International audience; A 15 km à l'Est de Niamey (Sud-Ouest du Niger), une prospection pédestre exhaustive a permis de dénombrer plus de 4000 bas-fourneaux sur un bassin versant de 24 km². Ils sont identifiables par la présence de scories correspondant aux résidus de réduction du fer. Ce grand nombre de structures de réduction est lié au fonctionnement à usage unique des bas-fourneaux, qui est peu étudié dans la région ouest africaine. Les premières études de répartition spatiale montrent que l'implantation de ces bas-fourneaux est principalement soumise à la géomorphologie. This report presents the results of a second series of excavations carried out between the oppidum of Boviolles and the ancient city of Nasium. It affects an occupation dated between La Tène D2 and the beginning of the augustean period, characterized by a causeway linking the two entities, a level delivering traces of artisanal activities, wells and a cooking kiln. This occupation is also characterized by the presence of the Roman army embodied in many militaria. This presence is central to the issue of the development of the ancient settlement of Nasium.

L’occupation se caractérise tout d’abord par une batterie au moins une soixantaine de silos de la transition entre le premier et le second Âge du Fer avec un bruit de fond Néolithique (mobilier résiduel) et Bronze final (quelques fosses et silos). Certains de ces silos ont livré un important mobilier céramique qui, couplé à des rejets de forges et des objets attestant d’un travail de tissage, pourrait indiquer la présence d’un habitat associé à proximité immédiate. L’activité métallurgique est attestée dès le Hallstatt D3.Si aucune inhumation n’a été retrouvé dans les silos, quelques ossements humains épars ont été prélevé dans quatre d’entre eux. The Onnen sword was found in 1896 while exploiting a peat bog, about 1.5 m deep. It is a so-called “antennae” sword, named after the spirals at the top of the pommel and it dates back to last phase of the Bronze Age (ca. 9th century BC). The Groninger Museum now curates the sword with inventory number 1896/I 4. Although this sword is already mentioned in the archaeological literature, it was never correctly published. Its recent study in the cultural heritage agency of The Netherlands gives us a good opportunity to make a detailed presentation as well as to investigate its production techniques to discuss its possible origins.
