Communication of Loneliness Emotions in the Online Vlogs and Their Moral Value

2019

Using the method of visual narrative analysis and the grounded theory, the answers are searched for the questions—what are the most typical emotional experiences that go with the representation of loneliness in the public digital communication and how the modern communication technologies are enabling these representations? The analysis allows to understand what has been the most desired for the young people and what is wished but not acquired (or lost) subject or experience which resulted in the loneliness. Finally, the attention is paid to the loneliness performance’s possible role in creating a digital culture and making moral sense to existential and difficult subjective experience whic…

Komunikācijas kvalitātes sakarības ar vientulības rādītājiem

2019

Loneliness Mediates the Relationship Between Early Life Stress and Perceived Stress but not Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal Axis Functioning

2021

Many authors have proposed that early life stress (ELS) provokes a dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and contributes negatively to the management of stress in adulthood. However, these associations have not always been observed, making it necessary to include new factors that could explain the different results found. In this regard, people with ELS experiences report less social support during adulthood, suggesting that loneliness could be a mediating factor. Thus, our aims were to investigate whether ELS was related to both perceived stress and diurnal HPA axis activity, and whether loneliness mediates these relationships, in a community sample (N=187, 18–55ye…

2019

The French province in the late 19th century was not a place for a woman who wanted more than just become an exemplary wife and mother. Emma Bovary, the literary character presented in this article tried to regain the right to choose the kind of life she wanted. Unfortunately, all her steps were closely observed by the community who put bourgeois morality first. Completely misunderstood by her loved ones, stuck in her unsatisfactory marriage, forced to represent bourgeois lifestyle, she suffered from severe loneliness which could also be associated with personality disorders and unconscious grief. Emma is not satisfied with being an object and she is trying to gain some power over her desti…

Loneliness and its relation to mental health in the general population: Validation and norm values of a brief measure

2021

Abstract Background Loneliness has been increasingly recognized as an important determinant of mental health. The purposes of this study were to (1) determine the degree of loneliness of women and men across different age groups, (2) explore its association with distress, (3) psychometrically evaluate the Three-Item Loneliness Scale, (4) provide norm values. Methods The Three-Item Loneliness Scale was applied in a representative survey of the German population (N=2527; 14–95 years). Standardized scales were used measuring distress (depression and anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, fatigue, life satisfaction). Factor structure and measurement invariance acro…

2019

The increase in the average age of the population in Western societies is a reality that defines new parameters of coexistence as well as new social demands. In the case of the elderly, the services guarantee not only the care, in particular to the dependents, but also the company (loneliness). This article analyses the location and accessibility to these services, specifically day centres, municipal centres of activity and residences, in the city of Valencia, which is also of great interest for planning and public management. Emphasis is placed on the context of the most vulnerable neighbourhoods. The results indicate that there are clear differences according to the place of residence of …

Eine Kurzversion des Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-25-F) zum Einsatz bei Gefangenen im Langzeitstrafvollzug in Europa

2014

Towards Ethical Guidelines of Using Telepresence Robots in Residential Care

2021

AbstractRobotic telepresence is a potential technology to help alleviating the loneliness of elderly people. The impacts of long-term use of telepresence robots in residential care are not well known. We were interested in how using a telepresence robot influences the resident, family members and care workers at a facility, and what challenges and solutions there are for wider adoption of such robots in residential care. With a telepresence robot Double, we arranged a series of three trials in two separate residential care facilities: one 12-week trial in a private facility and two successive 6-week trials in a public facility. In each trial, we installed the telepresence robot in a room of…
