Relationship between domestic smoking and metals and rare earth elements concentration in indoor PM2.5

2018

Cigarette smoke is the main source of indoor chemical and toxic elements. Cadmium (Cd), Thallium (Tl), Lead (Pb) and Antimony (Sb) are important contributors to smoke-related health risks. Data on the association between Rare Earth Elements (REE) Cerium (Ce) and Lanthanum (La) and domestic smoking are scanty. To evaluate the relationship between cigarette smoke, indoor levels of PM2.5 and heavy metals, 73 children were investigated by parental questionnaire and skin prick tests. The houses of residence of 41 "cases" and 32 "controls" (children with and without respiratory symptoms, respectively) were evaluated by 48-hours PM2.5 indoor/outdoor monitoring. PM2.5 mass concentration was determi…

Cieto daļiņu atmosfēras piesārņojuma mainība autotransporta ietekmes rezultātā Jēkabpilī

2018

2022

Bakalaura darba “Atmosfēras piesārņojuma dozimetriskais novērtējums” ir apkopota zinātniskā literatūra par atmosfēras piesārņojumu pilsētvidē, tā ietekmi uz cilvēku veselību, meteoroloģisko parametru ietekmi uz gaisa kvalitāti, maršruta izvēles nozīmi, lai mazinātu uzņemto gaisa piesārņojuma daudzumu. Darba praktiskajā daļā veikti mērījumi piesārņotājiem PM2.5, PM10, PM1 un gaistošajiem organiskajiem savienojumiem laika periodā no 03.10.2021. līdz 14.04.2022. dažādās nedēļas dienās un ekspozīcijas laikos. Mērījumi veikti, izmantojot personificētu gaisa piesārņojuma mērītāju dozimetru. Iegūtie piesārņojošo vielu koncentrāciju mērījumi analizēti, izmantojot korelāciju analīzi un dispersijas a…

Air pollution, residential greenness and metabolic dysfunction during early pregnancy in the infancia y medio ambiente (Inma) cohort

2021

Despite extensive study, the role of air pollution in gestational diabetes remains unclear, and there is limited evidence of the beneficial impact of residential greenness on metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy. We used data from mothers in the Spanish INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project from 2003–2008. We obtained spatiotemporally resolved estimates of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposures in early pregnancy and estimated residential greenness using satellite-based Normal Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within 100, 300 and 500 m buffers surrounding the mother’s residence. We applied logistic regression models to evaluate associations between each o…

Primary glioblastomas with and without EGFR amplification: Relationship to genetic alterations and clinicopathological features

2009

Glioblastomas express a notable heterogeneity in both the histological and cell patterns with glial astrocytic differentiation. Primary glioblastoma, which is the most frequent presentation (90-95%), occurs mainly in older patients and arises de novo, without any clinical or histological evidence of a less malignant precursor lesion. EGFR amplification has been identified as a genetic hallmark of primary glioblastomas and occurs in 40-60% of cases. However, there exist primary glioblastomas without EGFR amplification/overexpression. The purpose of this study was to stabilize the association between cases with and without EGFR gene amplification with clinical and genetic parameters in 45 cas…

Cap disease uncapped

2007

With the advent of enzyme histochemistry and electron microscopy, the new nosographic group of congenital myopathies hailed as ‘‘new myopathies’’ [1] was established, largely based on morphological features in biopsied muscle specimens although clinically early (congenital) onset and mild progression were also attributed to these childhood myopathies. When molecular investigations of patients with hereditary neuromuscular diseases began, earlier classifications based on clinical, morphological, and metabolic criteria started to quake, most conspicuously observed in the group of limb girdle muscular dystrophy or limb girdle muscular syndrome, which now comprise seven autosomal dominant (LGMD…

Background Acute exacerbation (AE) of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a common cause of disease acceleration in IPF and has a major impact on mortality. The role of macrophage activation in AE of IPF has never been addressed before. Methods We evaluated BAL cell cytokine profiles and BAL differential cell counts in 71 IPF patients w/wo AE and in 20 healthy volunteers. Twelve patients suffered from AE at initial diagnosis while sixteen patients developed AE in the 24 months of follow-up. The levels of IL-1ra, CCL2, CCL17, CCL18, CCL22, TNF-α, IL-1β, CXCL1 and IL-8 spontaneously produced by BAL-cells were analysed by ELISA. Results In patients with AE, the percentage of BAL neutrophils…

A novel peripherally restricted cannabinoid receptor antagonist, AM6545, reduces food intake and body weight, but does not cause malaise, in rodents

2010

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonists reduce food intake and body weight, but clinical use in humans is limited by effects on the CNS. We have evaluated a novel cannabinoid antagonist (AM6545) designed to have limited CNS penetration, to see if it would inhibit food intake in rodents, without aversive effects. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Cannabinoid receptor binding studies, cAMP assays, brain penetration studies and gastrointestinal motility studies were carried out to assess the activity profile of AM6545. The potential for AM6545 to induce malaise in rats and the actions of AM6545 on food intake and body weight were also investigated. KEY RESULTS AM6545 binds to CB1 recep…
