Seismic prevention and rehabilitation of nonstructural elements. Application experiences of nonstructural pre-seismic evaluation
2012
Topics concerning nonstructural seismic prevention and rehabilitation take their place in the main context of buildings safety in order to explore some aspects of performance of those technical elements. They have become very topical in Italy in the last decade since the repetition of seismic events has made vulnerability and its implications obvious not only in terms of safety risk. This paper reports briefly about author research experiences in this topic and more detail an experience as a component of research team, organizer and tutor in the activities of an international cooperation project between University of Palermo and University of California-Berkeley. After a short introduction …
Impact of Stock Price Jumps on Option Values
1999
Many empirical papers document the fact that the distribution of stock returns exhibits fatter tails than would be expected from a normal distribution. This might explain some of the pricing biases of the Black/Scholes model, which is] based on a normal return distribution. Given this result, alternative option pricing models should be based on one of the following three classes of return models: (1) a stationary process, such as a paretian stable or a student’s t-distribution, (2) a mixture of stationary distributions, such as two normal distributions with different means or variances, or a mixture of a diflusion and a pure jump process, or (3) a distribution such as a normal distribution …
Norme d'internalité et évaluation dans la perception sociale
1998
We left the report that the theorists of the standard of internalité (Beauvois and Dubois, on 1988; Dubois, on 1994) evoked, about the value of the internal explanations, a value anchored in the social functioning and the efficiency of which is, for the main part, demonstrated only in very normative situations. We wanted, for our part, to show that the allocation(attribution) of internalité exceeded the frame(executive), imported but very confined, of these situations of strong normativité and that she could operate sometimes according to more emotional criteria or attitudinels.
Nurse-based monitoring and management of breakthrough pain in an acute pain relief and palliative care unit
2016
To assess the nurses' performance in assessing, treating, and documenting breakthrough pain (BTP) in a palliative care unit where traditionally there is continuous training. The study was performed in an acute palliative care unit. Once a week, a research nurse examined the documentation regarding all the episodes of BTP registered in a specific pain chart, designed by the institutional nurse board, as part of the routine nurse activity. The charts of 50 consecutive eligible patients (32 M/18 F), were analysed. The mean number of episodes/patient was 3.3 (SD 1.61; range 1-7). 166 episodes occurred. The main BTP pain intensity was 7.06 (SD 0.82). In 7 episodes, pain intensity was not evaluated…
A quantitative analysis of Educational Data through the Comparison between Hierarchical and Not-Hierarchical Clustering
2017
Many research papers have studied the problem of taking a set of data and separating it into subgroups through the methods of Cluster Analysis. However, the variables and parameters involved in Cluster Analysis have not always been outlined and criticized, especially in the field of Science Education. Moreover, in the field of Science Education, a comparison between two different Clustering methods is not discussed in the literature. Conceptions of students about modeling in physic are investigated by using an open-ended questionnaire. The questionnaire is analyzed through Clustering methods. The clustering results obtained by using the two methods are compared and show a good coherence bet…
An evaluation of the antireflux properties of sodium alginate by means of combined multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH-metry.
2005
Summary Background : Alginate-based preparations act as mechanical antireflux barrier, which can reduce both acid and non-acid reflux events and limit the proximal migration of oesophageal refluxate. Aim : To evaluate all the above features with a novel technique, multichannel electrical impedance and pH-metry. Methods : Ten reflux patients underwent stationary impedancemetry and pH-metry after eating a refluxogenic meal. They were studied 1 h in basal conditions and 1 h after taking 10 mL of Gaviscon Advance. In both sessions, measurements were obtained in right lateral and supine decubitus. Results : Alginate preparation was able to decrease significantly (P < 0.05) the number of acid ref…
An iterative method for pricing American options under jump-diffusion models
2011
We propose an iterative method for pricing American options under jump-diffusion models. A finite difference discretization is performed on the partial integro-differential equation, and the American option pricing problem is formulated as a linear complementarity problem (LCP). Jump-diffusion models include an integral term, which causes the resulting system to be dense. We propose an iteration to solve the LCPs efficiently and prove its convergence. Numerical examples with Kou@?s and Merton@?s jump-diffusion models show that the resulting iteration converges rapidly.

EMG assessment of chewing behaviour for food evaluation: Influence of personality characteristics
2007
Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the chewing behaviour stability over time and the influence of personality characteristics on chewing behaviour in order to assess the use of EMG for food assessment. From a set of eighty three subjects, thirty-two subjects were classified as personality type A or B (Jenkins Activity Survey questionnaire) and then recruited for the experimentation. Two types of assays were performed: Assay I: chewing gum for 10 chews and Assay II: chewing gum for 50 s. Only in two cases (6.3%) did the subject change his/her chewing behaviour; in the other cases, subjects’ chewing behaviour was stable over time (two months test). In both assays significan…
