In primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), incubation with phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) enhanced basal and bradykinin-stimulated nitric oxide production. In the HUVEC-derived cell line EA.hy 926, PMA and phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate stimulated endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS III) mRNA expression in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Maximal mRNA expression (3.3-fold increase) was observed after 18 hr. NOS III protein and activity were increased to a similar extent. Nerve agent simulant detection by using chromogenic triaryl methane cation probes

Two triaryl methane cations have been used as probes for colorimetric detection of nerve agent simulants. Buffered mixed aqueous solutions of 1 and 2 showed bathochromic shifts in the presence of DCNP (diethylcyanophosphonate) and DCP (diethylchlorophosphate). The colour modulation can be observed to the naked eye. Appropriate mechanisms for the recognition event are proposed. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

We characterised materials accumulating in two failed mesophilic semi-continuous anaerobic digesters treating poultry slaughterhouse waste and, for reference, materials in the two well-performing digesters, to find the anaerobic degradability of these materials and the factors affecting their degradation. We also studied materials accumulating and stratifying in various layers in one of the two well-performing digesters. Abstract The study determined the organic silicon compounds in biogases from landfills, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and biogas plants processing different organic material. The aim was to provide information for gas utilisation applications, as siloxanes are reported to shorten the life time of engines when biogas is used for energy production. In total, 48 samples were measured. The goal of this work was to evaluate the effect of vineyard position on the minerality of wines and to establish relationships between minerality scores, sensory descriptors and chemical composition. Sensory analyses included minerality rating and free description performed by wine professionals under two conditions: orthonasal olfaction alone and global tasting. ABSTRACT Methanoculleus bourgensis , of the order Methanomicrobiales , is a dominant methanogenic archaeon in many biogas-producing reactor systems fed with renewable primary products. It is capable of synthesizing methane via the hydrogenotrophic pathway utilizing hydrogen and carbon dioxide or formate as the substrates. Here we report the complete and finished genome sequence of M. bourgensis strain MS2 T , isolated from a sewage sludge digester.
Quantitative determination of sotolon in wines by high-performance liquid chromatography

Sotolon (4,5-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone) is a key flavour compound in the french flor-sherry “Vin jaune”. This compound was determined quantitatively by extraction of 25 ml of wine on a XAD-4 resin, elution with diethyl ether, separation by HPLC on a Lichrospher 100 Diol column, elution with dichloromethane/hexane (60/40) and UV detection at 232 nm. The amount of sotolon in “Vin jaune” (120 to 268 μg/l) was related to the development of the yeast film over a period of 6 years.
