Revisiting spin cycloids in multiferroic BiFeO3

2018

We revisit the inverse spin current model that has been previously used to explain the existence of magnetic cycloids in bulk multiferroic ${\mathrm{BiFeO}}_{3}$. Using a first-principles-based effective Hamiltonian method, and in combination with Monte Carlo simulations, we predict a magnetic phase diagram as a function of first- and second-nearest-neighbor interaction strength in the spin current model and show that, in contrast with previous understanding, both first and second nearest neighbors have to be taken into account to be in accordance with experimental findings, including the existence of type-1 and type-2 cycloids with, respectively, $[1\overline{1}0]$ and $[11\overline{2}]$ p…

Néel Spin-Orbit Torque Driven Antiferromagnetic Resonance in Mn2Au Probed by Time-Domain THz Spectroscopy

2018

We observe the excitation of collective modes in the terahertz (THz) range driven by the recently discovered Neel spin-orbit torques (NSOTs) in the metallic antiferromagnet Mn_{2}Au. Temperature-dependent THz spectroscopy reveals a strong absorption mode centered near 1 THz, which upon heating from 4 to 450 K softens and loses intensity. A comparison with the estimated eigenmode frequencies implies that the observed mode is an in-plane antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR). The AFMR absorption strength exceeds those found in antiferromagnetic insulators, driven by the magnetic field of the THz radiation, by 3 orders of magnitude. Based on this and the agreement with our theory modeling, we inf…

Magnetopolaron in a weakly elliptical InAs/GaAs quantum dot

2003

We study theoretically the properties of a polaron formed in a shallow, weakly elliptical, disk-shaped InAs/GaAs quantum dot in the presence of a magnetic field by using the Davydov's canonical transformation. Special attention is paid to the energy-level splitting due to the Frohlich interaction of an electron in a quantum dot with optical phonons near resonance. The polaron relaxation rates, including the anharmonicity induced channel, are analyzed for various confinement energies and magnetic field magnitudes, taking into account coherent polaronic effects.

Electronic structure of quantum dots

2002

The properties of quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots are reviewed. Experimental techniques for measuring the electronic shell structure and the effect of magnetic fields are briefly described. The electronic structure is analyzed in terms of simple single-particle models, density-functional theory, and "exact" diagonalization methods. The spontaneous magnetization due to Hund's rule, spin-density wave states, and electron localization are addressed. As a function of the magnetic field, the electronic structure goes through several phases with qualitatively different properties. The formation of the so-called maximum-density droplet and its edge reconstruction is discussed, and…

Interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Kitaev interactions for magnonic properties of Heisenberg-Kitaev honeycomb ferromagnets

2020

The properties of Kitaev materials are attracting ever increasing attention owing to their exotic properties. In realistic two-dimensional materials, Kitaev interaction is often accompanied by the Dzyloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which poses a challenge of distinguishing their magnitude separately. In this work, we demonstrate that it can be done by accessing magnonic transport properties. By studying honeycomb ferromagnets exhibiting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Kitaev interactions simultaneously, we reveal non-trivial magnonic topological properties accompanied by intricate magnonic transport characteristics as given by thermal Hall and magnon Nernst effects. We also investigate the effect …

Chiral Hall Effect in Noncollinear Magnets from a Cyclic Cohomology Approach

2020

We demonstrate the emergence of an anomalous Hall effect in chiral magnetic textures which is neither proportional to the net magnetization nor to the well-known emergent magnetic field that is responsible for the topological Hall effect. Instead, it appears already at linear order in the gradients of the magnetization texture and exists for one-dimensional magnetic textures such as domain walls and spin spirals. It receives a natural interpretation in the language of Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry. We show that this chiral Hall effect resembles the familiar topological Hall effect in essential properties while its phenomenology is distinctly different. Our findings make the reinterp…

2017

Topological magnetic textures - like skyrmions - have become a major player in the design of next-generation magnetic storage technology due to their stability and the control of their motion by ultra-low current densities. A major challenge to develop this new skyrmion-based technology is to achieve the controlled and deterministic creation of magnetic skyrmions without the need of complex setups. We demonstrate a solution to this challenge by showing how to create skyrmions and other magnetic textures in ferromagnetic thin films by means of a homogeneous DC current and without requiring Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. This is possible by exploiting a static loss of stability arising f…

Properties of the Ising magnet confined in a corner geometry

2007

Abstract The properties of Ising square lattices with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic exchange confined in a corner geometry, are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Free boundary conditions at which boundary magnetic fields ± h are applied, i.e., at the two boundary rows ending at the lower left corner a field + h acts, while at the two boundary rows ending at the upper right corner a field − h acts. For temperatures T less than the critical temperature T c of the bulk, this boundary condition leads to the formation of two domains with opposite orientation of the magnetization direction, separated by an interface which for T larger than the filling transition temperature T f ( h ) …

Observation of sequential spin flips in quantum rings

2011

We observe strong signatures of spin flips in quantum rings exposed to external magnetic fields in the Coulomb blockade regime. The signatures appear as a pattern of lines corresponding to local reduction of conductance, and they cover a large range of magnetic fields and number of electrons. The sequence of lines, as well as other features in the conductance, can be captured by many-electron calculations within density-functional theory. The calculations show that most lines in the pattern correspond to sequential spin flips between filling factors 2 and 1. We believe that the ability to probe individual spin flips provides an important step toward precise spin control in quantum ring devi…
