The impact of the gut microbiome in Alzheimer's disease

2020

Abstract Alzheimer's disease is a devastating neurodegenerative disease clearly characterized by loss of synapses, changes in metabolism, and neuronal death in brain tissue. The impact of nutrition and other lifestyle factors on pathomechanisms has been extensively investigated in recent decades. However, one main issue has been out of focus during these research efforts—the human body is not a single entity but provides an ecological niche for a huge number of other organisms, its microbial flora. These microorganisms outnumber the host's genetic pool indisputably. While the human encodes for 30,000 genes, the microbiome of the gastrointestinal tract inherits a multitude of commensal micro…

Sterol Regulatory Element-binding Protein-1c Is Responsible for Cholesterol Regulation of Ileal Bile Acid-binding Protein Gene in Vivo

2002

Ileal bile acid-binding protein (I-BABP) is a cytosolic protein that binds bile acid (BA) specifically. In the ileum, it is thought to be implied in their enterohepatic circulation. Because the fecal excretion of BA represents the main physiological way of elimination for cholesterol (CS), the I-BABP gene could have a major function in CS homeostasis. Therefore, the I-BABP gene expression might be controlled by CS. I-BABP mRNA levels were significatively increased when the human enterocyte-like CaCo-2 cells were CS-deprived and repressed when CS were added to the medium. A highly conserved sterol regularory element-like sequence (SRE) and a putative GC box were found in human I-BABP gene pr…

An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance study of lithium insertion into thin films of tungsten trioxide II. Experimental results and compariso…

1995

Abstract Lithium insertion into amorphous thin films of tungsten trioxide (a-WO 3 ) prepared by thermal vacuum evaporation of WO 3 powder has been studied experimentally by chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy associated with electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). During cathodic polarization of the electrode and at short times two antagonistic processes occur. One is a non faradaic process and is associated with the expulsion of anions from the electrode surface under the effect of the electric field built in the electrolyte when a potential difference is imposed between the electrodes. The other one is the faradaic insertion of non-solvated lith…

Electrochemical treatment of wastewater contaminated by organics and containing chlorides: Effect of operative parameters on the abatement of organic…

2022

Abstract In the last years, large attention has been devoted to the electrochemical treatment of wastewater polluted by recalcitrant organics and containing chlorides. However, the utilization on an applicative scale of this route is limited by the fact that usually it is not possible to achieve high removals of organics without the generation of significant amounts of chlorinated by-products. Here, the role of several operative parameters on the performances of the process was systematically evaluated using phenol as a model organic pollutant. It was shown that the removal of phenol and TOC and the generation of many by-products including chlorophenols, chloroacetic acids, chlorate and per…

An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance study of lithium insertion into thin films of tungsten trioxide I. Modeling of the ionic insertion mec…

1995

A theoretical description of the mechanism of lithium insertion into amorphous thin films of tungsten trioxide (a-WO3) prepared by thermal vacuum evaporation of WO3 powder is presented. The model developed is based on the experimental results obtained by chronoamperometry and ac impedance spectroscopy associated with electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The electrode mass change and the current flowing through the electrochemical cell during cathodic polarization are simulta neously recorded. As expected, it can be observed that the insertion process is associated with a gain of mass of the inserted electrode at long times (t > 1 s). On the other hand at short times (t < 1 s)…

Interference Cancellation for LoRa Gateways and Impact on Network Capacity

2021

In this paper we propose LoRaSyNc (LoRa receiver with SyNchronization and Cancellation), a second generation LoRa receiver that implements Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) and time synchronization to improve the performance of LoRa gateways. Indeed, the chirp spread spectrum modulation employed in LoRa experiences very high capture probability, and cancelling the strongest signal in case of collisions can significantly improve the cell capacity. An important feature of LoRaSyNc is the ability to track the frequency and clock drifts between the transmitter and receiver, during the whole demodulation of the interfered frame. Due to the use of low-cost oscillators on end-devices, a s…

Alternative for improving gut microbiota: use of Jerusalem artichoke and probiotics in diet of weaned piglets

2014

AbstractThe aim of the study was to determine the effect of Jerusalem artichoke and probiotics on defence activity of intestinal cells of weaning pigs. One hundred eighty piglets (7 weeks old) were fed with basal feed supplemented with Jerusalem artichoke, Lactobacillus reuteri and Pediococcus pentosaceus. After 5 weeks, the piglets were slaughtered and the gastrointestinal contents and intestine samples were taken for analysis. Results demonstrated that in pigs fed basal diet with both probiotics and Jerusalem artichoke (5% of basal diet) (T3 group) had less (P<0.05) faecal Enterobacteriaceae microorganisms and coliforms and had more (P<0,05) faecal Lactobacillus than in pigs from ot…

Classical and relativistic n-body problem: from Levi-Civita to the most advanced interplanetary missions

2022

The n-body problem is one of the most important issue in Celestial Mechanics. This article aims to retrace the historical and scientific events that led the Paduan mathematician, Tullio Levi-Civita, to deal with the problem first from a classic and then a relativistic point of view. We describe Levi-Civita's contributions to the theory of relativity focusing on his epistolary exchanges with Einstein, on the problem of secular acceleration and on the proof of Brillouin's cancellation principle. We also point out that the themes treated by Levi-Civita are very topical. Specifically, we analyse how the mathematical formalism used nowadays to test General Relativity can be found in Levi-Civita'…
