[EN] Two chitinases induced in tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv. Rutgers) by citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) infection were purified. Their molecular masses determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis were 32 kDa and 34 kDa and by filtration through Sephadex G-100 were 23 kDa and 25 kDa, respectively. These chitinases (P32 and P34) have been shown to be identical to the tomato pathogenesis-related proteins C7 and C6. Until now, more genes of the light-harvesting antenna of higher-plant photosystem I (PSI) than proteins have been described. To improve our understanding of the composition of light-harvesting complex I (LHCI) of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), we combined one- and two-dimensional (1-D and 2-D, respectively) gel electrophoresis with immunoblotting and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/ MS). Molecular diversity at the self-incompatibility locus is a salient feature in natural populations of wild tomato (Lycopersicon peruvianum)

A cDNA encoding a stylar protein was cloned from flowers of self-incompatible wild tomato (Lycopersicon peruvianum). The corresponding gene was mapped to the S locus, which is responsible for self-incompatibility. The nucleotide sequence was determined for this allele, and compared to other S-related sequences in the Solanaceae. The S allele was used to probe DNA from 92 plants comprising 10 natural populations of Lycopersicon peruvianum. Hybridization was conducted under moderate and permissive stringencies in order to detect homologous sequences. Genetic variation of an Italian long shelf-life tomato (Solanum lycopersicon L.) collection by using SSR and morphological fruit traits

The recovery of ancient germplasm in tomato (Solanum lycopersicon L.) has become necessary to limit the wide genetic erosion caused by the employment of modern cultivars. Among germplasm collections, long shelf-life landraces could represent an important source of biodiversity. The present study provides a first set of molecular and phenotypic data on long shelf-life (so called "da serbo" in southern Italy) tomato collection, mainly originated from Sicily together with some landraces from Campania and Apulia. Draft genome sequence of Pseudomonas corrugata, a phytopathogenic bacterium with potential industrial applications

Pseudomonas corrugata was first described as the causal agent of a tomato disease called 'pith necrosis' yet it is considered as a biological resource in various fields such as biocontrol of plant diseases and production of industrially promising microbial biopolymers (mcl-PHA). Identification of a copper chaperone from tomato fruits infected with Botrytis cinerea by differential display

Differential display was used to isolate tomato genes responding to fungal infection. Here we describe the isolation and characterization of a gene that is down-regulated in tomato fruits infected with the phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea. The cDNA identified encodes a protein that shares sequence similarity to the amino terminal region of CCH, a copper chaperone from Arabidopsis thaliana, that participates in intracellular copper homeostasis by delivering Cu to the secretory pathway. Summary The peroxidase/indoleacetic acid (IAA) oxidase system of plants of Gynura aurantiaca and Lycopersicon esculentum healthy and infected by citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) was studied. In these hosts, the infection induced an increase of both enzymic activities, when they were measured between 40 and 50 d post inoculation. Pseudomonas corrugata is a phytopathogenic bacterium, causal agent of tomato pith necrosis, yet it is an ubiquitous bacterium that is part of the microbial community in the soil and in the rhizosphere of different plant species. Although it is a very heterogeneous species, all the strains tested were able to produce short chain acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) quorum sensing signal molecules. The main AHL produced was N-hexanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (C6-AHL). An AHL quorum sensing system, designated PcoI/PcoR, was identified and characterized.
