On the Flexibility of the IEEE 802.11 Technology: Challenges and Directions

2011

The original 802.11 standard, which is the de-facto standard for contention-based wireless data networks, has shown to give poor performance or to be scarcely suitable for dealing with new PHY-layer technologies, networking scenarios, or service contexts, thus boosting the proliferation of projects, technical solutions and dedicated task groups for extending the basic protocol operations. In this paper, starting from the evolution analysis of current 802.11 standard and de- vices, we propose an architectural solution for making the medium access protocol programmable. Our basic idea, pursued within the FP7 EU Project FLAVIA [1], started in July 2010, is changing the role of the wireless net…

Wireless card virtualization: from virtual NICs to virtual MAC machines

2012

Virtualization has been a hot topic in computer science this last 10 years, and a key enabler to the recent advances. By technically enabling the Cloud paradigm, virtualization is becoming an inspiring source for the whole IT industry. At the same moment the virtualization of commodity PC was envisioned, Software Defined Radio started as a huge promise of efficient wireless transmission hardware. Unfortunately, the pace of innovation has still to reach the one of the PC virtualization. Yet, there is a another option. The current state of the art of hardware and software of wireless adapter in standard PC reveals interesting capabilities in terms of unused wireless capacity, processing power…

Lack of reactivation of tuberculosis in patients with psoriasis treated with secukinumab in a real-world setting of latent tuberculosis infection

2022

Background Some biologics for psoriasis, especially anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha therapies, may re-activate latent tuberculosis (TBC) infection with consequent morbidity and mortality. However, there is a low reported incidence of conversion to positive TBC status among patients with psoriasis treated with second-generation biologic therapies, particularly anti-interleukin (IL)-17 therapies such as secukinumab. Objectives To evaluate the safety profile of secukinumab in psoriasis patients with latent TBC infection. Methods Real-life data were collected by retrospective chart review on patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis who showed positivity for TBC screening at baseline an…

Overcoming resistance to HER2 blockade in breast cancer: AXL as a promising druggable target and prognostic biomarker

2022

Introduction: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease consisting of uncontrolled growth of epithelial cells originating in the ducts or breast lobules. It is currently the most diagnosed cancer worldwide and the fifth cause of cancer-related death in general population, but the first cause in women. Breast cancer incidence is higher in developed countries due to increased risk factors and to increased and earlier detection by mammography screening, which considerably reduces mortality. This is the reason why transitioning countries have higher mortality despite having lower incidence. Regarding the origin of the disease, it is evidenced that the pathways implicated in normal development of…

Good clinical response, remission, and predictors of remission in rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with tumor necrosis factor-α blockers: The GI…

2007

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of good clinical response and remission in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with longstanding disease treated with anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) drugs at outpatient clinics. METHODS: Retrospective national study of 14 academic tertiary referral rheumatology medical centers. RA patients with a Disease Activity Score (DAS28) > 3.2 were defined as having active disease and could start TNF-alpha blockers. All patients received one TNF-alpha blocker plus methotrexate (10-20 mg/wk). At the third month the patients were categorized as responders or nonresponders, based on improvement of at least 0.25 of the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ).…

Etanercept maintains the clinical benefit achieved by infliximab in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who discontinued infliximab because of side ef…

2007

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of switching to etanercept treatment in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who already responded to infliximab, but presented side effects. Methods: Charts of 553 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were retrospectively reviewed to select patients who responded to the treatment with infliximab and switched to etanercept because of occurrence of adverse effects. Clinical data were gathered during 24 weeks of etanercept treatment and for the same period of infliximab treatment before infliximab was stopped. Disease Activity Score computed on 44 joints (DAS-44), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) 1st hour, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of pain, Health Assessm…

FRI0030 Anti-TNF-α Antibody Targeted To Inflamed Synovial Tissue for The Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

2016

Background TNF-α neutralizing molecules represent one of the most efficient therapeutic approaches to control inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The widespread distribution in the body induces the inhibition of TNF-α in all the tissues, requesting the use of high dose of this expensive drug. Another problem that has not yet been solved in the management of RA patients is how to reduce and possibly avoid the side effects, particularly the increased risk of common and opportunistic infections, which may be associated with long-term administration of these therapeutic drugs. Objectives The aim of the present investigation was to show that a recombinant protein obtained by fusing a syno…

Long-term safety of nine systemic medications for psoriasis: A cohort study using the Spanish Registry of Adverse Events for Biological Therapy in De…

2020

Background: Registry studies broadly describing the safety of systemic drugs in psoriasis are needed. Objective: To describe the safety findings of the systemic drugs acitretin, adalimumab, apremilast, cyclosporine, etanercept, infliximab, methotrexate, secukinumab, and ustekinumab used for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis in patients included in the Spanish Registry of Adverse Events for Biological Therapy in Dermatological Diseases (BIOBADADERM) Registry. Methods: The incidence rate ratio (IRR) and adjusted IRR (including propensity scores) of identified adverse events for each drug, using methotrexate as reference, were determined by means of a prospective cohort. Results: O…

Safety and potential interaction of immunosuppressive drugs for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease in elderly patients

2021

Inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic diseases associated with increased morbidity and reduced quality of life. Age may represent a risk factor for adverse events, due to the multimorbidity and polypharmacy, common in elderly patients. Elderly are often not included in clinical trials evaluating efficacy and safety of study drugs for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases. Several drugs, such as aminosalicylates, systemic corticosteroids, immunosuppressant drugs, biological drugs and Janus Kinase inhibitors, are available for the management of inflammatory bowel diseases. With the increasing spectrum of therapeutic options, it is th…
