occurrence of GFP in cells outside of the central nervous system of rodents, cows, and humans. Hereditary papillary renal carcinoma (HPRC) is characterized by multiple, bilateral papillary renal carcinomas. Previously, we demonstrated missense mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of the MET proto-oncogene in HPRC and a subset of sporadic papillary renal carcinomas. In this study, we screened a large panel of sporadic papillary renal carcinomas and various solid tumors for mutations in the MET proto-oncogene. Summarizing these and previous results, mutations of the MET proto-oncogene were detected in 17/129 sporadic papillary renal carcinomas but not in other solid tumors. The topical anti-inflammatory activity of extracts from Cassia angustifolia, Rheum palmatum, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense and Scutellaria baicalensis, plants used in traditional East Asian medicine against different skin disorders, was studied. Though in different degree, all the extracts significantly inhibited the edema induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), in both single or multiple application, oxazolone, and arachidonic acid (AA). None of the extracts inhibited in vitro the activity of phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) from Naja naja.

Abstract Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) is a reversed-phase mode with mobile phases containing an organic solvent and a micellised surfactant. Most procedures developed in MLC are implemented in the isocratic mode, since the general elution problem in chromatography is less troublesome. Micellar Liquid Chromatography: A Worthy Technique for the Determination of β-Antagonists in Urine Samples

Several beta-antagonists (acebutolol, atenolol, celiprolol, labetalol, metoprolol, nadolol, propranolol) were determined in urine samples with fluorometric detection after direct injection, in less than 15 min, with a micellar mobile phase of 0.1 M sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), 15% propanol, and 1% triethylamine at pH 3. The limits of detection (38 criterion) were usually between 3 and 30 ng/mL. The addition of propanol and triethylamine and the reduction of the pH of the mobile phase improved the efficiency of the chromatographic peaks that was rather low in pure micellar eluents.
