NEW GRAFT COPOLYMERS OF HYALURONIC ACID AND POLYLACTIC ACID: SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION

2006

Abstract New graft copolymers have been synthesized, using hyaluronic acid (HA) as a hydrophilic backbone and polylactic acid (PLA) as an aliphatic polyester in order to obtain new polymeric derivatives of HA able to hydrophobically associate in an aqueous medium. Hyaluronic acid with low molecular weight was made soluble in organic solvent by transformation to its tetrabutylammonium (TBA) salt. Using the HA–TBA derivative, the reaction was performed in dimethylsulfoxide adding as a reagent the N -hydroxysuccinimide derivative of PLA. Two HA–PLA graft copolymers have been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The interaction between …

Padure (Beltes) piliakalnio (Latvija) osteologinė medžiaga: rūšių pasiskirstymas ir skerdimo technologija

2013

In the excavated Padure (Beltes) hill-fort in Latvia, cultural layers from the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age (Stage 1), and the Middle Iron Age and the Late Iron Age (Stage 2), were detected, which, besides the archaeological material typical of that period, provided abundant zooarchaeological material. This article presents the investigation data from the zooarchaeological material of both stages: the data relate to the butchering techniques used, and the identification of the composition of the faunal species. The investigation was carried out in the bioarchaeological laboratory of the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology at Klaipėda University. As is proven by the …

Chemical and Microbiological Characterization for PDO Labelling of Typical East Piedmont (Italy) Salami

2015

This study is focused on the characterisation of typical salami produced in Alessandria province (North West of Italy). Seventeen small or medium salami producers from this area were involved in the study and provided the samples investigated. The aim is double and consists in obtaining a screening of the characteristics of different products and following their evolution along ripening. The study involved five types of typical salami that were characterised for aroma components and nutritional features. This approach could provide a basis for a possible PDO or PGI label request. Principal Component Analysis and cluster analysis were used as multivariate statistical tools for data treatment…

The shaping of public economic discourse in postwar America: the 1947 meat shortage and Franco Modigliani's meat plan

2015

This paper discusses the American debate over price controls and economic stabilization after World War II, when the transition from a war economy to a peace economy was characterized by bottlenecks in the productive system and shortages of food and other basic consumer goods, directly affecting the living standard of the population, the public opinion, and political discourse. Specifically, we will focus on the economist Franco Modigliani and his proposal for a "Plan to meet the problem of rising meat and other food prices without bureaucratic controls." The plan prepared by Modigliani in October 1947 was based on a system of taxes and subsidies to foster a proper distribution of disposabl…

The marbled crayfish as a paradigm for saltational speciation by autopolyploidy and parthenogenesis in animals

2015

ABSTRACT The parthenogenetic all-female marbled crayfish is a novel research model and potent invader of freshwater ecosystems. It is a triploid descendant of the sexually reproducing slough crayfish, Procambarus fallax, but its taxonomic status has remained unsettled. By cross-breeding experiments and parentage analysis we show here that marbled crayfish and P. fallax are reproductively separated. Both crayfish copulate readily, suggesting that the reproductive barrier is set at the cytogenetic rather than the behavioural level. Analysis of complete mitochondrial genomes of marbled crayfish from laboratory lineages and wild populations demonstrates genetic identity and indicates a single o…

Mucoadhesive Polymeric Films to Enhance Barbaloin Penetration Into Buccal Mucosa: a Novel Approach to Chemoprevention.

2018

Nowadays, chemoprevention by administering natural supplements is considered an attractive strategy to reverse, suppress, or prevent the evolution of premalignant oral lesions. In particular, Barbaloin exhibits anti-proliferative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties, and it results useful in multi-therapy with classic chemotherapeutics. Therefore, in this work, mucoadhesive buccal films, as locoregional drug delivery system able to provide a targeted and efficient therapeutic delivery of Barbaloin, are proposed. Thus, Aloin extract-loaded Eudragit (R) RL100 or Eudragit (R) RS100-based buccal films were designed in order to obtain an easily self-administrable formulation capable of…

Thermodynamics of a polymer blend solution system studied by gel permeation chromatography and viscosity

1999

Binary and ternary interaction parameters and their derivatives have been calculated with the Flory-Huggins formalism developed for a ternary polymer system. The equilibrium compositions of the ternary system tetrahydrofuran/polybutadiene/polystyrene that forms two phases in equilibrium at 25°C have been used to solve the binodal equations. With this set of parameters, the viscosimetric interaction parameters have been computed. For the sake of comparison, the experimental viscosimetric parameter has been determined from intrinsic viscosity data of a polymer (3) in a "binary solvent" (solvent + polymer (2)). It has been clearly shown that composition-dependent parameters are necessary to re…

Controlled iontophoretic release of glucocorticoids through epithelial cell monolayers

1998

In the present study the iontophoretic transdermal delivery of three different glucocorticoids through a confluent monolayer of MDCK cells, mimicking biological barriers, was studied. For this experiment an in vitro model with platinum electrodes for iontophoresis and MDCK cells was developed. With this model investigations concerning the biocompatibility of the cells depending on different current densities and the iontophoretic permeation of the three glucocorticoids through the cell monolayer were carried out. The permeation behavior of this living biological barrier should be very similar to the non-living barrier, human stratum corneum. Different current densities (12.74-38.22 microA/c…

Determination of biogenic amines in meat by combined ion-exchange capillary gas chromatography

1984

Abstract A procedure is described for the determination of putrescine, cadaverine and histamine in meat. Crude perchloric acid extracts were pre-separated on a weakly acidic cation exchanger and the amines quantified by capillary gas chromatography. The diamines were analysed as trifluoroacetyl derivatives and histamine was converted into N α -trifluoroacetyl-N τ -ethoxycarbonylhistamine. The accuracy of the determination of diamines was examined by a precipitation pre-separation method and by mass fragmentometric quantification. The proposed procedure allows the sensitive, sufficiently precise and highly specific determination of putrescine and cadaverine in meat.

Relevant associations of the glucokinase regulatory protein/glucokinase gene variation with TAG concentrations in a high-cardiovascular risk populati…

2012

The SNP rs1260326 (P446L) and rs1799884 ( − 30G>A) for the glucokinase regulatory protein (GCKR) and glucokinase (GCK) genes, respectively, have been associated with opposing effects on TAG and glucose concentrations. However, their genetic modulation by diet (dietary patterns or foods) remains to be investigated. We studied 945 high-cardiovascular risk subjects aged 67 (sd 6) years who participated in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea-Valencia Study. Demographic, clinical, biochemical and genetic data were obtained. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and food intake were measured by validated questionnaires. Carriers of the L allele of GKCR had significantly higher TAG concent…
