Sappho, Hegel and Michael Field: Paradox and desire in lyric III

2021

This article offers a close reading of Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper’s lyric III in Long Ago, a Sapphic volume of verse published in 1889 under the collaborative nom de plume of Michael Field. This collection articulates a dramatic inquiry into the tragedy of unrequited love in a long cycle of lyrics whose third piece most effectively encapsulates the kernel of what the Fields reconstruct as Sappho’s ambivalent eroticism. The outcome of this reconstruction, as analysed in light of lyric III, is a consistent Hegelian view of desire that subsumes a complex system of tropes, myths, paradoxes and imaginative strategies under an overarching ideology of desire as a radical experience of appr…

A Comparative Analysis of Translations of Lucian Blaga’s Poetry into English

2020

Abstract The complexity of Lucian Blaga’s poetry is a matter of common knowledge. Part of this complexity is related to the elements of prosody that Blaga skilfully employs, to say nothing of the philosophical vein which infuses his writings, and which derives, understandably, from his philosophical work. Mention should also be made of the lyrical character of Blaga’s dramatic works, which adds significantly to the effort of translating his writings into English, or any other language for that matter. In what follows, we intend to offer a bird’s eye view of the volumes that have been translated into English and to analyse a selection of poems comparatively, in order to signal challenges and…

Teaching Petrarchan and Anti-Petrarchan Discourses in Early Modern English Lyrics

2012

The aim of the present article is to help students realize that Petrarchism has been an influential source of inspiration for Early Modern English lyrics. Its topics and conventions have lent themselves to a wide variety of appropriations which the present selection of texts for analysis tries to illustrate. A few telling examples from Spenser, Sidney, Donne and Marvell have been chosen where the topic of the lady cast as a valuable treasure is variously addressed. Whereas Spenser’s Sonnet 15 of his Amoretti conveys the lover’s confident hope of its possession in a near marriage, Sidney’s Sonnet 37 of Astrophil and Stella portrays his frustration at the idea of being robbed of his cherished…

Conscious Entertainment: Commitment in the Reggae Lyrics of Clinton Fearon and Protoje

2016

International audience; This article provides an analysis of the lyrics of Clinton Fearon and Protoje, two major figures of contemporary Jamaican popular music. They are consistently described as committed singers/songwriters and proficient lyricists in a context where reggae music and culture are seen as falling into the excesses of violence and “slackness.” A study of commitment in their respective last two albums will show that despite some contradictions, conscious reggae is still alive today.

Zur Entstehung der griechischen Chorlyrik

2019

Effects of musical valence on the cognitive processing of lyrics

2016

The effects of music on the brain have been extensively researched, and numerous connections have been found between music and language, music and emotion, and music and cognitive processing. Despite this work, these three research areas have never before been drawn together into a single research paradigm. This is significant as their combination could lead to valuable insights into the effects of musical valence on the cognitive processing of lyrics. This research draws on theories of cognitive processing suggesting that negative moods facilitate systematic and detail-oriented processing, while positive moods facilitate heuristic-based processing. The current study ( n = 56) used an erro…

MEMORIZING SONG LYRICS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION DURING THE MUSIC LESSON

2020

Aim. The aim of the study is to identify what techniques students use to memorise song lyrics, how much time is needed to do that, and whether and in what way their parents help them learn the song. The theoretical part of the study analyses previous researches on memorisation in the context of general psychology, age-related psychology, and music psychology.
Method. The empirical study involved 47 (N=47) second-grade students of the comprehensive school (25 girls and 22 boys). Three study questions are raised in this paper: what techniques do students use to learn how to memorise song lyrics? How much time does a student need to learn singing a song by heart? Do parents help students…

Sesquiterpenes from Onopordum illyricum and their antifeedant activity

2012

Phytochemical investigation of the acetone extract of the aerial parts of Onopordum illyricum L. afforded five known sesquiterpenoids: compounds 3 and 4 already isolated from O. illirycum, and 8α-[4′-hydroxymethacryloyloxy]-sonchucarpolide (1), 8α-[4′-hydroxymethacryloyloxy]-4-epi-sonchucarpolide (2) and 8-(4′-hydroxymethacryloyl)-dehydromelitensin (5), not previously detected in this species. Compounds 4 and 5 showed moderate antifeedant activity against larvae of Spodoptera littoralis.
