Studies on Instabilities and Patterns in Evaporating Liquids at Reduced Pressure and/or Microwave Irradiation
1990
This paper summarizes our recent experimental and theoretical work on the instabilities in liquids and at interfaces which form during evaporation at reduced pressure and/or microwave irradiation. We have observed a variety of patterns (Benard rolls, Marangoni waves, Hickman interface deformations) which depend on the value of the reduced pressure and the power of the incident beam.
Functioning of DcuC as the C 4 -Dicarboxylate Carrier during Glucose Fermentation by Escherichia coli
1999
ABSTRACT The dcuC gene of Escherichia coli encodes an alternative C 4 -dicarboxylate carrier (DcuC) with low transport activity. The expression of dcuC was investigated. dcuC was expressed only under anaerobic conditions; nitrate and fumarate caused slight repression and stimulation of expression, respectively. Anaerobic induction depended mainly on the transcriptional regulator FNR. Fumarate stimulation was independent of the fumarate response regulator DcuR. The expression of dcuC was not significantly inhibited by glucose, assigning a role to DcuC during glucose fermentation. The inactivation of dcuC increased fumarate-succinate exchange and fumarate uptake by DcuA and DcuB, suggesting a…
The ‘wonderful story ’constitutes an effective resource that myth provides to ancient societies to articulate and explain man’s relationship with nature and the presence or absence of divine protection.

Breeding system and fruit set in African Marantaceae
2013
Abstract Marantaceae are a pantropically distributed family of perennial herbs and lianas in the understory of tropical rainforests. They are characterized by a unique pollen transfer mechanism. To understand its functional significance and evolution, field investigations have been conducted in Gabon. Data from 28 (of 35) species from Central Africa are achieved. The pollen–ovule ratio (34–140:1; exception Sarcophrynium 2.5:1) falls into the range of facultative autogamous species. All investigated species were proven to be self-compatible; however, only two were autogamous. Natural fruit set was generally low (10.9 ± 10%). The highest natural fruit set was found in Marantochloa purpurea (2…
Pollination syndromes in African Marantaceae
2009
† Background and Aims The Marantaceae (550 spp.) is the most derived family in the order Zingiberales and exhibits a complex explosive pollination mechanism. To understand the evolutionary significance of this unique process of pollen transfer, comparative morphological and ecological studies were conducted in Gabon. † Methods During a total stay of 11 months, 31 species of Marantaceae were investigated at different sites in Gabon. The study included analyses of floral diversity, observations on the pollinator spectrum as well as ecological measurements (e.g. nectar sugar concentration and volume). † Key Results Analyses reveal five flower types based on flower size and pigmentation, spatia…

Drimane Sesquiterpenoids from Marasmius sp. Inhibiting the Conidial Germination of Plant-Pathogenic Fungi
2012
From the basidiomycete Marasmius sp., strain IBWF 96046, three new sesquiterpenoids based on the drimane skeleton were isolated and named marasmene B and marasmals B and C. In this study, their isolation, structure elucidation, and biological evaluation are described. The compounds have a pronounced inhibitory effect on the conidial germination of several plant-pathogenic fungi.
Fumarate dependent protein composition under aerobic and anaerobic growth conditions in Escherichia coli
2020
Abstract In the absence of sugars, C4-dicarboxylates (C4DC) like fumarate represent important substrates for growth of Escherichia coli. Aerobically, C4DCs are oxidized to CO2 whereas anaerobically, C4DCs are used for fumarate respiration. In order to determine the impact of fumarate under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, proteomes of E. coli W3110 grown aerobically or anaerobically with fumarate and/or the non-C4DC substrate glycerol were comparatively profiled by nanoLC-MS/MS. Membrane enrichment allowed sensitive detection of membrane proteins. A total of 1657 proteins of which 646 and 374 were assigned to the cytosol or membrane, respectively, were covered. Presence of fumarate trigger…
