Diferenças na ativação muscular entre a realização de flexões com apoio fixo e com um sistema de suspensão unilateral em forma de V em diferentes alt…

2014

This study was designed to analyze upper extremity and core muscle activation performing push-ups under different stability conditions and body positions. Trained university male students (n= 29) performed 3 push-ups each under stable conditions and using suspension device (AirFit Trainer ProTM) with their hands at 2 different heights (i.e., 10 and 65 cm). Push-up speed was controlled using a metronome and the testing order was randomized. The average amplitudes of the electromyographic root mean square of the Triceps Brachii, Upper Trapezius, Anterior Deltoid, Clavicular Pectoralis, Rectus Abdominis, Rectus Femoris, Lumbar Erector Spinae and Gluteus Maximus were recorded and normalized to …

Muscle activation during push-ups performed under stable and unstable conditions

2015

Background/Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze muscle activation when performing push-ups under different stability conditions. Methods: Physically fit young male university students (N = 30) performed five push-ups under stable conditions (on the floor) and using four unstable devices (wobble board, stability disc, fitness dome, and the TRX Suspension Trainer). The push-up speed was controlled using a metronome, and the testing order was randomized. The average amplitudes of the electromyographic (EMG) root mean square of the anterior deltoid (DELT), serratus anterior (SERRA), lumbar multifidus (LUMB), and rectus femoris (FEM) were recorded. The electromyographic signals we…

Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System associated with Hemophilia A: A case report

2021

Abstract Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System (SSCNS) is a condition secondary to the deposition of hemosiderin within the subpial layers of central nervous system leading to its progressive degeneration, clinically responsible for hearing impairment, cerebellar ataxia and pyramidal syndrome. Here we report the case of a 61-year-old man with medical history of congenital hemophilia A presenting with typical clinical features of SSCNS associated with extensive hypo-intensity on fast 2D gradient-echo-weighted sequences, along the spinal cord, posterior fossa's structures and cerebral cortex. Interestingly, although his disorder was revealed by a lumbar spinal stenosis, presurgi…

Prognostic Role of CSF β-amyloid 1–42/1–40 Ratio in Patients Affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

2021

The involvement of β-amyloid (Aβ) in the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been widely discussed and its role in the disease is still a matter of debate. Aβ accumulates in the cortex and the anterior horn neurons of ALS patients and seems to affect their survival. To clarify the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Aβ 1–42 and Aβ 42/40 ratios as a potential prognostic biomarker for ALS, we performed a retrospective observational study on a cohort of ALS patients who underwent a lumbar puncture at the time of the diagnosis. CSF Aβ 1–40 and Aβ 1–42 ratios were detected by chemiluminescence immunoassay and their values were correlated with clinical features. We found a signi…

Das Chlorom (Granulozytäres Sarkom, Myeloblastom) - Klinik und radiologische Diagnostik -

2000

Six cases of granulocytic sarcoma are presented. A mediastinal chloroma and a tumor of the submandibular gland were observed with two patients as single sign of acute myeloic leukaemia. In one patient a chloroma appeared as first manifestation of acute myeloic leukaemia. Two patients exhibited the tumor as first symptom of a blastic crisis of chronic myelogenous leukaemia (femoral bone, lumbar spine). The sixth patient with a myelodyplastic syndrom showed a chloroma of the breast. Various radiological procedures were applied including plain radiography, MRT, CT and mammography. The results are compared with literature. Principles of therapy were supplemented.

Vitamin D status as a determinant of peak bone mass in young Finnish men.

2004

Severe vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, but scarce data are available about the extent to which vitamin D status determines the development of the peak bone mass in young adults. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency [serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) less than the lower limit of the reference range of 20–105 nmol/liter] and the relationship between vitamin D status and peak bone mass among young Finnish men. A cross-sectional study of determinants of peak bone mass with data on lifestyle factors collected retrospectively was performed in 220 young men, aged 18.3–20.6 yr. One hundred and seventy men were recruits of the Finnish Army, and 50 were men of similar …

Malformación de Arnold-Chiari y siringomielia en atención primaria. A propósito de un caso

2012

Rare diseases, due to their epidemiological characteristics, and sometimes to the non-specific symptoms, are difficult to diagnose routinely at Primary Care Level. A case is presented of Arnold Chiari malformation in a young male patient with early insidious presentation (neck pain and sub-occipital headaches) consulting due to the emergence of new symptoms (paresthesias, muscular weakness, cervicobrachial and radiating lumbar pain, and headaches after mild exertion).

Meningitis bei 154 Kindern einer Kinderklinik in Deutschland: Klinische und epidemiologische Aspekte

1992

In a retrospective study, the histories of the non-neonates treated for primary meningitis in the Pediatric Department of Mainz University Hospital between 1986 and 1989 were analyzed with regard to etiological, diagnostic, clinical and epidemiological criteria. In the period studied there were 37 cases of infectious meningitis (11 Neisseria meningitidis (29.7%), 7 H. influenzae (18.9%), 3 S. pneumoniae (8.1%), 16 other (43.2%)), and 117 cases of acute aseptic meningitis syndrome (12 mumps virus (10.3%), 3 Borrelia burgdorferi (7.7%), 3 FSME (2.6%), 2 herpes simplex virus, 91 other (77.8%)). Sixty-six percent of the patients were male. Of the infants with infectious meningitis, 68% were und…

Modic changes-Their associations with low back pain and activity limitation: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

2018

Background Previous systematic reviews have reported positive associations between Modic changes (MCs) and low back pain (LBP), but due to their narrow scope and new primary studies, there is a need for a comprehensive systematic review. Our objectives were to investigate if MCs are associated with non-specific LBP and/or activity limitation and if such associations are modified by other factors. Methods A protocol for this review was registered at PROSPERO prior to commencing the work (PROSPERO record: CRD42015017350). The MEDLINE, CINAHL and EMBASE databases were searched for relevant studies from first record to June 15th 2016. Prospective or retrospective cross-sectional cohort studies …

The Association Between Bone Mineral Density and Airflow Limitation in a Cohort of Fit Elderly Women

2016

Purpose: As studies examining the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and airflow limitation (AL) have produced conflicting results, the current one set out to analyze if and to what degree there are any correlations between these variables in a population of fit elderly women. Methods: One hundred and twenty-one non-smoking, fit and healthy women (age ≥ 65 years) underwent anthropometric assessment, laboratory testing (serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D, parathormone, and cytokine levels), pulmonary function testing (PFT), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to evaluate BMD values of the lumbar and femoral regions. Results: A significant positive association was found between FEV1/FVC …
