Predictors of suicidal ideation in depressive primary care patients.
2009
Suicidal ideation is common in patients suffering from depression, but it often remains undetected. General practitioners play an important role in the management of depression and suicidality. The aim of this study was to identify predictors for suicidal ideation in patients with major depression in primary health care.We conducted a cross-sectional study. Patients were recruited from 74 primary care practices in Germany. Data was collected between April 2005 and July 2006. We calculated a binary logistic regression model to evaluate whether depression severity (Patient Health Questionnaire, PHQ-9), physical pain (SF-36 Physical Pain Scale), physical comorbidity, intake of antidepressant m…
Oesophageal motility disorders in type 1 diabetes mellitus and their relation to cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy.
2006
The relationship between cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CVAN) and oesophageal dysfunction in diabetes mellitus has not been well established because reports are contradictory. The aim of this study was to assess oesophageal function and its correlation with CVAN in type 1 diabetic patients without oesophageal symptoms. Forty-six type 1 diabetic patients without oesophageal symptoms (DG) and 34 healthy volunteers (CG) were studied. Both groups underwent CVAN tests and oesophageal manometry and pH-metry. Differences between groups regarding results of cardiovascular autonomic tests and oesophageal studies were statistically analysed. Compared with the CG, the DG group showed insufficien…
Association of metabolic syndrome and its components with hyperuricemia in a Mediterranean population.
2015
Several studies have found an association between hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome (MS), although there are discrepancies as to which MS components play a pivotal role in this association. We aimed to investigate the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and MS in a Mediterranean population (eastern Spain). We performed a case-control study of 71 patients with MS and 122 healthy controls. MS was defined according to the revised National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III modified criteria. Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA levels >6.55 mg/dL. We determined biochemical, lipidic and inflammatory parameters along with uric acid. Patients with MS showed a high…
Association between xerostomia, oral and general health, and obesity in adults. A cross-sectional pilot study.
2021
Background The objective of this study was to analyse the association between oral and general health variables and obesity indicators with the sensation of dry mouth or xerostomia as evaluated on the Xerostomia Inventory (XI). Material and Methods A total of 354 randomly selected subjects participated in this cross-sectional pilot study and completed an anonymous questionnaire. Anthropometric, clinical, and xerostomic variables were evaluated. Kruskal-Wallis, ANOVA and Bonferroni test were used for multiple comparisons. ROC curves and multinomial logistic regression were used to determine the (OR) risk of xerostomia. Results A total of 30.7 % of respondents reported xerostomia based on XI.…
Socio-economic and other correlates of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus seroprevalence among older adults in Sicily.
2009
The virus that causes Kaposi sarcoma, KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV, also known as human herpesvirus 8) has an unusual distribution and poorly characterized modes of transmission. To clarify these issues, socio-demographic correlates of KSHV seroprevalence were examined in a population-based study. In 1,154 randomly sampled adults (aged 32- 92, mean 71 years) throughout Sicily, KSHV antibodies were detected with four assays and a conservative algorithm. Seroprevalence was re-weighted to the population. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (OR, CI) from multivariate logistic regression were used to estimate associations of seroprevalence with interview data. KSHV seroprevalence was 8.…
Syncope in the German Nationwide inpatient sample – Syncope in atrial fibrillation/flutter is related to pulmonary embolism and is accompanied by hig…
2019
Syncope is a common phenomenon in the general population. Although most of the causes are of benign origin, some comorbidities are accompanied by high mortality. We aimed to compare the in-hospital mortality of patients with syncope related to different comorbities and investigate the impact of syncope in patients with atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF).The nationwide inpatient sample of Germany of the years 2011-2014 was used for this analysis. Patients with syncope (ICD-code R55) were stratified by presence of selected comorbidities. Additionally, AF patients with and without syncope were compared. Incidence of syncope and in-hospital mortality were calculated. Syncope as a predictor of adv…
Prevalence and risk factors of retinal vein occlusion: the Gutenberg Health Study.
2015
SummaryObjective To determine the age- and sex-specific prevalence and determinants of retinal vein occlusions (RVOs) in a large population-based German cohort. Methods The investigation included 15 010 participants (aged 35–74 years) from the Gutenberg Health Study. We determined the prevalence of RVO (central retinal vein occlusion [CRVO] and branch retinal vein occlusion [BRVO]) for the local population by assessing fundus photographs of 12 954 (86.3%; 49.8% women and 50.2% men) participants. Further, we analyzed the associations of RVO with cardiovascular, anthropometric, and ophthalmic parameters. Results The weighted prevalences of RVO, CRVO, and BRVO were 0.40%, 0.08%, and 0.32%, res…
Report of results obtained in 2,934 women using donor sperm: donor insemination versus in vitro fertilization according to indication.
2011
Objective To demonstrate that the use of donor sperm leads to varying outcome rates and that its use has evolved. Design Retrospective observational cohort study. Setting University-affiliated private IVF setting. Patient(s) Women (2,934) undergoing donor insemination (DI) or IVF with donor sperm (IVF-D). Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measurement(s) We evaluated the distribution of the clinical indications for the use of donated sperm, studying the reproductive outcome. Result(s) A total of 1,663 DI (57%) and 1,271 IVF-D (43%) were performed. There were significant differences in the indications for the use of donated sperm (DI vs. IVF-D). Regarding pregnancy rates (PR), cases of nonob…
Response and remission of subjective well-being in patients suffering from schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
2009
AbstractBackgroundPurpose of this study was to assess subjective well-being in schizophrenia inpatients and to find variables predictive for response and remission of subjective well-being.MethodThe subjective well-being under neuroleptic treatment scale (SWN-K) was used in 232 schizophrenia patients within a naturalistic multicenter trial. Early response was defined as a SWN-K total score improvement of 20% and by at least 10 points within the first 2 treatment weeks, response as an improvement in SWN-K total score of at least 20% and by at least 10 points from admission to discharge and remission in subjective well-being as a total score of more or equal to 80 points at discharge. Logisti…
Attitude towards adherence in patients with schizophrenia at discharge
2009
Abstract Background Purpose of the present study was to assess the attitude towards adherence at discharge and to verify its predictability using anamnestic and sociodemographic variables, factors influencing clinical treatment as well as the medical treatment applied. Methods Attitude towards adherence was evaluated in 369 inpatients with schizophrenic spectrum disorders within a naturalistic multicenter trial using the Compliance Rating Scale (CRS) by Kemp. Biweekly ratings of the PANSS, UKU and the Subjective Well-being under Neuroleptic Treatment Scale (SWN-K) were applied. Logistic regression and CART analyses were used to determine significant predictor variables for the attitude towa…
