Male breast cancer: Reconstructive surgery

The conventional treatment for male breast cancer consists of modified radical mastectomy with axillary sentinel node biopsy and/or axillary lymph node dissection in case of lymph node-positive disease. However, breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is gaining popularity also among men. In both cases, surgery leaves an aesthetic disfigurement that impacts patient well-being and quality of life. Thus, even if male breast has a different social and emotional role than female’s one, male breast reconstruction deserves the same importance. The aim of this chapter is to give a comprehensive review on latest indications and strategies for the post-oncological reconstructive surgery of the male breast.

The effect of dibutyryl cyclic AMP (DB-c-AMP; 3 X 10(-4)-3 X 10(-3) M) on electrically induced twitch and high potassium (142.4 mM KCl)-induced contracture tension was studied in papillary muscles from normal and reserpinized cats ([Ca]0 1.8 mM; 25 degrees C; pH 7.4). In both groups of preparations, the increase in twitch tension evoked by DB-c-AMP was accompanied by an abbreviation of the time to peak force and of relaxation time. In the same preparations, the high potassium contracture was markedly depressed by DB-c-AMP in a concentration-dependent manner. Objectives: To evaluate graft types used for maxillary sinus augmentation and review success rates of dental implants inserted in these areas, analyzing the graft materials used, implant surface types and the moment of implant placement. Study Design: A meta-analytic study reviewing articles on sinus augmentation published during the last ten years. Results: 3,975 implants placed in sinus augmentations (with bony windows) were registered, of which 3,749 implants survived, a survival rate of 94.3%. We conducted a trial of the treatment of this brain tumor by intensive postoperative chemotherapy alone.After surgery, children received three cycles of intravenous chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, vincristine, methotrexate, carboplatin, and etoposide) and intraventricular methotrexate. Purpose To evaluate benefits and side effects of bandage soft contact lens (BSCL) insertion after LASIK in relation to patients’ characteristics. Design Prospective, randomized, bicenter comparative investigational trial. Participants One hundred patients (200 eyes) with myopia and/or myopic astigmatism. Methods Each patient underwent consecutive (Marburg, Germany) or simultaneous (Mainz, Germany) bilateral LASIK. At the end of the procedure, the first treated eye received a drop of ofloxacin and dexamethasone, patch, and transparent protective shield for 2 to 4 hours.
