Correction: Widespread white matter microstructural abnormalities in bipolar disorder: evidence from mega- and meta-analyses across 3033 individuals
2019
Fronto-limbic white matter (WM) abnormalities are assumed to lie at the heart of the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD); however, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have reported heterogeneous results and it is not clear how the clinical heterogeneity is related to the observed differences. This study aimed to identify WM abnormalities that differentiate patients with BD from healthy controls (HC) in the largest DTI dataset of patients with BD to date, collected via the ENIGMA network. We gathered individual tensor-derived regional metrics from 26 cohorts leading to a sample size of N = 3033 (1482 BD and 1551 HC). Mean fractional anisotropy (FA) from 43 regions of interest (ROI) a…
Effect of partially modified retro-inverso analogues derived from C-reactive protein on the induction of nitric oxide synthesis in peritoneal macroph…
1997
The ability of three modified tetrapeptides, representing fragments of the C-reactive protein (CRP) sequence and stabilized in the first peptide bond by retro-inverso modification, to affect the secretion of nitric oxide (NO) was studied in macrophages of BALB/c mice. These tetrapeptides, resembling the aminoacid sequence of tuftsin (CRP I, H-gThr-(R,S)mLys-Pro-Leu-OH, ITF 1192; CRP II, H-gGly-(R, S)mLys-Pro-Arg-OH, ITF 1127; CRP III, H-gThr-(R,S)mLys-Pro-Gln-OH, ITF 1193), were able to induce NO synthesis by peritoneal macrophages in a dose-dependent manner; the most stimulating dose was 1000 ng ml−1 for CRP II and 100 ng ml−1 for CRP I and CRP III. NO synthesis was not strictly dependent …
Eight-week consumption of milk enriched with omega 3 fatty acids raises their blood concentrations yet does not affect lipids and cardiovascular dise…
2014
Adequate concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids (FA) may be maintained by consuming foods naturally rich in or functional foods enriched with those essential FA. We assessed the effects of an 8-week consumption of milk enriched with 400. mg of omega 3 FA on blood lipid levels and selected cardiovascular risk factors in adult healthy volunteers. Participants (n= 157) were randomized to consume - for eight weeks - either 500. mL/day of 1% fat milk providing 150. mg of eicosapentaenoic (EPA), 150. mg of docosahexaenoic (DHA), and 100. mg of α-linolenic (ALA) acids or 500. mL/day of non-enriched 1% fat milk. At week 8, we observed significant increments of blood EPA and DHA in the intervention g…
Essential Oils of Chiliadenus Lopadusanus (Asteraceae)
2013
The essential oils from the leaves and flowers of Chiliadenus lopadusanus growing on Lampedusa Island were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-MS. The major component was camphor (39.4% in the leaves and 24.0% in the flowers), followed in the leaves by torreyol (6.7%), t-cadinol (5.2%) and 1,8-cineole (3.8%), while in the flowers by t-cadinol (15.2%), t-muurolol (5.1%) and torreyol (4.5%). Among the compounds identified, several seem to play a role in antibacterial, antifungal, allelopathic and spasmolytic activity. In addition, several compounds identified in this study seem to influence the attraction of Megachile ( Eutricharaea) apicalis (Megachilidae) and Halictus ( Selado…
A3- and A2B-fluorocorroles: synthesis, X-ray characterization and antiviral activity evaluation against human cytomegalovirus infection
2020
Twenty-nine fluorinated corroles were prepared, spectroscopically characterized, and studied for their antiviral activity against human cytomegalovirus infection. Six corroles were also fully characterized by X-ray crystallography giving insights on their geometrical features. The halogenated corroles reported herein exhibit significantly improved antiviral activity over their non-halogenated counterparts and over nitro-corrole analogs previously reported. Full activity of thirteen A3-corroles is achieved with four fluorine atoms present on the meso-phenyl ring reaching a selectivity index above 300. The maximum activity is achieved for A2B-corroles with selectivity indexes above 400. We th…
A3- and A2B-nitrocorroles: synthesis and antiviral activity evaluation against human cytomegalovirus infection
2020
Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) is responsible for several pathologies impacting immunocompromised patients and can trigger life-threatening infection. Several antivirals are available and are used in the clinic, but hCMV resistant strains have appeared and patients have encountered therapeutic failure. Hence, there is a constant need for new best in class or first in class antiviral molecules. We have previously shown that nitrocorroles could be used as a potent anti-hCMV agent without acute toxicity in mice. They therefore represent an excellent platform to perform structure–activity relationship (SAR) studies and to increase efficiency or reduce toxicity. We have generated original A2B- and…

Control of oxidative metabolism in volume-overloaded rat hearts: effects of different lipid substrates.
1994
The relationship between intracellular energy parameters and myocardial O2 consumption (VO2) was studied in control and volume-overloaded hearts perfused with different lipid substrates and over a range of left ventricular work loads. In control hearts, a unique linear relationship between log of cytosolic [ATP]/[ADPf].[Pi] (where [ADPf] is concentration of free ADP) and myocardial VO2 was observed between low and high work loads for both fatty acids studied. In volume-overloaded hearts perfused in the presence of exogenous palmitate, the slope of the relationship between log [ATP]/[ADPf].[Pi] and myocardial VO2 was considerably depressed. It would seem that, under these conditions, much o…
Megakaryocytic features useful for the diagnosis of myeloproliferative disorders can be obtained by a novel unsupervised software analysis
2006
An unsupervised method for megakaryocyte detection and analysis is proposed, in order to validate supplementary tools which can be of help in supporting the pathologist in the classification of Philadelphia negative chronic myeloproliferative disorders with thrombocytosis. The experiment was conducted on high power magnification photomicrographs taken from hematoxylin-and-eosin 3 µm thick sections of formalin fixed, paraffin embedded bone marrow biopsies from patients with reactive thrombocytosis or chronic myeloproliferative disorders. Each megakaryocyte has been isolated in the photos through an image segmentation process, mainly based on mathematical morphology and wavelet analysis. A se…
Progress in the characterization of insulin-like peptides in aphids: Immunohistochemical mapping of ILP4.
2021
Aphids were the first animals described as photoperiodic due to their seasonal switch from viviparous parthenogenesis to sexual reproduction (cyclical parthenogenesis) caused by the shortening of the photoperiod in autumn. This switch produces a single sexual generation of oviparous females and males that mate and lay diapausing cold-resistant eggs that can overcome the unfavourable environmental conditions typical of winter in temperate regions. Previous studies have hinted at a possible implication of two insulin-like peptides (ILP1 and ILP4) in the aphid seasonal response, changing their expression levels between different photoperiodic conditions. Moreover, in situ localization of their…
