Figure S7. Anti-proliferative effects of curcumin, imatinib and curcumin+imatinib combination on CML cell viability. Curcumin and imatinib were tested for their anti-proliferative effects on K562 (a) and LAMA84 cells (b). The assays were performed by using curcumin and imatinib singly (using the reported doses) or in combination (20 μM curcumin held constant and imatinib at reported concentrations. In K562 cells combination compound treatments showed significant differences compared to single imatinib treatments for all doses tested (p 1 indicates antagonism. (PPTX 50 kb)

Diagnostic challenges in a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the maxilla presenting as exposed necrotic bone
2022
Lymphoma is the second most common malignancy in the head and neck area, affecting both nodal and extranodal sites, including oral soft and hard tissues, usually in the form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). However, lymphomas of the jaws, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the most common type of NHL, are very rare and may cause significant diagnostic challenges resembling common jaw pathologies, such as periapical lesions, osteomyelitis and osteonecrosis. The aim of this paper is to present a rare case of DLBCL in an 84-years-old diabetic male patient on methylprednisolone treatment for autoimmune hemolytic anemia. The lesion appeared clinically as exposed necrotic bone of th…
Burkitt's lymphoma of the jaws in the Amazon region of Brazil
2014
Objectives: To describe the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of Burkitt's lymphoma of the jaws in 7 patients of Northern Brazil. Study Design: Clinical data concerning gender, age, affected site, clinical presentation, symptomatology and follow-up were collected from the clinical files. Histopathology was complemented with a broad immunohistochemical panel and in situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Results: Most of the patients were infants and 5 out of 7 were males. The mandible was affected in 5 cases and all patients also presented abdominal involvement. All cases were positive for CD45, CD20, CD79a, CD10, Bcl-6 and EBV. Ki-67 proliferative index was approx…
The iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin: A possible therapeutic target?
2015
The maintenance of stable extracellular and intracellular iron concentrations requires the coordinated regulation of iron transport into plasma. Iron is a fundamental cofactor for several enzymes involved in oxidation-reduction reactions. The redox ability of iron can lead to the production of oxygen free radicals, which can damage various cellular components. Therefore, the appropriate regulation of systemic iron homeostasis is decisive in vital processes. Hepcidin has emerged as the central regulatory molecule of systemic iron homeostasis. It is synthesized in hepatocytes and in other cells and released into the circulation. It inhibits the release of iron from enterocytes of the duodenum…
NPM-ALK-reactive T-cell responses in children and adolescents with NPM-ALK positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma
2019
ABSTRACT The oncoantigen nucleophosmin-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (NPM-ALK) induces cellular and humoral immune responses in patients with NPM-ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). We characterize the NPM-ALK-specific T-cell responses in a cohort of pediatric and adolescent ALCL-patients in remission without Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA)-preselection. First, we assessed NPM-ALK-reactive T-cell responses and their HLA-class I restriction in patients by using dendritic cells (DCs) transfected with in vitro transcribed (IVT) NPM-ALK-RNA for CD8 (n = 20) or CD3 (n = 9) T-cell stimulation. NPM-ALK-specific T-cells were detected in twelve of 29 patients (nine of 20 with CD8-selected…
Immunosenescence and lymphomagenesis
2018
Abstract One of the most important determinants of aging-related changes is a complex biological process emerged recently and called “immunosenescence”. Immunosenescence refers to the inability of an aging immune system to produce an appropriate and effective response to challenge. This immune dysregulation may manifest as increased susceptibility to infection, cancer, autoimmune disease, and vaccine failure. At present, the relationship between immunosenescence and lymphoma in elderly patients is not defined in a satisfactory way. This review presents a brief overview of the interplay between aging, cancer and lymphoma, and the key topic of immunosenescence is addressed in the context of t…
Protection of Mice from Acute Graft-versus-Host Disease Requires CD28 Co-stimulation on Donor CD4+ Foxp3+ Regulatory T Cells
2017
Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell plus T cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). In this study, we investigated the requirement for CD28 co-stimulation of donor CD4\(^{+}\) conventional (CD4\(^{+}\)CD25\(^{-}\)Foxp3\(^{-}\), Tconv) and regulatory (CD4\(^{+}\)CD25\(^{+}\)Foxp3\(^{+}\), Treg) T cells in aGvHD using tamoxifen-inducible CD28 knockout (iCD28KO) or wild-type (wt) littermates as donors of CD4\(^{+}\) Tconv and Treg. In the highly inflammatory C57BL/6 into BALB/c allo-HSCT transplantation model, CD28 depletion on donor CD4\(^{+}\) Tconv reduced clinical signs of aGvHD, but did not significantly pro…
Diagnosis of exon 12‐positive polycythemia vera rescued by NGS
2020
Abstract A JAK2V617F‐negative polycythemia associated with low serum epo needs to be tested for an exon 12 JAK2 mutation. When negative, due to potential serious complications in PV, a next generation sequencing is necessary to rule out false negative results.
