Il Mare di mezzo: storie di naviganti, di lotta per il diritto e di luci nel buio della frontiera

2022

This paper analyses the way in which, and the reasons why, the Mediterranean Sea, from being a limes between lands, has become the frontier we know today: the space of an emblematic struggle for law and rights, which contrasts the policies of governments with the forced movements of people in migration and with civil society organizations that try to promote and protect fundamental rights. In this context, the direct experience of some search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean Sea has been used to highlight the extent of this conflict with respect to the violation of the national and domestic legal frameworks carried out by the European states, Italy in the lead, also through the invo…

Emergenza sanitaria, (in)sicurezza e interventi normativi in materia di immigrazione in Italia

2020

The recent legislative measures and practices introduced in Italy in the filed of migration have highlighted many of the juridical problems that the current sanitary crisis is posing, especially with regard to the relationship between state of emergency and constitutional rights, also with regard to the State's obligations under international law. After briefly highliting the danger in opposing individual rights and undetermined political purposes, this contribution underlines the lack of reasonableness and consistency of these interventions. Particular attention is paid to the Decree 7 April, 2020, n. 150, which states that Italian ports, in time of pandemic, cannot be considered safe port…

Pincìpi e naufragi: alcune critiche alla nuova filosofia per il diritto internazionale di Ronald Dworkin e il caso emblematico delle politiche in att…

2022

This contribution critically analyzes Ronald Dworkin's New Philosophy for International Law, by underlying how, his theory of law as interpretation, if transposed to the level of the relations between states, more clearly shows some weaknesses which are mainly connected with the ideality of its fundamental assumptions. After having introduced the fundamental aspects of Dworkin's reflection on international law, the specific contents of the particular principles - of mitigation and salience - that Dworkin places at the basis of his vision of international law are critically analyzed in the face of the prerogatives of contemporary national sovereignty and in relation to the structural limits …

Hydrologic and geochemical survey of the lake ‘‘Specchio di Venere’’ (Pantelleria island, Southern Italy)

2007

Hydrological and geochemical studies performed on Lake Specchio di Venere on Pantelleria island (Italy) indicate that this endorheic basin has been formed through upwelling of the water table, and that it is continuously fed by the thermal springs situated on its shores. The lake is periodically stratified both thermally and in salinity, albeit this stratification is rather unstable over time, since meteorological events such as strong rain or wind can determine the mixing of its waters. Periodical analyses of the lake water chemistry show large variations of the salt content due to the yearly evaporation-rain dilution cycle. These processes are also responsible for the saline stratificatio…

Recent benthic foraminiferal assemblages and their relationship to environmental variables on the shoreface and inner shelf off Valencia (Western Med…

2014

The environmental variables that determine the distributions of benthic foraminiferal assemblages on the shoreface and inner shelf of the north of Valencia province (Western Mediterranean) are identified. The possible influence of variables such as water depth, distance from shore, hydrodynamics, substrate type, carbonate content, organic matter content and human activity is evaluated. Multivariate cluster-Q-type analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) are used to identify the environmental variables that have the greatest influence on the assemblage distribution. The spatial distribution of the assemblages is closely associated with water depth and substrate. The diversity and abundance of …

Vertical distribution of two sympatric labrid fishes in the Western Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic rocky subtidal: local shore topography does ma…

2011

Changes in the shore topography (e.g. slope) occur at a scale of hundreds of meters in several locations in the Lusitanian and the Mediterranean Sea provinces. We tested whether differences in the bottom inclination might affect the vertical distribution patterns of two sympatric coastal labrid fishes, the rainbow wrasse Coris julis and the ornate wrasse Thalassoma pavo. Visual censuses were used to determine the distribution and abundance of these labrid species in high (‡30 ) and low (£3 ) slope rocky substrates covered by brown macroalgae and at two different depths (shallow, 4‐7 m, and deep 14‐20 m). Pectoral fin aspect ratio was used as an estimate of swimming performance to potentia…

Surface sediment dynamics along the Tunisian coast at Skhira (Gulf of Gabès, south-eastern Tunisia)

2015

Abstract An investigation was conducted in the summer of 2012 at 24 study stations along the Tunisian coast near Skhira (south-eastern Mediterranean Sea) through high resolution of analyses, grain size and mineral composition of surface sediment. An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler showed Skhira's main coastal current to follow a direction 60°E, with its main axis south-west/north-east parallel to the coastline and its minor axis east-west. Current speeds were approximately 13 cm s−1 and 4.5 cm s−1 for the major and minor axes, respectively. Parallel to the coast, currents were generally mild to moderate, but often exceeded 20 cm s−1. An Argonaut meter recorded the dominant current directi…

Biochemical Responses of European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) to the Stress Induced by Off Shore Experimental Seismic Prospecting

1999

The paper reports the results of an experimental seismic survey in the open sea by an air gun, carried out to evaluate the effects of air gun acoustic waves on marine animals. Air gun blast exposition was found to have a marked influence on confined Dicentrarchus labrax. Our data, in fact, demonstrated a biochemical response to acoustic stress induced by air gun blasts. Variations of cortisol, glucose, lactate, AMP, ADP, ATP and cAMP in different tissues of D. labrax, indicate that fish have a typical primary and secondary stress response after air gun detonations. Radiography indicates that air gun blasts do not induce any macroscopic effect on skeletal apparatus. The variations of biochem…

Uncertainties in shoreline position analysis: the role of run-up and tide in a gentle slope beach

2017

Abstract. In recent decades in the Mediterranean Sea, high anthropic pressure from increasing economic and touristic development has affected several coastal areas. Today the erosion phenomena threaten human activities and existing structures, and interdisciplinary studies are needed to better understand actual coastal dynamics. Beach evolution analysis can be conducted using GIS methodologies, such as the well-known Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), in which error assessment based on shoreline positioning plays a significant role. In this study, a new approach is proposed to estimate the positioning errors due to tide and wave run-up influence. To improve the assessment of the wave…

New Energy Corridors in the Euro-Mediterranean Area: The Pivotal Role of Sicily

2018

The present paper deals with the new opportunities deriving from the interconnections of the European and North African transmission systems. In order to achieve a single international market for electricity exchanges, interconnections between networks in different countries are becoming increasingly important and Sicily, for its geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, will undoubtedly play an important role as an electrical bridge between Europe and the North Africa in the near future. The paper, presenting the actual electro-energetic context of Tunisia, reports the new important interconnection already realized in South Italy (in particular in Sicily) and describe t…
