A metallographic study of two pre-roman Iberian arms, affected by a cremation process, revealed the presence of an outer magnetite layer, providing highly protective properties. This layer is extraordinarily tenacious and of very homogeneous thickness, indicating an intentional manufacturing process rather than an accidental formation during the severe heating/cooling cycles the artefact suffered. In this work, a method for the separation of triacylglycerols (TAGs) present in human milk and from other mammalian species by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography using a core–shell particle packed column with UV and evaporative light-scattering detectors is described. Under optimal conditions, a mobile phase containing acetonitrile/n-pentanol at 10 °C gave an excellent resolution among more than 50 TAG peaks. A small-scale method for fat extraction in these milks (particularly of interest for human milk samples) using minimal amounts of sample and reagents was also developed. The authors examined a total of 519 nodules diagnosed preoperatively as mammary fibroadenomas between 1986 and 1991. 235 nodules were removed immediately after diagnosis, either because they had a diameter of over 3 cm or because they were present in women over 45 years old. The preoperative diagnosis was confirmed in 94.9% of cases and after histological examination the nodule was only found to be a carcinoma in one case (0,4%). Those cases not operated at the time of diagnosis were monitored for period of 2 years. At the end of this period 118 nodules had been removed due to a more or less rapid increase in volume.
