Stochastic multiscale model for carbonate rocks.

2007

A multiscale model for the diagenesis of carbonate rocks is proposed. It captures important pore scale characteristics of carbonate rocks: wide range of length scales in the pore diameters; large variability in the permeability; and strong dependence of the geometrical and transport parameters on the resolution. A pore scale microstructure of an oolithic dolostone with generic diagenetic features is successfully generated. The continuum representation of a reconstructed cubic sample of sidelength $2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mm}$ contains roughly $42\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ crystallites and pore diameters varying over many decades. Petrophysical parameters are com…

Microseparation techniques for the study of the enantioselectivity of drug-plasma protein binding.

2009

Stereoselectivity in protein binding can have a significant effect on the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of chiral drugs. The investigation of enantioselectivity of drugs in their binding with human plasma proteins and the identification of the molecular mechanisms involved in the stereodiscrimination by the proteins represent a great challenge for clinical pharmacology. In this review, the separation techniques used for enantioselective protein binding experiments are described and compared. An overview of studies on enantiomer–protein interactions, enantiomer–enantiomer interactions as well as chiral drug–drug interactions, including allosteric effects, is presented. The c…

A lacustrine record of the early stage of the Miocene Climatic Optimum in Central Europe from the Most Basin, Ohře (Eger) Graben, Czech Republic.

2014

AbstractThis study reports on a ~ 150 m thick macrofossil-barren sequence of siliciclastic sediments from a Burdigalian age (Early Miocene) freshwater lake. The lake was located within an incipient rift system of the Most Basin in the Ohře (Eger) Graben, which was part of the European Cenozoic Rift System, and had an original area of ≈ 1000 km2. Sediments from the HK591 core that cover the entire thickness of the lake deposits and some of the adjacent stratigraphic units were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (a proxy for element composition) and magnetic polarity measurement. The element proxies were subjected to frequency analysis, which provided estimated sedimentation rates, a…

Dalle Cronache del mal d’amore al ciclo dell’Amica geniale: continuità ed evoluzione nella narrativa di Elena Ferrante

2019

The paper analyzes the whole narrative production of Elena Ferrante, emphasizing its unity and cohesion. Cohesion coexists with discontinuity: the publication of My Brilliant Friend marks an inventive turning point and reveals new strategies. But it’s even remarkable Ferrante’s predilection for a narrative in which «the flow of storytelling that despite its density manages to sweep you away».

Evidence that 3 alpha-hydroxy-5 alpha-pregnan-20-one is a physiologically relevant modulator of GABA-ergic neurotransmission.

1991

Abstract 3α-Hydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one (HPO) is a progesterone metabolite which exhibits narcotic properties at high concentrations by interactions with the receptor for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The present investigation characterized low-dose effects of HPO on GABA A receptor binding, by determining the allosteric properties of HPO on the in vitro binding of 3 H-muscimol to membrane fractions from the cerebella of ovariectomized rats. A newly developed method for tissue preparation was used to wash out endogenous ligands interfering with the assay. HPO reduced the affinity of 3 H-muscimol to GABA A receptor sites by 52% and enhanced the number of accessible binding sites from 5.5±0.5…

Characterization of the cleavage site and function of resulting cleavage fragments after limited proteolysis of Clostridium difficile toxin B (TcdB) …

2005

Clostridium difficiletoxin B (TcdB) is a single-stranded protein consisting of a C-terminal domain responsible for binding to the host cell membrane, a middle part involved in internalization, and the N-terminal catalytic (toxic) part. This study shows that TcdB is processed by a single proteolytic step which cleaves TcdB10463between Leu543and Gly544and the naturally occurring variant TcdB8864between Leu544and Gly545. The cleavage occurs at neutral pH and is catalysed by a pepstatin-sensitive protease localized in the cytoplasm and on the cytoplasmic face of intracellular membranes. The smaller N-terminal cleavage products [63 121 Da (TcdB10463) and 62 761 Da (TcdB8864)] harbour the cytotox…

STEAM Practices to Explore Ancient Architectures Using Augmented Reality and 3D Printing with GeoGebra

2021

Abstract In this study, we develop mathematical educational practices for students to explore ancient buildings using GeoGebra, Augmented Reality and 3D printing. It is an interdisciplinary approach, intertwining history, culture, mathematics, and engineering. For example, the 3D modelling of Cheomseongdae in Korea and the Temple of Dendera in Egypt can enable students to practice a multimodal set of traditional and innovative learning approaches. Students might use their mathematical knowledge to reflect on architectural and cultural history in a modeling task.
