Eight million years of maintained heterozygosity in chromosome homologs of cercopithecine monkeys
2020
In the Cercopithecini ancestor two chromosomes, homologous to human chromosomes 20 and 21, fused to form the Cercopithecini specific 20/21 association. In some individuals from the genus Cercopithecus, this association was shown to be polymorphic for the position of the centromere, suggesting centromere repositioning events. We set out to test this hypothesis by defining the evolutionary history of the 20/21 association in four Cercopithecini species from three different genera. The marker order of the various 20/21 associations was established using molecular cytogenetic techniques, including an array of more than 100 BACs. We discovered that five different forms of the 20/21 association w…
Chronic exposure to a GSM-like signal (mobile phone) does not stimulate the development of DMBA-induced mammary tumors in rats: results of three cons…
2002
Certain epidemiological and experimental studies raised concerns about the safety of radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields because of a possible increased risk of leukemia and lymphoma. In this study, an RF field used in mobile telecommunication was tested using 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced mammary tumors in female Sprague-Dawley rats as a model for human breast cancer. Three experiments were carried out under strictly standardized conditions and were started on the same day of three consecutive years. The field consisted of a GSM-like signal (900 MHz pulsed at 217 Hz, pulse width 577 micros) of relatively low power flux density (100 microW/cm(2) +/- 3 dB) and was appl…
Association of Taste Perception for Sweet, Salt, Sour, Bitter and Umami and Food Intake Among Community-dwelling Adults in the PREDIMED-PLUS Trial (P…
2019
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between taste perception for sweet, salt, sour, bitter and umami and food category intakes. We hypothesized that greater taste perception will be inversely associated with the amount consumed. METHODS: A cross-sectional baseline analysis was performed on community-dwelling overweight adults with metabolic syndrome (N = 367, 55–75y) from the PREDIMED-PLUS Trial, University of Valencia Center, Spain. Taste perception was determined by challenging subjects with standard solutions of sweet, salt, sour, bitter and umami (400 mM sucrose, 200 mM NaCl, 34 mM citric acid, 5.6 mM phenylthiocarbamide (PTC), 200 mM monopotassium glutamate, respectively) and ev…

2013
Abstract Several new benzamides 4a–q were synthesized by stirring in pyridine the acid chlorides 3a–q with the appropriate anthranilamide derivatives 2a–g. Some of the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative activity against a panel of 5 human cell lines (K562 human chronic myelogenous leukemia cells, MCF-7 breast cancer cells, HTC-116 and HT26 colon cancer cells and NCI H460 non-small cell lung cancer cells).
DNA-DNA hybridization and ribotyping of Acidovorax delafieldii isolates from eels and aquatic environments
1992
Eleven strains of Acidovorax isolated from a freshwater lake and from healthy and diseased European eels in a hatchery were investigated by genotypic methods. DNA-DNA slot blot hybridization confirmed the identity of all strains as A. delafieldii. Isolates were heterogeneous in EcoR1 ribopatterns with four types recognizable. Most freshwater and healthy eel strains had the same ribotype but differed from the disease-associated strains. Typical ribopatterns of A. delafieldii contained 1·3, 1·5, and 3·2 kb fragments which provided useful additional taxonomic markers for species identification.
Bacteria from acidic to strongly alkaline insect midguts: Potential sources of extreme cellulolytic enzymes
2012
Abstract Bacterial isolates from the European Corn Borer (ECB) Ostrinia nubilalis and the coleopteran Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB) Leptinotarsa decemlineata midguts were identified and characterized. Twenty-four colonies, selected on solid media with cellulose as the sole carbon source and pH values ranging from 5 to 12, were identified through 16S sequencing as members of the genera Acinetobacter , Comamonas , Klebsiella , Microbacterium , Micrococcus and Sphingobacterium . A complete enzymatic characterization revealed widespread – albeit moderate – cellulase properties in all but one isolate and high xylanase activity in the four CPB isolates. Different enzymatic patterns in terms of opt…
Taste perception and behavior in rodents and flies
2010
Taste, one of the five senses, plays a key role in food ingestion. The recent identification of molecular markers for taste cells (e.g., taste receptors and signaling components) has provided tools to investigate the functional organization of the gustatory system. This new information contributes to our understanding of taste-associated behaviors.
MetNet: A two-level approach to reconstructing and comparing metabolic networks
2021
Metabolic pathway comparison and interaction between different species can detect important information for drug engineering and medical science. In the literature, proposals for reconstructing and comparing metabolic networks present two main problems: network reconstruction requires usually human intervention to integrate information from different sources and, in metabolic comparison, the size of the networks leads to a challenging computational problem. We propose to automatically reconstruct a metabolic network on the basis of KEGG database information. Our proposal relies on a two-level representation of the huge metabolic network: the first level is graph-based and depicts pathways a…
