Unaccusativity

2012

My research is an attempt at suggesting a cross-linguistically valid definition of verbs characterizedby unagentivity and affectedness such as “burn”, “die”, “sink”, “fall”, “slide”, etc., which accordingto the present analysis constitute the semantic core of unaccusativity. Both synchronic anddiachronic approaches are followed. Various definitions have been attributed to these verbs(eventives, anticausatives, transformatives, inchoatives, decausatives). Although Perlmutter &Postal (1984) classify unaccusative verbs on the basis of their syntactic behavior, they also arguethat the syntactic expression of arguments is always determinable on the basis of the meaning of theverb, so that so…

2010

Voce inserita nell'Enciclopedia dell'italiano Treccani (EncIt); il meccanismo dell'assimilazione è indagato da una prospettiva sia sincronica, relativa ai nessi assimilati dell'italiano contemporaneo, sia diacronica e ricerca la motivazioni del processo e i suoi fondamenti fonetici e fonologici.

Auxiliaries

2014

The prototypical auxiliary in Ancient Greek is eimí “to be”, which is involved in some participial periphrases conveying aspectual value and variously interacting with the synthetic forms within the inflectional paradigm. However, many other verbs are involved in the Greek periphrastic constructions, although their status as auxiliaries is still a matter of debate. Resent research in grammaticalization allows to describe the entire range of such verbs in prototypical terms, that is, as a coherent category which includes more central and peripheral, i.e. less grammaticalized members.

A Conceptual Restructuring of Spatial Motion Expressions in Chinese L2

2018

This paper focuses on the patterns in the encoding of spatial motion events that play a major role in the acquisition of these type of expressions. The goal is to single out the semantic contribution of the linguistic items which surface in Chinese locative constructions. In this way, we intend to provide learners with an account of the spatial representation encoded in the Chinese language. In fact, Chinese grammar is often perceived as idiosyncratic, thus generating a frustration that turns into learned helplessness (Maier and Seligman, 1976). We will analyze Talmy (2000a,b) framework under the light of investigations such as Landau and Jackendoff (1993), Svenonius (2004, 2006, 2007), and…

Invalid Syntax: NooJ Assisted Automatic Detection of Errors in Auxiliaries and Past Participles in Italian

2017

The work targets two areas of Italian morphosyntax: auxiliary selection (AS) and past participle agreement (PPA). In selecting such inflectional morphemes, learners of Italian commit frequent errors, even after a long period of constant study. We aim to enclose AS and PPA within the boundaries of NLP in order that a tool can be developed with a twofold purpose: first, it helps experts to build specific computer drills regarding AS and PPA; second, it assists self-taught learners in verifying whether their periphrastic sentences in Italian are well-turned. This area of Computer-Assisted Language Learning is currently poorly investigated. Further research might substantiate the importance of …
