Neuronal intestinal dysplasia
1987
Findings in 23 children with neuronal intestinal dysplasia (NID) are presented. Twelve children had Hirschsprung's disease that masked the existence of proximal NID. In all cases the diagnosis was established by histological-histochemical examination. Amelioration of symptoms by conservative treatment alone was achieved in 4 children; in 13 cases colostomy was necessary. In 6 patients colon resection was performed: 2 suffered from both colitis and obstruction; the other 4 were treated for obstruction, multiple perforations, persistant adynamia of the left colon, and fistulation. In 9 patients the colostomy was closed. Four of 6 children who did not have sonographic confirmation of motility …
À la recherche du Paradis Perdu. L’exil dans "Étoile errante" de J.M.G. Le Clézio
2017
J. M. G. Le Clézio, the author of the novel Wandering Star fitting into the sociopolitical context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, presents the story of two girls Esther and Nejma. Their life reflect the history of two nations: the Jews and the Palestinians. Sentenced to be exiled as a consequence of the war, they embark on a spiritual journey in time and space, in order to return to Paradise Lost. By becoming the witness of the enemy’s ruthlessness, unimaginable cruelty, they discover the importance of religion. It’s the way that they figure out who they are. The religion gives them a sense of security, hope and perseverance, by which, in the end, they return to the Promised Land. So …

Human neonates prefer colostrum to mature milk: Evidence for an olfactory bias toward the "initial milk"?
2021
International audience; OBJECTIVES: Colostrum is the initial milk secretion which ingestion by neonates warrants their adaptive start in life. Colostrum is accordingly expected to be attractive to newborns. The present study aims to assess whether colostrum is olfactorily attractive for 2-day-old newborns when presented against mature milk or a control. METHODS: The head-orientation of waking newborns was videotaped in three experiments pairing the odors of: (a) colostrum (sampled on postpartum day 2, not from own mother) and mature milk (sampled on average on postpartum day 32, not from own mother) (n tested newborns = 15); (b) Colostrum and control (water; n = 9); and (c) Mature milk and …
Effects of Nonschistosome Larval Trematodes on Biomphalaria Snails
2010
This chapter examines the most salient literature on the development of nonschistosome larval digeneans in Biomphalaria spp. (members of the superfamilies Clinostomoidea, Diplostomoidea, Echinostomatoidea, Paramphistomoidea, and Pronocephaloidea). For this purpose, the general biology of the nonschistosome trematode species that use Biomphalaria spp. as intermediate hosts are analyzed. Thereafter, the main features of these parasitic infections are studied with particular emphasis on topics such as the effect of the infections on the snail, the antagonism and/or competition between different digenean species in the snail, the immunology of the infection, and the genomic and proteomic a…

The Association between Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Gut Microbiota Composition in Premenopausal Women
2017
Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and gut microbiota composition in premenopausal women. The participants consisted of 71 premenopausal Finnish women (aged 19–49 years). Gut microbiota were analyzed using flow cytometry, 16S rRNA gene hybridization and DNA-staining. Maximum oxygen uptake (VO₂ₘₐₓ) was assessed by respiratory gas analyzer and body composition by Bioimpdance. We found that participants with low VO₂ₘₐₓ had lower Bacteroides, but higher Eubacterium rectale-Clostridium coccoides than the high VO₂ₘₐₓ group (p < 0.05 for all). VO₂ₘₐₓ was inversely associated with EreC (r = −0.309, p = 0.01) but not with other bact…
Rho protein inhibition blocks protein kinase C translocation and activation.
1998
Small GTP-binding proteins of the Ras and Rho family participate in various important signalling pathways. Large clostridial cytotoxins inactivate GTPases by UDP-glucosylation. Using Clostridium difficile toxin B-10463 (TcdB) for inactivation of Rho proteins (RhoA/Rac/Cdc42) and Clostridium sordellii lethal toxin-1522 (TcsL) for inactivation of Ras-proteins (Ras/Rac/Ral, Rap) the role of these GTPases in protein kinase C (PKC) stimulation was studied. Phorbol-myristate-acetate (PMA) induced a rapid PKC translocation to and activation in the particulate cell fraction as determined by PKC-activity measurements and Western blots for PKC alpha. These effects were blocked by TcdB inhibiting Rho …
The global, regional, and national burden of cirrhosis by cause in 195 countries and territories, 1990-2017 : a systematic analysis for the Global Bu…
2020
Background\ud \ud Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases (collectively referred to as cirrhosis in this paper) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, although the burden and underlying causes differ across locations and demographic groups. We report on results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 on the burden of cirrhosis and its trends since 1990, by cause, sex, and age, for 195 countries and territories.\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud We used data from vital registrations, vital registration samples, and verbal autopsies to estimate mortality. We modelled prevalence of total, compensated, and decompensated cirrhosis on the bas…
Coprology of Panthera tigris altaica and Felis bengalensis euptilurus from the Russian Far East
2007
Fecal samples from the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) and the Amur cat (Felis bengalensis euptilurus) from Far Eastern Russia, were examined for parasites. A natural sedimentation methodology was used and a complete examination of all the sediment was performed. This fecal investigation allowed us to isolate and identify several developmental stages of gastrointestinal, hepatic, and respiratory parasites. Five parasites were found from P. t. altaica: 11 trematodes (Platynosomum fastosum) and 4 nematodes (Strongyloides sp., Ancylostomatidae, Toxascaris leonina, and Toxocara cati). Five parasites were found from F. b. euptilurus: 1 cestode (Diplopylidium sp.) and 4 nematodes (Trichu…
