2019

It is now accepted that the immune system plays a critical role in cancers evolution (Hanahan et al., 2011). In this context, current understanding of the adaptive immune response made it a prime target. T CD4 cells, the main players of the adaptive immune system component, are known to possess distinct roles in the control of tumour growth. Thereby, Th2 and Tfh cells, both known to activate B cells in pathogenic infections, present antagonistic roles in cancer. Indeed, numerous studies demonstrate that Th2 cells are correlated with disease progression (especially via IL-4 secretion) (Koller et al., 2010 ; Roca et al., 2012), whereas Tfh cells are associated with a good prognosis for the pa…

Canopy Architecture Appraisal by Fractal Dimension of 'Flordastar' Peach Trees Grafted onto Different Rootstocks

2007

The objective of this research was to evaluate the modification of canopy architecture of ''Flordastar'' peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) grafted onto rootstocks with different vigour, by the use of fractal dimension (D). The hypothesis was that different vigour rootstocks are able to modify the complexity of the branching pattern and that this effect can be assessed by a geometric parameter such as the fractal dimension (D) of the 2D projection of tree branching structure. The observations were carried out in a four-year-old experimental orchard of cv. ''Flordastar'' peach trees grafted onto Ishtara, Barrier, GF677 and MrS 2/5 rootstocks. On digital pictures of leafless, dormant peach tree…

The observations were carried out in a four-year-old experimental orchard of cv. ''Flordastar'' peach trees grafted onto Ishtara Barrier GF677 and MrS 2/5 rootstocks. On digital pictures of leafless dormant peach trees the tree skeleton was manually depicted by an image analysis software to measure total length and angles of insertion of branches. Bitmaps of the skeleton were then subjected to a specific software (FDCALC) able to calculate D by the "box counting" method. To account for the error introduced by analyzing a three dimensional structure with its 2D projection measurements were done on two images per tree taken from two different viewing angles. Results are shown in relation to tree vigour of the scion/stock combination. Fractal dimension was related to the vigour ranking of the graft combinations tested. In particular vigorous scion/stock combinations showed the highest D.HorticultureCanopy architectureHorticultureRootstockFractal dimensionMathematics

The pandemic crisis has accelerated the diffusion of learning environments characterized by the intensive use of technology. This novelty represents a transversal objective of the professionalization of the university teacher with a particular declination on the pedagogical-didactic-evaluation side as a strategic issue for the development of higher education. This paper presents the results of research conducted with 119 newly recruited university teachers and 20 Department Directors. The aim of the research was on the one hand to detect the perception of newly hired teachers related to their teaching metacognitive and evaluative skills with reference to distance learning to highlight specific characteristics that could have encouraged or hindered adaptation to this new condition. On the other hand through the qualitative research the aim has been to penetrate in depth the challenges posed by the digital revolution at University by carrying out 20 interviews with privileged witnesses who represent on the national scene agents of institutional change. The results showed a certain awareness of the need to integrate new ways of teaching to increase interest participation and enthusiasm for technology.Settore M-PED/03 - Didattica E Pedagogia Speciale

The recent digitisation of a painting by an anonymous Sicilian in the collections of the Museo de Historia in Madrid and its inclusion in the Spanish and European cultural heritage databases has made it possible to bring an important pictorial representation of Antonello Gagini’s tribune in Palermo Cathedral back to the attention of the scientific community. After reviewing the main documentary and iconographic sources relating to the tribune the work now in Madrid is presented here which provides a valuable comparison to the sources known so far.

The study aims to reflect on the training of future primary school teachers by starting from the use of the e-portfolio as an innovative tool to promote the acquisition of reflective and self-evaluation competence within the flipped classroom. The research involved 154 students of Primary Education Master’s Degree Course of the University of Palermo attending to the Docimology course during the academic year 2020/2021. This paper presents the theoretical assumptions objectives and operating methods of a path that made the use of the e-portfolio in flipped classroom to promote the development of docimological skills in higher education. It was hypothesized that the training intervention designed according to the principles of the flippmethodology and through the use of the e-portfolio would have contributed to the development of students’ self-evaluation skills during the 30 hours of the Docimology course.Settore M-PED/04 - Pedagogia Sperimentale

Participation Costs and Inefficiency in Takeover Contests

2010

We consider a takeover in which risk neutral bidders incur private costs to participate to the auction. Supposing that valuations for target firm are common knowledge, we study the optimal strategy of bidders and analyze the takeover result when they get or not toeholds in the target firm. We found that bidder's decision of participation is endogenous. By analyzing bidder's condition of participation, we found that the probability that the potential bidder with the highest valuation will not participate to the control, exists. We show that this probability increases with the size of toeholds possessed by the bidder with low valuation. Nevertheless, the size of toeholds possessed by the bidd…

Multiple Motivations Consequences on Bidder's Optimal Strategy in Takeover Contests

2011

This paper examines the optimal bidding strategy in takeover contests for a target firm, and the positive correlation between the bidders’ valuation. We consider risk neutral bidders who compete for the control of a target firm in which they get initial shareholdings. The bidder valuation for target firm is correlated with his motivations which determine the bidder’s strategy. We study bidder’s optimal strategy in mixed motivations setting. Since motivations are numerous, hypothesis of affiliated value in auctions allows to study bidder’s strategy. The paper shows that the impact of affiliation degree on bidder’s optimal strategy depends on their private signal and on the ratio between thei…

Diagnosis of papillary muscle rupture after acute myocardial infarction by transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography.

1993

The sensitivity of transthoracic echocardiography to visualize the structural abnormality of papillary muscle rupture (PMR) after acute myocardial infarction can be anticipated to average about 50%; therefore, we evaluated five patients exhibiting the condition with both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. The use of the two imaging techniques resulted in the fact that no instance of PMR was missed. Using transthoracic echocardiography in two patients and transesophageal echocardiography in four, the ruptured papillary muscle was visualized directly. Mitral insufficiency as an indirect sign was observed in all patients. In one patient the papillary muscle rupture developed i…
