[EN] Two chitinases induced in tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv. Rutgers) by citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) infection were purified. Their molecular masses determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis were 32 kDa and 34 kDa and by filtration through Sephadex G-100 were 23 kDa and 25 kDa, respectively. These chitinases (P32 and P34) have been shown to be identical to the tomato pathogenesis-related proteins C7 and C6. To improve our understanding of the composition of light-harvesting complex I (LHCI) of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), we combined one- and two-dimensional (1-D and 2-D, respectively) gel electrophoresis with immunoblotting and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/ MS). A cDNA encoding a stylar protein was cloned from flowers of self-incompatible wild tomato (Lycopersicon peruvianum). The corresponding gene was mapped to the S locus, which is responsible for self-incompatibility. The nucleotide sequence was determined for this allele, and compared to other S-related sequences in the Solanaceae. The S allele was used to probe DNA from 92 plants comprising 10 natural populations of Lycopersicon peruvianum. Among germplasm collections, long shelf-life landraces could represent an important source of biodiversity. Here we describe the isolation and characterization of a gene that is down-regulated in tomato fruits infected with the phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea. The gram-negative phytopathogen Pseudomonas corrugata has an acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) quorum-sensing (QS) system called PcoI/PcoR that is involved in virulence on tomato. This work identifies, downstream of pcol, a gene designated rfiA, which we demonstrate is directly linked to QS by cotranscription with pcol. Summary The peroxidase/indoleacetic acid (IAA) oxidase system of plants of Gynura aurantiaca and Lycopersicon esculentum healthy and infected by citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) was studied. In these hosts, the infection induced an increase of both enzymic activities, when they were measured between 40 and 50 d post inoculation. The analysis of isozyme composition by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and specific staining of peroxidase revealed an intensification of most of the zymogram bands as well as the premature appearance of one of the isozymes in the two plants investigated. Pseudomonas corrugata is a phytopathogenic bacterium, causal agent of tomato pith necrosis, yet it is an ubiquitous bacterium that is part of the microbial community in the soil and in the rhizosphere of different plant species. Although it is a very heterogeneous species, all the strains tested were able to produce short chain acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) quorum sensing signal molecules. The main AHL produced was N-hexanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (C6-AHL). An AHL quorum sensing system, designated PcoI/PcoR, was identified and characterized.
