A review of the assessment of the effects of protection in MPAs: current knowledge and gaps

Original data for article: Acute and chronic response to a change in salinity of the euryhaline polychaete Pygospio elegans (Claparède)
2019
These data were collected in an experimental study designed to evaluate the ability of the polychaete Pygospio elegans to cope with an acute as well as a long-term change in salinity. Specimens from Herslev, Denmark, originating from a salinity of about 15 were exposed to salinity 15 as control and 5 and 30 as low and high salinity treatments. After acute exposure, we measured body volume changes as well as gene expression of seven genes related to volume- and osmoregulation within 4 hours of exposure.

Quaternary development and evolution of the sedimentary environments in the Central Mediterranean Spanish coast
1995
Abstract The reconstruction of the evolutive phases of the Mediterranean Spanish Central sector during the Late Quaternary is the aim of this work. From geomorphological, sedimentological and chronometrical studies, different morphostratigraphic units are determined. Results point out the development of several transgressive phases. The older one go back to isotope stage 7. The Eemian transgression is broadly recorded, and its coastline was near the present one. During the Flandrian episode, the sea surpassed the current coastline in the northern coastal plain, while in the meridional littoral erosive notches were formed between +1 and +2 m. During the regressive events, we find the prograd…
Environmental evidence of Valencia lagoon coastal barrier stabilization from 8500 BP to Present. Climate and eustatic variations
2020
Abstract The Albufera de Valencia is one of the largest lagoon in the Spanish Mediterranean. Two continuous borehole cores reaching depths of 8 and 14 m in the northern part of the lagoon underwent sedimentological, micropaleontological and biological study. The organic content was also analysed, and 14C radiometric dating and amino acid racemization were performed. Study of the content of benthic foraminifera and n-alkanes and alkanoic acids in the lagoon sedimentary record identified several periods. The core records showed seven different environments: alluvial; freshwater marsh; brackish marsh; brackish lagoon; brackish lagoon with marine connection, backbarrier flat, and backshore. The…

Beach ridges from the Varanger Peninsula (Arctic Norwegian coast): Characteristics and significance
2009
The most common coastal sedimentary forms on the arctic coast of the Varanger Peninsula are raised beach ridge plains. The majority of the ridges consist of coarse material, but there are also sandy beach ridge areas close to the river mouths of some of the major rivers. Some bays having the same isostatic rebound and dynamic conditions have been studied to test if the number of beach ridges in each locality is significant to prove climatic changes, storminess, and rates of sediment accumulation, or if the number of beach ridges in each bay is only dependent on their intrinsic characteristics and self organization. Because the number of ridges varies not only from bay to bay, but even withi…
Impact of Holocene tsunamis detected in lagoonal environments on Corfu (Ionian Islands, Greece): Geomorphological, sedimentary and microfaunal eviden…
2016
Abstract In this paper, we present for the first time geomorphological, sedimentary and microfaunal evidence of palaeotsunami impact on Corfu (Ionian Islands, Greece). The island of Corfu is located in an area of exceptional tectonic stress: towards the south, the African oceanic plate is being subducted underneath the Aegean plate, whereas towards the north, the Adriatic and European plates form a continental collision zone. Recent publications provide evidence of earthquake related co-seismic movements that potentially trigger extreme wave events as well as relative sea level fluctuations. In this context, we investigated two selected near-coast geological archives – the Chalikiopoulou La…
Isotope distribution of dissolved carbonate species in southeastern coastal aquifers of Sicily (Italy)
2007
Concentrations of major ions and the δ13C composition of dissolved inorganic carbon in groundwater and submarine groundwater discharges in the area between Siracusa and Ragusa provinces, southeastern Sicily, representing coastal carbonate aquifers, are presented and discussed. Most of groundwater analysed belongs to calcium bicarbonate type, in agreement with the geological nature of carbonate host rocks. Carbonate groundwater acquires, besides the dissolution of carbonate minerals, dissolved carbon (and the relative isotopic composition) from the atmosphere and from soil biological activity. In fact, δ13C values and total dissolved inorganic carbon contents show that both these sources con…
