Ground state properties of manganese isotopes across the N=28 shell closure

Abstract The first optical study of the N = 28 shell closure in manganese is reported. Mean-square charge radii and quadrupole moments, obtained for ground and isomeric states in 50–56 Mn, are extracted using new calculations of atomic factors. The charge radii show a well defined shell closure at the magic number. The behaviour of the charge radii is strikingly different to that of the neutron separation energies where no shell effect can be observed. The nuclear parameters can be successfully described by large scale shell model calculations using the GXPF1A interaction.
Peculiarities in fragment mass distribution in the 238U + 40Ar (243 MeV) reaction

A pronounced fine structure (FS) in the form of distinct peaks was observed in neutron gated mass spectra from the decay of the 278110 composite system produced in the reaction 238U + 40Ar (243 MeV) at an initial excitation energy E * > 70 MeV. The FS peaks are located in the vicinity of mass numbers 70-80, 100, and 130, which correspond to those of magic nuclei (clusters). In the data there is also evidence for a new type of decay -- collinear cluster tripartition of an excited nucleus.
Low-lying states in near-magic odd-odd nuclei and the effective interaction

The iterative quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) method we previously developed [Phys. Rev. C 81, 034312 (2010); 86, 024303 (2012); 86, 014307 (2012)] to accurately calculate properties of individual nuclear states is extended so that it can be applied for nuclei with odd numbers of neutrons and protons. The approach is based on the proton-neutron QRPA (pnQRPA) and uses an iterative non-Hermitian Arnoldi diagonalization method where the QRPA matrix does not have to be explicitly calculated and stored. The method is used to calculate excitation energies of proton-neutron multiplets for several nuclei. The influence of a pairing interaction in the T = 0 channel is studied.
Combining HR-MAS and In Vivo MRI and MRSI Information for Robust Brain Tumor Recognition

In this study we propose to classify short echotime brain MRSI data by using multimodal information coming from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and high resolution magic angle spinning (HR-MAS), and to develop an advanced pattern recognition method that could help clinicians in diagnosing brain tumors. We study the impact of using HR-MAS information in combination with in vivo information for classifying brain tumors and we investigate which parameters influence our classification results.

Improved Magic Ink Signatures Using Hints

We introduce two improvements to the recently proposed so called magic ink DSS signatures. A first improvement is that we reduce the overhead for tracing without noticeably increasing any other cost. The tracing cost is linear in the number of generated signatures in the original proposal; our improved version reduces this to a logarithmic cost in the common case. A second improvement is that we introduce a method for determining whether forged currency is in circulation, without affecting the privacy of honest users. AbstractIn the spectrum of the algebra of symmetric analytic functions of bounded type on ℓp, 1 ≤ p < +∞, and along the same lines as the general non-symmetric case, we define and study a convolution operation and give a formula for the ‘radius’ function. It is also proved that the algebra of analytic functions of bounded type on ℓ1 is isometrically isomorphic to an algebra of symmetric analytic functions on a polydisc of ℓ1. We also consider the existence of algebraic projections between algebras of symmetric polynomials and the corresponding subspace of subsymmetric polynomials.
