Information on aging, maturation, and growth is important for understanding life histories of organisms. In extinct dinosaurs, such information can be derived from the histological growth record preserved in the mid-shaft cortex of long bones. Here, we construct growth models to estimate ages at death, ages at sexual maturity, ages at which individuals were fully-grown, and maximum growth rates from the growth record preserved in long bones of six sauropod dinosaur individuals (one indeterminate mamenchisaurid, two Apatosaurus sp., two indeterminate diplodocids, and one Camarasaurus sp.) and one basal sauropodomorph dinosaur individual (Plateosaurus engelhardti). Using these estimates, we e…
Predicting Lung Deposition of Extrafine Inhaled Corticosteroid-Containing Fixed Combinations in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease U…
2021
Background: Functional respiratory imaging (FRI) is a computational fluid dynamics-based technique using three-dimensional models of human lungs and formulation profiles to simulate aerosol deposition. Methods: FRI was used to evaluate lung deposition of extrafine beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP)/formoterol fumarate (FF)/glycopyrronium bromide (GB) and extrafine BDP/FF delivered through pressurized metered dose inhalers and to compare results with reference gamma scintigraphy data. FRI combined high-resolution computed tomography scans of 20 patients with moderate-to-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (mean forced expiratory volume in 1 second 42% predicted) with in silico comput…
Water retention characteristics of substrates containing biochar and compost as peat and perlite replacements for ornamental plant production
2021
In Italy peat and perlite are commonly used as growth substrates in ornamental plant nurseries. Requests for ecologically sustainable growth substrates have recently focused research on the study of new media. In this context, biochar and compost, by-products of other production chains, may play a relevant role. Four growth substrates were prepared by mixing (v/v) different porous matrices including a 2-mm sieved sandy loam soil namely: 50% peat and 50% perlite (PPr), 50% compost and 50% biochar (CB), 25% peat, 25% perlite, 25% compost and 25% biochar (PPrCB) and 25% peat, 25% compost and 50% mineral soil (PCM). Water retention curves of porous matrices and growth substrates were determined…
Adverse cutaneous reactions associated with the newest antiretroviral drugs in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.
2008
HIV-infected patients have a higher risk of developing cutaneous reactions than the general population, which has a significant impact on patients' current and future care options. The severity of cutaneous adverse reactions varies greatly, and some may be difficult to manage. HIV-infected patients just at the beginning of antiretroviral treatment can frequently show a wide variety of adverse drug effects such as drug rashes, hyperpigmentation, hair loss, hypersensitivity reactions, injection site reaction, urticarial reaction, erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The early detection and treatment of cutaneous adverse drug reactions, plus identificati…
Triterpene Saponins from the Roots of Achyranthes bidentata
2001
Three saponins, oleanolic acid-28- O -s-D-glucopyranoside (1), chikusetsusaponin V (2), and 3- O -s-D-glucopyranosyl-oleanolic acid-28- O -s-D-glucopyranoside (3) were isolated from the roots of Achyranthes bidentata Blume (Amaranthaceae). No activity was shown in the granulocyte phagocytosis test nor in the test of the potentiation of the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in human colon cancer cells. This is the first report of compounds 1, 2 and 3 isolated from Achyranthes species. Furthermore, the NMR data of 2 completed the partially published data.
Ontogenetic and phylogenetic diversification of the hooded staminode in Marantaceae
2010
The flowers of Marantaceae are known for their unique pollination mechanism mediated by an explosive style movement. The mechanism is based on the highly modified elements of the inner androecial whorl, i.e., the single half-fertile anther and the fleshy and hooded staminodes. We investigated 67 species across 24 genera to elucidate which parts of the hooded staminode are shared by all species, thus likely under strong selection pressure, and which are allowed to vary. We treated hooded staminodes as character syndromes and grouped them based on gross similarities. We identified characters underlying the similarity and investigated their diversity and developmental pathways. All hooded stam…
Microwave heating as a tool for coupling Marangoni and Hickman instabilities
2007
The aim of this paper is the linear stability analysis of an evaporating interface in order to justify hydrodynamic behaviors observed during evaporation of water and ethanol simultaneously under microwave irradiation and reduced pressure. In relation to the local character of the thermal conversion of electromagnetic energy, and of the thermal dependency of the dielectric loss, it seems possible under microwave heating to induce a specific hydrodynamic compared to those induced by conventional heating.
Use of Heating Configuration to Control Marangoni Circulation during Droplet Evaporation
2022
The present work presents a numerical study of the evaporation of a sessile liquid droplet deposited on a substrate and subjected to different heating configurations. The physical formulation accounts for evaporation, the Marangoni effect, conductive transfer in the support, radiative heating, and diffusion–convection in the droplet itself. The moving interface is solved using the Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method. Simulations were performed using COMSOL Multiphysics. Different configurations were performed to investigate the effect of the heating conditions on the shape and intensity of the Marangoni circulations. A droplet can be heated by the substrate (different natures and thi…
