Abstract. Activated chlorine compounds in the polar winter stratosphere drive catalytic cycles that deplete ozone and methane, whose abundances are highly relevant to the evolution of global climate. The present work introduces a novel dataset of in situ measurements of relevant chlorine species in the lowermost Arctic stratosphere from the aircraft mission POLSTRACC–GW-LCYCLE–SALSA during winter 2015/2016. The major stages of chemical evolution of the lower polar vortex are presented in a consistent series of high-resolution mass spectrometric observations of HCl and ClONO2. Simultaneous measurements of CFC-12 are used to derive total inorganic chlorine (Cly) and active chlorine (ClOx). Th…

Emission of iodine-containing volatiles by selected microalgae species

2014

In this study we present the results of an emission study of different phytoplankton samples in aqueous media treated with elevated ozone levels. Halocarbon measurements show that the samples tested released bromoform and different iodocarbons, including iodomethane, iodochloromethane and diiodomethane. Iodide and iodate levels in the liquid phase were representative of concentrations of surface water in a natural environment. Measurement of volatile iodine (I2) emissions from two diatom samples (Mediopyxis helysia and Porosira glacialis) and the background sample (F/2 medium from filtered natural seawater) showed that the quantity of evolved I2 depends on the ozone concentration in the air…

Measurement report: Photochemical production and loss rates of formaldehyde and ozone across Europe

2021

Various atmospheric sources and sinks regulate the abundance of tropospheric formaldehyde (HCHO), which is an important trace gas impacting the HOx (≡ HO2 + OH) budget and the concentration of ozone (O3). In this study, we present the formation and destruction terms of ambient HCHO and O3 calculated from in situ observations of various atmospheric trace gases measured at three different sites across Europe during summertime. These include a coastal site in Cyprus, in the scope of the Cyprus Photochemistry Experiment (CYPHEX) in 2014, a mountain site in southern Germany, as part of the Hohenpeißenberg Photochemistry Experiment (HOPE) in 2012, and a forested site in Finland, where measurement…

Geogenic and atmospheric sources for volatile organic compounds in fumarolic emissions from Mt. Etna and Vulcano Island (Sicily, Italy)

2012

[1] In this paper, fluid source(s) and processes controlling the chemical composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gas discharges from Mt. Etna and Vulcano Island (Sicily, Italy) were investigated. The main composition of the Etnean and Volcano gas emissions is produced by mixing, to various degrees, of magmatic and hydrothermal components. VOCs are dominated by alkanes, alkenes and aromatics, with minor, though significant, concentrations of O-, S- and Cl(F)-substituted compounds. The main mechanism for the production of alkanes is likely related to pyrolysis of organic-matter-bearing sediments that interact with the ascending magmatic fluids. Alkanes are then converted to alken…

A predictive model for salt nanoparticle formation using heterodimer stability calculations

2021

Acid–base clusters and stable salt formation are critical drivers of new particle formation events in the atmosphere. In this study, we explore salt heterodimer (a cluster of one acid and one base) stability as a function of gas-phase acidity, aqueous-phase acidity, heterodimer proton transference, vapor pressure, dipole moment and polarizability for salts comprised of sulfuric acid, methanesulfonic acid and nitric acid with nine bases. The best predictor of heterodimer stability was found to be gas-phase acidity. We then analyzed the relationship between heterodimer stability and J4×4, the theoretically predicted formation rate of a four-acid, four-base cluster, for sulfuric acid salts ove…

Composite polymer electrolytes with improved lithium metal electrode interfacial properties: II. Application in rechargeable batteries

1998

The application of a liquid-free, ceramic-added composite polymer electrolyte in a Li/LiMn{sub 2}O{sub 4} rechargeable battery is presented and discussed. As expected by the high stability of the electrolyte toward the lithium metal anode, the battery has promising characteristics in terms of reliability and cyclability.

Catalytic activity of a CuGHK peptide-based porous material

2021

The CuGHK peptide-based porous material with a periodic distribution of pockets decorated with lysine side chain active sites was synthesized using a room temperature one-step method and used as a heterogeneous organocatalyst. The pockets are capable of benzaldehyde molecule uptake and show high activity in the Henry reaction with nitromethane. Mechanistic pathways are investigated using an integrative experimental/computational approach.

Über Umsetzungen an Poly-p-lithiumstyrol 2. Mitt. Derivate des poly-p-vinyl-di- und Triphenylmethans

1959

ChemInform Abstract: Enantioselective Synthesis of Herbertane Sesquiterpenes: Synthesis of (-)-α-Formylherbertenol.

2010

Abstract The synthesis of 4-hydroxy-3-[(1 S )-1,2,2-trimethylcyclopentyl]benzaldehyde [(−)-α-formylherbertenol 1 ], a herbertane-type sesquiterpene isolated from the leafy liverwort Herberta adunca , from β-cyclogeraniol is described. The synthesis is based on the previously described preparation of an enantiopure 1,2,2-trimethylcyclopentane synthon from which the characteristic aromatic moiety of 1 is elaborated, using a Robinson annulation and a palladium-catalysed methoxycarbonylation of an aryl triflate as key synthetic steps. The synthesis of the natural sesquiterpene (−)-α-herbertenol, also a natural sequiterpene, using the same methodology is also described.

Chemical and Spectroscopical Properties of Medium Sizedtrans- andcis-Bicyclo[n.1.0]alk-2-ynes

1997

Chemical and spectroscopical properties of cis- and trans-cyclopropano-anellated cycloalkynes of medium ring size are investigated and compared with results from force field calculations. IR and 13C-NMR data of the alkynes reflect the deformation of the triple bond due to ring strain. Parallel to bending the reactivity increases with decreasing ring size, the trans fused alkynes prove to be nearly as reactive as the cis fused with a two carbon smaller ring size. The bicycloalkynes are complexed with silver triflate. 13C NMR reveals that the triple bond as well as the cyclopropane serve as ligands.
