Conceptualizing ecosystem tipping points within a physiological framework

2017

Connecting the nonlinear and often counterintuitive physiological effects of multiple environmental drivers to the emergent impacts on ecosystems is a fundamental challenge. Unfortunately, the disconnect between the way “stressors” (e.g., warming) is considered in organismal (physiological) and ecological (community) contexts continues to hamper progress. Environmental drivers typically elicit biphasic physiological responses, where performance declines at levels above and below some optimum. It is also well understood that species exhibit highly variable response surfaces to these changes so that the optimum level of any environmental driver can vary among interacting species. Thus, specie…

New challenge for social inclusion - marine product processing development of mussel farming in the Baltic sea region

2020

Product recycling opportunities that potentially increase the value of the initial product create interest in creating and developing a field. Seafood is demanded product in the world but creating a higher value of the product the value of it can be increased and in many countries it helped to solve social problems with food provision and employment. Aim of research analysis of area for mollusc farming, and mollusc-processing options to explore opportunities for development of the field. By analysing views of public administrators, entrepreneurs and researchers in selected Baltic Sea Region countries. Based on expert viewpoint (public administrators, entrepreneurs and researchers that parti…

Living on the edge: Meoneura obscurella in the ‘Wieliczka’ Salt Mine (southern Poland) exhibits the first case of lecithotrophic ovoviviparity in the…

2021

During the studies on the invertebrate fauna of the subterranean part of the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine in Wieliczka, Poland, the presence of many specimens of the dipteran species Meoneura obscurella (Fallén 1823) was observed. Organic remains and faeces related to the presence of mice (Mus musculus) were indicated as a potential food source for the insects. M. obscurella displays lecithotrophic viviparity (ovoviviparity), which has developed due to extremely harsh abiotic conditions and a lack of food. This is the first documented case of lecithotrophic viviparity within the fly family Carnidae. Based on the ability of this species to inhabit and reproduce in the conditions of the subterranean…

Evidence of energy and nutrient transfer from invasive pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) spawners to juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and br…

2021

Recent large influxes of non‐native Pacific pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) to North European rivers have raised concern over their potential negative impacts on native salmonids and recipient ecosystems. The eggs and carcasses of semelparous pink salmon may provide a significant nutrient and energy subsidy to native biota, but this phenomenon has not been widely documented outside the species' native distribution. We analysed the stomach contents and stable isotope values (δ15N and δ13C) in muscle and liver tissues of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) to determine whether these native salmonids utilise marine‐derived nutrients and energy provided by…

Efficiency of Daphnia magna in removal of green microalgae cultivated in Nordic recirculating aquaculture system wastewater

2020

The increase of global aquaculture production has boosted the development of recirculating aquaculture systems not only because they reduce water use but also provide opportunities for waste management and the use of released nutrients. The dissolved nutrients can be efficiently removed from recirculating aquaculture system wastewater by microalgae, and microalgae can be harvested from the wastewater with low costs by zooplankton such as Daphnia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using microalgae and Daphnia for bioremediation of recirculating aquaculture system wastewater in Nordic conditions. We evaluated the growth and filtration efficiency of the waterflea Dap…

A probabilistic long‐term framework for site‐specific erosion analysis of wind turbine blades: A case study of 31 Dutch sites

2021

Abstract Rain‐induced leading‐edge erosion (LEE) of wind turbine blades (WTBs) is associated with high repair and maintenance costs. The effects of LEE can be triggered in less than 1 to 2 years for some wind turbine sites, whereas it may take several years for others. In addition, the growth of erosion may also differ for different blades and turbines operating at the same site. Hence, LEE is a site‐ and turbine‐specific problem. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic long‐term framework for assessing site‐specific lifetime of a WTB coating system. Case studies are presented for 1.5 and 10 MW wind turbines, where geographic bubble charts for the leading‐edge lifetime and number of repai…

Aircraft measurements of aerosol particles and trace gases over the Southern Baltic Sea during the BALTIC'15 campaign in 2015

2019

During the BALTIC'15 campaign, conducted in August 2015 over the Southern Baltic Sea, trace gasses (CO2/O3/NOy/SO2) and aerosol particles (number concentration of total/non-volatile/Aitken mode/ Accumulation mode/Coarse mode/refractory black carbon, aerosol extinction coefficient, mass concentration of refractory black carbon were measured). Observations were performed on board of the Alfred Wegener Institute research aircraft Polar 5 during 4 flights: - Scientific flight 1 (SF1) 26 August 2015 - Scientific flight 2 (SF2) 28 August 2015 - Scientific flight 3 (SF3) 28 August 2015 - Scientific flight 4 (SF4) 30 August 2015

Enabling Energy Savings in Offshore Mechatronic Systems by using Self-Contained Cylinders

2019

This paper proposes a novel actuation system for an offshore drilling application. It consists of three self-contained electro-hydraulic cylinders that can share and store regenerated energy. The energy saving potential of the proposed solution is analyzed through a multibody system simulation. The self-contained system demonstrates superior energy efficiency compared to the benchmark system representing the state-of-the-art approach used today (i.e., valve-controlled cylinders by means of pressure-compensated directional control valves and counter-balance valves, supplied by a centralized hydraulic power unit). Due to the power on demand capability, the cancellation of the throttling losse…
