Con questo contributo si è voluto ricordare che nella turbolenta Francia nel 1793 per la prima volta i beni naturali vengono ufficialmente riconosciuti anche come beni culturali facenti parte del patrimonio di un popolo, che li deve custodire e tutelare. Il tutto era scaturito dalla necessità di salvare dalla distruzione due acquasantiere costituite da 2 valve di tridacna, una conchiglia esotica, presenti nella Chiesa di S. Sulpice a Parigi. Effect of High‐Caloric Nutrition on Survival in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

International audience; Objective: Weight loss has been identified as a negative prognostic factor in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but there is no evidence regarding whether a high-caloric diet increases survival. Aim: Developments within nanomedicine have revealed a great potential for drug delivery to the brain. In this study nanoparticulate systems as drug carriers for riluzole, with sufficiently high loading capacity and small particle size, were prepared to a reach therapeutic drug level in the brain. Materials & method: Solid lipid nanoparticles containing riluzole have great potential as drug-delivery systems for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and were produced by using the warm oil-in-water microemulsion technique. Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of acetyl-L-carnitine for ALS.

Our objective was to assess the effects of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) with riluzole on disability and mortality of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Definite/probable ALS patients, 40-70 years of age, duration 6-24 months, self-sufficient (i.e. able to swallow, cut food/handle utensils, and walk), and with forced vital capacity (FVC) > 80% entered a pilot double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial and were followed for 48 weeks. ALC or placebo 3 g/day was added to riluzole 100 mg/day. Primary endpoint: number of patients no longer self-sufficient. Effect of high-caloric nutrition on serum neurofilament light chain levels in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Recent publications showed that circulating neurofilaments (Nfs) may be used as a diagnostic biomarker distinguishing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) from ALS mimics with high sensitivity and specificity.1–3 Furthermore, it has been shown that patients with higher Nf levels show faster disease progression1 and shorter survival.2 3 Nf levels remain rather stable during the course of disease.2 Current literature suggests that the diagnostic value of neurofilament light chains (NfL) and phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chains in cerebrospinal fluid is about equal, whereas in blood NfL seems to be superior.4 In this study, we investigated the effect of a high-caloric fatty diet (HCFD) on …

L'abolizione delle Province in Sicilia: resoconto semiserio di un rivoluzione in progress

Mentre a livello nazionale era in corso il dibattito sul destino delle Province la Regione Sicilia ha inteso anticipare i tempi procedendo all'abolizione delle proprie Province e la loro sostituzione da parte dei Liberi Consorzi comunali e delle Città metropolitane. Tuttavia l'esatto dimensionamento funzionale dei due nuovi enti resta affidato alla futura legislazione così come incerte appaiono le modalità per la riorganizzazione dei servizi del personale e delle risorse. Il dubbio che tutto rimanga come prima e che la rivoluzione si concreti nella pratica nel mantenimento dell'esistente seppur rivisto sul piano della rappresentatività politica appare molto più che fondato.

Le frane attivate da precipitazione sono, tra tutti gli eventi di dissesto idrogeologico, quelle che probabilmente si verificano con più frequenza. Il verificarsi di tali frane, soprattutto per la velocità con cui inizia e si sviluppa il fenomeno, può comportare conseguenze, a volte anche gravi, per le persone e le cose. In un tale scenario è chiaro che risulta di fondamentale importanza munirsi di strumenti per la previsione del fenomeno nel tentativo di prevenirne e/o mitigarne il rischio che questo comporta.
