Clinical implications of serum neurofilament in newly diagnosed MS patients: a longitudinal multicentre cohort study

2020

Abstract Background We aim to evaluate serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL), indicating neuroaxonal damage, as a biomarker at diagnosis in a large cohort of early multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Methods In a multicentre prospective longitudinal observational cohort, patients with newly diagnosed relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) or clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) were recruited between August 2010 and November 2015 in 22 centers. Clinical parameters, MRI, and sNfL levels (measured by single molecule array) were assessed at baseline and up to four-year follow-up. Findings Of 814 patients, 54.7% (445) were diagnosed with RRMS and 45.3% (369) with CIS when applying 2010 McDonald criteria (R…

Using AHP methodology for prioritizing the actions in the transport sector in the frame of SECAPs

2020

The drafting of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan, required for the local authorities joining the Covenant of Mayors initiative, is an opportunity to plan actions reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector. Choosing the measures to implement requires the application of a methodology that compares them, considering costs and impacts in terms of energy consumption, emissions reduction, and social benefits. The paper aims to develop a method based on the typical approach of the Analytical Hierarchy Process, supporting decisions in the transport sector in the frame of the drafting of SECAP. The method allows determining the priority actions and the optimal allocation…

Atlantin ylityksiä : amerikkalaisen kirjallisuuden- ja kulttuurintutkimuksen navigointia 1965-1995

2011

Teoriat muuttuvat paitsi aikaa myös paikkaa myöten. Kirjassa tutkitaan eurooppalaisen, varsinkin ranskalaisen teorian Atlantin ylityksiä. Millaisiksi eräät keskeiset teoriaotteet muotoutuivat yhdysvaltalaisessa yliopistomaailmassa ja kohdatessaan uudet poliittiset ja kulttuuriset haasteet? Tämän muotoutumisen vaikutukset näkyvät vuorostaan muualla. Ajanjakso on 1965–1995. "Korkean teorian" nousu liittyi kielelliseen käänteeseen ja perustojen horjumiseen, ja sen erilaisten muotojen ja myös vastustamisen tarkastelu ulottuu kielen merkityksiä hajottavasta retorisuudesta valtarakenteiden marxilaiseen analyysiin, afrikkalaisamerikkalaiseen feminismiin ja "orientalismin" symboliseen tuottamiseen …

Cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis can be predicted by imaging early in the disease.

2008

Background: Cognitive impairment is common in multiple sclerosis (MS) and adds significantly to the burden of the disease. The ability to predict future cognitive impairment from imaging obtained at disease onset has not been investigated. Methods: 62 patients imaged within 3 months of a clinically isolated syndrome were assessed neuropsychologically 7 years later. Baseline and periodic MRI measures of lesions, atrophy and normal-appearing white and grey matter were regressed against neuropsychological scores to explore the best predictors of cognitive outcome. Results: 28 patients had developed clinically definite MS at follow-up and a further nine met revised McDonald criteria for MS. Def…

The impact of isolated lesions on white-matter fiber tracts in multiple sclerosis patients

2015

Infratentorial lesions have been assigned an equivalent weighting to supratentorial plaques in the new McDonald criteria for diagnosing multiple sclerosis. Moreover, their presence has been shown to have prognostic value for disability. However, their spatial distribution and impact on network damage is not well understood. As a preliminary step in this study, we mapped the overall infratentorial lesion pattern in relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis patients (N = 317) using MRI, finding the pons (lesion density, 14.25/cm3) and peduncles (13.38/cm3) to be predilection sites for infratentorial lesions. Based on these results, 118 fiber bundles from 15 healthy controls and a subgroup of 23 …

Development of artificial neural network for condition assessment of bridges based on hybrid decision making method – Feasibility study

2021

Abstract Managing a bridge at an appropriate level of reliability requires knowledge of its technical condition, which is decisive in terms of maintenance and repair activities. This is a multi-criteria decision-making problem which results from the need to allocate limited financial resources to this work. Although many calculation models have been suggested in published sources, none of them has ever met these requirements. The algorithm presented by the authors allows for the assessment of any number of bridges, taking into account the diversity of solutions in terms of materials and structures, and can provide a solution to this problem. This hybrid calculation model, combining the modi…

Human Factor Interrelationships to Improve Worker Reliability: Implementation of MCDM in the Agri-Food Sector

2023

Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs) are contextual, individual, and cognitive factors used in Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) to quantify the worker contribution to errors when performing a generic task. Although the empirical evidence demonstrates the existence of PSF interrelationships, the majority of HRA methods assume their independence. As a consequence, the resulting Human Error Probability (HEP) might be over- or underestimated. To deal with this issue, only a few qualitative guidelines or statistical-based approaches have been proposed so far. While the former are not well structured, the latter require a high computational effort and a proper number of input data. Therefore, the p…

Ranking of occupational health and safety risks by a multi-criteria perspective: Inclusion of human factors and application of VIKOR

2021

Nowadays, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is more and more recognized as a crucial process to be properly managed and continuously improved by every organization. Primarily addressed to prevent workers’ injuries and diseases, it positively impacts on productivity, competitiveness and reputation as well as it con-tributes to cost savings in general. OHS management is grounded upon the risk assessment results, on the basis of which defining corrective measures to be taken to reduce risks to acceptable values. In this regard, the paper proposes a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) based methodology addressed to the occupational risks prioritization. In order to overcome the shortco…

A HOLISTIC MULTI-METHODOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE RENOVATION

2019

A review of the barriers for building renovation has revealed a lack of methodologies, which can promote sustainability objectives and assist various stakeholders during the design stage of building renovation/retrofitting projects. The purpose of this paper is to develop a Holistic Multi-methodology for Sustainable Renovation, which aims to deal with complexity of renovation projects. It provides a framework through which to involve the different stakeholders in the design process to improve group learning and group decision-making, and hence make the building renovation design process more robust and efficient. Therefore, the paper discusses the essence of multifaceted barriers in buildin…

Survey of methods to visualize alternatives in multiple criteria decision making problems

2012

When solving decision problems where multiple conflicting criteria are to be considered simultaneously, decision makers must compare several different alternatives and select the most preferred one. The task of comparing multidimensional vectors is very demanding for the decision maker without any support. Different graphical visualization tools can be used to support and help the decision maker in understanding similarities and differences between the alternatives and graphical illustration is a very important part of decision support systems that are used in solving multiple criteria decision making problems. The visualization task is by no means trivial because, on the one hand, the grap…
