Multifunctional magnetic materials obtained by insertion of a spin-crossover Fe(III) complex into bimetallic oxalate-based ferromagnets.

The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of the compounds of formula [Fe(III)(sal(2)-trien)][Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)(3)].CH(2)Cl(2) (1; H(2)sal(2)-trien=N,N'-disalicylidenetriethylenetetramine, ox=oxalate), [Fe(III)(sal(2)-trien)][Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)(3)].CH(3)OH (2), [In(III)(sal(2)-trien)][Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)(3)].0.25H(2)O.0.25CH(3)OH.0.25CH(3)CN (3), and [In(III)(sal(2)-trien)][Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)(3)].CH(3)NO(2).0.5H(2)O (4) are reported. Photoswitchable coordination compounds

2001

Photoswitchable compounds represent an attractive class of materials in coordination chemistry. Recent progress dealing with transition metal compounds involving photo-induced changes of the magnetic and/or optical properties to long-lived metastable states are covered in the present review article. The basic photophysical phenomena together with representative examples such as nitroprusside derivatives, relevant spin crossover complexes, stilbenoid complexes and finally Prussian blue analogues are discussed. Some possible applications regarding energy and information storage are suggested at the end.

Magneto-structural versatility of copper(II)-3-phenylpropionate coordination polymers with N-donor coligands.

A novel series of copper(II) coordination polymers [Cu2(O2CC8H9)4(pyz)]n (1), [Cu2(O2CC8H9)4(dps)]n (2), {[Cu(O2CC8H9)2(dps)(H2O)]·H2O}n (3), {[NaCu(O2CC8H9)2(bpm)(NO3)]·H2O}n (4), and [Cu4(O2CC8H9)6(OH)2(bpp)2]n (5) [O2CC8H9− = 3-phenylpropionate anion, pyz = pyrazine, dps = di(4-pyridyl)sulfide, bpm = 2,2′-bipyrimidine, and bpp = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane] have been synthesized and magneto-structurally investigated. Comb-Branched Polymers:  Monte Carlo Simulation and Scaling

The Monte Carlo simulation technique (the bond fluctuation model) has been used for the study of the equilibrium conformations of comb-branched polymers consisting of a long flexible main chain and side chains grafted at a regular separation onto the main chain. The solvent has been supposed to be good (athermal) for the main and side chains. The global conformation and the gyration radius of the polymer, as well as the local conformational structure of the comb, have been analyzed as functions of the length of the side chains and spacers. Isoreticular two-dimensional magnetic coordination polymers prepared through pre-synthetic ligand functionalization

Chemical functionalization is a powerful approach to tailor the physical and chemical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, increase their processability and stability, tune their functionalities and, even, create new 2D materials. This is typically achieved through post-synthetic functionalization by anchoring molecules on the surface of an exfoliated 2D crystal, but it inevitably alters the long-range structural order of the material. Solvent-Free Synthesis of a Pillared Three-Dimensional Coordination Polymer with Magnetic Ordering

A new magnetic coordination polymer, [Fe(bipy)(im)2] (bipy = 4,4-bipyridine and im = imidazole), has been synthesized in a solvent-free reaction. Structural analysis reveals a pillared 3D coordination polymer composed by neutral layers, formed by iron(II) and imidazolate linkers, interconnected by bipy ligands which serve as pillars. Magnetic measurements show that the material magnetically orders at low temperatures (Tc = 14.5 K) as a weak ferromagnet, likely due to a spin canting.

Dinuclear copper(II) complexes as testing ground for molecular magnetism theory

Abstract A leitmotiv in the field of molecular magnetism is the study of the electron exchange (EE) magnetic interactions among distant metal centers through the corresponding bridging ligands in polynuclear coordination compounds. Synthesis and Characterization of a Soluble Bimetallic Oxalate-Based Bidimensional Magnet:  [K(18-crown-6)]3[Mn3(H2O)4{Cr(ox)3}3]

The "templating" K crown ether cation allows for the preparation of soluble layered oxalate-based bimetallic magnets, as in [K(18-crown-6]3{Mn3(H2O)4[Cr(ox)3]3}, with an unprecedented bidimensional polymeric anionic network that involves both oxalato bridges and H bonds. As in other 2D oxalate-bridged compounds, the compound behaves as a soft ferromagnet, with the onset of magnetic ordering occurring at 3.3 K.

Abstract The reactions between the copper (II) salts [CuXL]PF6 (L: 2,6-[1-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)ethyl]pyridine) (X = Cl 1, X = Br 2) and LiTCNQ, in a DMF/water mixture, or Et3NH(TCNQ)2, in acetone, produced the new complexes [CuXL(TCNQ)] (X = Cl 3, X = Br 4). For both compounds, crystallographic studies have clearly evidenced the existence of dimeric complexes [{CuClL}(TCNQ)]2 owing to π–π overlap between two adjacent TCNQ − radical anions. Compound 1 reacted with Et4N(C10N7) to afford the mononuclear derivative [CuClL(C10N7)] (5), while its reaction with K2C10N6 produced the dinuclear complex [(CuClL)2(C10N6)] (6).
