Molecular Mechanisms Controlling the Self-Assembly Process of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

1998

The distance dependent interaction between polyelectrolyte-covered mica surfaces in aqueous solution was investigated with the surface forces apparatus. We find the following:  (i) The surface charge changes sign, when an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte from a concentrated polyelectrolyte solution is adsorbed. (ii) Tails and loops of the adsorbed polyions dangle into the bulk phase, inducing a small steric force. If polycations and poyanions are adsorbed on top of each other, a strong short range attractive force is seen due to ion-pair formation after crossing a large repulsive electrostatic/steric barrier. (iii) Obviously, after polyelectrolyte adsorption, there are still nonoccupied b…

A Self-Sorting Scheme Based on Tetra-Urea Calix[4]arenes

2009

Size and shape do matter: When dimerized in nonpolar solvents, an equimolar mixture of eleven tetra-urea calix[4]arenes with different wide-rim substituents self-sorts into only six out of 35 different homo- and heterodimers (see picture). Since the calixarene scaffold and the four urea units are the same in all cases, the self-sorting process is driven only by the cooperative action of steric requirements and stoichiometry.

Steric Constraints Induced Frustrated Growth of Supramolecular Nanorods in Water.

2015

A unique example of supramolecular polymerisation in water based on monomers with nanomolar affinities, which yield rod-like materials with extraordinarily high thermodynamic stability, yet of finite length, is reported. A small library of charge-neutral dendritic peptide amphiphiles was prepared, with a branched nonaphenylalanine-based core that was conjugated to hydrophilic dendrons of variable steric demand. Below a critical size of the dendron, the monomers assemble into nanorod-like polymers, whereas for larger dendritic side chains frustrated growth into near isotropic particles is observed. The supramolecular morphologies observed by electron microscopy, X-ray scattering and diffusio…

Molecular association of small amphiphiles: Origin of ionic liquid properties in dibutyl phosphate/propylamine binary mixtures

2018

Abstract Binary mixtures of liquid surfactants, owing to the amphiphilic nature of the molecules involved, can exhibit nano-segregation and peculiar transport properties. The amphiphilicity, and consequently the resulting self-assembly, can be tuned by changing the length of the alkyl chains and the nature of the polar head group. So, in the present study, the structural and dynamic properties of dibutyl phosphate/propylamine liquid mixtures at various compositions have been investigated by Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), FT-IR, rheometry and dielectric spectroscopy in order to study the intermolecular association taking place when alkylphosphates and alkylamines with a small apolar par…

Surface functionalization and surface recognition: Plasmon optical detection of molecular recognition at self assembled monolayers

1991

The synthesis of biotin- functionalized organic mercaptans and their chemisorption on gold surfaces is described. Biotin bound covalently to self assembled monolayers is recognized by streptavidin from aqueous buffer solutions. Spacer length and packing density of the biotin labels on the organic surface determine the docking kinetics. With a flexible and hydrophilic spacer very fast -diffusion controlled-docking is observed. As an alternative method of self assembly the spreading of organic mercaptans on water surfaces is established. Pressure-area diagrams of different functionalized mercaptans and disulfides are shown and their monolayer properties are discussed.

Functionalized lipid tubules as tools for helical crystallization of proteins

1997

The development of functional supramolecular devices built by self-assembly of elementary molecules and with bioactive properties arouses considerable interest in the field of nanotechnology and new materials. We report here the formation of a new class of lipid tubules exhibiting both properties of molecular recognition and crystal formation for the protein streptavidin. These lipid tubules, made of biotin-containing dioctadecylamine molecules, are straight hollow cylinders with a constant diameter of 27 nm and variable length up to several micrometers. They are unilamellar with an inner diameter of about 16 nm, as shown by cryoelectron microscopy. Streptavidin binds to the biotinylated tu…

Crystallization of SrCO3 on a self-assembled monolayer substrate: an in-situ synchrotron X-ray study

2001

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols on gold surfaces show great promise in controlling the nucleation and growth of inorganic minerals from solution. In doing so, they mimic the role of some biogenic macromolecules in natural biomineralisation processes. Crystallization on SAM surfaces is usually monitored ex-situ; by allowing the process to commence and to evolve for some time, removing the substrate from the mother solution, and then examining it using microscopy, diffraction etc. We present here for the first time, the use of high energy monochromatic synchrotron X-radiation in conjunction with a two dimensional detector to monitor in situ, in a time resolved fashion, the gr…

Templated Crystallisation of Calcium and Strontium Carbonates on Centred Rectangular Self-Assembled Monolayer Substrates

1998

SrCO3crystals display patterns of templating when grown on tailored self-assembled monolayers (right). As SrCO3 is isostructural with aragonite, comparison of the crystallisation of SrCO3 in the aragonite/strontianite modification with the crystallisation of CaCO3 in all three modifications might yield some insights into which factors are important for crystal growth.

Thermomechanical analysis supporting the preliminary engineering design of DONES target assembly

2018

Abstract The design of the Demo Oriented NEutron Source (DONES) is the main objective of the Work Package Early Neutron Source (WPENS) of EUROfusion Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPPT) programme. DONES is an IFMIF-based neutron source with the goal of testing and qualifying candidate materials to be used in DEMO and future fusion power plants. In the framework of these activities, a research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA labs, in order to assess the thermomechanical performances of the DONES target system, endowed with an integrated Target Assembly (TA) when it undergoes the thermomechanical loads typical of its nominal oper…
