Managing mergers – governancing institutional integration
2016
- Despite striking similarities, the adoption and implementation of policy shifts regarding higher education governance vary considerably across the globe, suggesting a mixed picture of diversification and isomorphism both within and across national higher education systems. By unpacking one particular structural reform process, this paper focuses on mergers as both a governance tool and a governance result in higher education. The paper analyzes the strategic decisions taken by Norwegian higher education institutions during 2014 in the light of a proposed national reform to merge institutions in order to enhance quality in higher education. The empirical basis of the paper consists of anal…
Death by Facial and Skull Injuries of a Motorcyclist Wearing a Full-Face Helmet: Case Report and Literature Review
2016
We describe a case of death by facial and skull fractures with brain injuries of a motorcyclist wearing a full-face helmet. A 40-year-old man driving a high-powered motorcycle crashed violently into the rear of a stopped car. The main results from the autopsy revealed the deformation of the left orbito-zygomatic and fronto-temporoparietal regions corresponding to bone fractures with laceration at the left temporal lobe. The CT scan of the helmet revealed the detachment of the energy-absorbing liner. Moreover an impact speed of 93 Km/h resulted from the analysis of accident dynamics. We analysed the literature regarding the effectiveness of full-face helmets in reducing the risk of fatality …
Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel
1799
Ms. 930a, Nr. 8, Bl. 22r-23v Böttiger, Karl August. Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel, Weimar, d[en] 13.
Evidence for developmental precursor lesions in epilepsy-associated glioneuronal tumors
1999
The etiology and pathogenesis of epilepsy-associated local lesions remain largely unknown. Histopathologically, the most frequent lesions comprise gangliogliomas and glioneuronal malformations, i.e., hamartias or hamartomas, with a preferred location in the temporal lobe of young patients. A characteristic histopathological admixture of glial and neuronal elements, the focal appearance and the benign clinical behaviour suggest a malformative nature. So far, no molecular genetic alterations specifically involved in the pathogenesis of these glioneuronal lesions have been identified. However, immunohistochemical analysis revealed distinct distribution patterns of oncofetal antigens. The embry…
In vivo optical coherence tomography imaging in a case of mucous membrane pemphigoid and a negative Nikolsky's sign.
2017
There is currently a growing interest in new diagnostic tools of the oral cavity and mucosa which are non-invasive, repeatable and reliable. A diagnosis of a suspected, autoimmune pathology was made regarding a 57-year-old patient with desquamative gingivitis. However, a negative Nikolsky's sign did not seem to indicate a diagnosis of mucous membrane pemphigoid neither was there any indication as to the optimum location for an incisional biopsy. As an imaging method, the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has enabled the obtaining of tomographic (cross-sectional) scans of tissue. Such images are acquired prior to and after verifying Nikolsky's sign, thereby enabling the clinician to …
Mapping cyclic stretch in the postpneumonectomy murine lung
2013
In many mammalian species, the removal of one lung [pneumonectomy (PNX)] is associated with the compensatory growth of the remaining lung. To investigate the hypothesis that parenchymal deformation may trigger lung regeneration, we used respiratory-gated micro-computed tomography scanning to create three-dimensional finite-element geometric models of the murine cardiac lobe with cyclic breathing. Models were constructed of respiratory-gated micro-computed tomography scans pre-PNX and 24 h post-PNX. The computational models demonstrated that the maximum stretch ratio map was patchy and heterogeneous, particularly in subpleural, juxta-diaphragmatic, and cephalad regions of the lobe. In these…
Slowly progressive aphasia: a four-year follow-up study
2001
This paper reports the long-term follow-up of GC, a patient with primary progressive aphasia of the fluent type. GC presented at onset with an anomia characterized by sparing of first letter knowledge, that applied mainly to proper names and living categories. No semantic deficits were observed in the first stage of the disease, and MRI showed a left temporal lobe atrophy with a gradient from the pole to the posterior regions, the latter being less involved. We now report the clinical evolution of GC from the 2nd to the 4th year of disease. As the disease progressed, the anomia became more severe and the phenomenon of first letter sparing was no longer detectable. Also semantic knowledge wa…
