Si bien históricamente en España se ha dado una persistente tendencia hacia las prácticas escolares basadas en la instrucción gramatical explícita, desde el siglo XIX, pedagogos, gramáticos y maestros (a través de la prensa, en las conferencias pedagógicas, en sus manuales...), entre otros, destacan los beneficios de una enseñanza orientada a promover la reflexión sobre las formas lingüísticas. Recent literature in the field of foreign language learning has indicated that classroom learning is not necessarily enough for students to acquire proficiency in a foreign language. Learners who achieve a high level in the target language often combine work in the classroom with activities outside it.
