Background: The development of graft vasculopathy may play a role in the long-term deterioration of hand grafts. The aim of study was to examine the patterns of the nailfold capillaries in hand transplant recipients. Methods: the study was performed on six patients who received hand transplantation. To normalize for the effect of immunosuppression an age- and sex-matched group of 12 patients with active kidney transplant was selected. Bone marrow biopsy in Hodgkin's lymphoma

In the study of patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) the evaluation of bone marrow biopsy (BMB) can be difficult. In this review we analyze the main diagnostic features and the clinical risk factors of BM involvement. Although the role of BMB is criticized by some authors, its value is irreplaceable in the staging of HL and in the diagnosis of primary medullary HL. The Ann Arbor staging committee criteria should be revised and updated in the light of the current immunohistochemical studies that give a fundamental help in the diagnostic process. A single BMB should be adequate for diagnosis in most instances. In cases of suspicious involvement a controlateral BMB could be performed.

In a multicontinental, cross-sectional study we characterized ocular motor function in 72 genetically proven patients from twelve countries by means of video-oculography. Properties of tuberomammillary histamine neurones and their response to galanin.

Histaminergic neurones in the tuberomammillary nucleus possess electrophysiological properties which distinguish them from other neurones in their neighborhood. Their resting potential is -50 mV and they are spontaneously active at about 2 Hz in a slice preparation. They display a transient outward rectification and an anomalous inward rectification. Bath application of galanin (0.1 microM) reduced their firing rate significantly and hyperpolarized them slightly.

Benzodiazepine- and alcohol-induced ataxias in rodents have been proposed to be affected by the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor alpha 6 subunit, which contributes to receptors specifically expressed in cerebellar granule cells. We have studied an alpha 6 -/- mouse line for motor performance and drug sensitivity. These mice, as a result of a specific genetic lesion, carry a precise impairment at their Golgi-granule cell synapses. This study aimed to evaluate the associations among serum 17beta-estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), bone geometric properties, and mineral density in 248 healthy girls between the ages of 10 and 13 yr old. The left tibial shaft was measured by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (Stratec XCT-2000; Stratec Medizintechnik, GmbH, Pforzheim, Germany). Port-wine stain (PWS) is a benign capillary malformation that most commonly occurs in the head and neck. It is present at birth and progresses over time. It is formed by progressive dilatation of post-capillary venules and is associated with hypertrophy and nodularity with increasing age, leading to cosmetic disfigurement and psychological aggravation. It is caused by genetic mosaicism in GNAQ and GNA11 genes. Histopathology is the gold standard for assessment of PWS but it is invasive and may cause scarring. Ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) represents a common complication after myocardial infarction. The valve is anatomically normal and the incompetence is the result of papillary muscles displacement and annular dilatation, causing leaflets tethering. Functionally the leaflets present a restricted systolic motion due to tethering forces that displaces the coaptation surface toward the left ventricle apex.
