It constitutes an ideal location to study and forecast how the marine environment responds to rapid climatic change. Here we present a palaeoenvironmental study carried out on the sediments of ODP Site 963, recovered in the Sicily Channel, the sill which divides the western from the eastern Mediterranean basin. Coeliac disease, daily more frequently diagnosed in our population, involves many organs also in oligosymptomatic patients and with an adequate nutritional regime. Possible endocrine implications include failure to thrive, pubertal delay and reproduction diseases due to deregulation of GH, FSH and LH secretion. Leptin, an adipose tissue hormone, can be decreased as well and its deficiency could be related to growth and puberty anomalies. We studied 14 asymptomatic coeliac patients in peripubertal age (7.5–13.8 years) and tested their leptin levels in order to correlate them with endocrine and anthropometric data. [reaction: see text] Convergent, stereoselective syntheses of the pharmacologically active, naturally occurring lactones (-)-microcarpalide and (+)-lethaloxin have been achieved from the commercially available, chiral reagents (R)-glycidol, (S,S)-tartaric acid, and d-ribose as the starting materials. These syntheses have further served to establish the hitherto unknown absolute configuration of (+)-lethaloxin and to show its identity with (+)-pinolidoxin.

High-molecular-mass polysaccharides were released by mild acid degradation of the lipopolysaccharides of two wild-type Vibrio vulnificus strain, a flagellated motile strain CECT 5198 and a non-flagellated non-motile strain S3-I2-36. Terpioside B (2a), a unique glycolipid containing two fucose residues in the furanose form in its pentasaccharide chain, was isolated from the marine sponge Terpios sp. Its complete stereostructure was solved by interpretation of mass spectrometric and NMR data along with CD and GG-MS analyses of its degradation products. Terpioside B is a potent inhibitor against LPS-induced NO release, and is considerably more active than simpler glycosphingolipids such as terpioside A and monoglucosylceramide.
Thermal nucleation of cavities in liquid helium at negative pressures

We have investigated the nucleation rate at which cavities are formed in $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ at negative pressures due to thermal fluctuations. To this end, we have used a density functional that reproduces the He liquid-gas interface along the coexistence line. The inclusion of thermal effects in the calculation of the barrier against nucleation results in a sizable decrease of the absolute value of the tensile strength above 1.5 K.

Resum: L’article es basa en el convenciment que la comprensió usual de la ironia no pot ser aplicada a les obres de J. V. Foix, les quals més aviat han de ser enteses en el context de la ironia romàntica tal com va ser concebuda per Friedrich Schlegel i més tard documentada en la investigació d’Ingrid Strohschneider-Kohrs. Es descriu el terme «reflexió» com l’autonegació de l’absolut per a després analitzar alguns poemes en prosa del poeta, en què tal classe d’ironia pot ser identificada. En els escrits de Foix les freqüents metareflexions sobre poesia o pintura fan aparèixer els textos o els quadres com a il·legibles o dotats d’un gran poder subversiu.
