Charge transfer in the novel donor-acceptor complexes tetra- and hexamethoxypyrene with tetracyanoquinodimethane studied by HAXPES

Abstract The effect of charge transfer (CT) in complexes of the donors tetra - and hexamethoxyprene ( TMP and HMP ) with the classical acceptor tetracyanoquinodimethane ( TCNQ ) was studied using hard X-ray photoemission (HAXPES). Microcrystals of the complex were grown via vapour diffusion from donor–acceptor mixtures. The bulk sensitivity of HAXPES at a photon energy of 6 keV completely eliminates the problem of surface contamination for such delicate organic materials grown from solution. The donor molecules were produced using a novel synthesis route functionalizing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at their periphery. Rotation of methyl radicals in molecular solids.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements were carried out to study the rotation of methyl radicals (CH(3)) in solid carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen matrices. The radicals were produced by dissociating methane by plasma bursts generated by a focused 193 nm ArF excimer laser radiation during the gas condensation on the substrate. The ESR spectra exhibit anisotropic features that persist over the temperature range examined, and in most cases this indicates a restriction of rotation about the C(2) symmetry axis. Abstract The reactions of 3-phenyl-3-methylamino-1,2-propanediol 1a and 3-[(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy]-1-methylamino-1-phenyl-2-propanol 1b with (CH2O)n and CH2Cl2 are appropriate procedures for the preparation of 1,3-oxazines or 1,3-oxazolidines under proper selection of kinetic or thermodynamic reaction conditions. The reaction of 1b with (CH2O)n or CH2Cl2, affords the oxazolidine 2b under kinetic conditions and then this compound can be slowly converted into 5-[(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy]-3-methyl-4-phenyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2H-1,3-oxazine 3b under thermodynamic control. Photodecomposition of adsorbed ethanoic acid over silica gel catalyst in a flow system

Abstract The photodecomposition of ethanoic acid adsorbed on silica gels from various sources was studied at wavelengths greater than 300 nm. The experiments were carried out in a flow apparatus. A few photoreactivity tests using acetone or ethanol were also performed. The photodecomposition of ethanoic acid and acetone produced mainly carbon dioxide and methane, in the ratio 2:1, and traces of ethane and methanol. Adsorbed ethanol was not affected at all by the radiation. Infrared and UV-vis reflectance spectra of ethanoic acid adsorbed on silica gels as well as UV-vis reflectance spectra of acetone and ethanol adsorbed on silica gels were recorded. Molybdenum pentachloride combines a strong Lewis acid character with an unusually high oxidation potential creating a powerful reagent for oxidative transformations. Since the oxidative coupling reaction of aryls is induced at an extraordinarily high reaction rate, a variety of labile groups, e.g. iodo, tert-alkyl, etc., are tolerated on the aromatic core. Furthermore, the co-formed molybdenum salts can either be exploited for template effects to obtain uncommon geometries in a preferred manner, or redox-play starts after aqueous workup. Therefore MoCl5 represents a unique and easily available reagent.

Although sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L.) has many interesting features that could support the production of biofuels (e.g., a high yield and soluble sugar content, N-fixation capacity, low input requirements for its cultivation), no study has assessed the possibility of its use for that purpose. Methane production from maize in Finland – Screening for different maize varieties and plant parts

Abstract The objective of the study was to determine how the harvest time and maize variety (12 varieties) affects the methane yield and dry matter yield per hectare in southern Finland (Piikkio) and in Central Finland (Laukaa). The specific methane yields and methane yields per hectare were also determined for different plant parts (stem, leaves and cobs). The methane yield per hectare varied from 2130 to 9170 m 3  ha −1 . The methane yields per hectare were ∼50% lower in Laukaa than in Piikkio due to a shorter growing season and lower total solid (TS) yields. Regulating feeding and increasing methane yield from co-digestion of C5 molasses and cattle manure

Abstract The paper investigated the mesophilic (∼35 °C) and thermophilic (∼50 °C) co-digestion of cattle manure and C5 molasses for a variable organic loading rate (OLR). The small scale continuous reactor experiment revealed that thermophilic treatment yielded a maximum 313 ± 16 L/kg VS methane for the feeding ranged between 50% and 70% C5 (v/v). Mesophilic co-digestion, on the other hand, produced maximum 232 ± 32 L/kg VS methane when feeding was ranged between 31% and 47% C5 (v/v). Influence of variable feeding on mesophilic and thermophilic co-digestion of Laminaria digitata and cattle manure

Abstract In this study the effect of various feeding ratios on mesophilic (∼35 °C) and thermophilic (∼50 °C) co-digestion of brown algae Laminaria digitata and cattle manure was investigated. Algae input of 15% VS caused no influence on specific methane yield from mesophilic co-digester while deteriorated the process parameters such as the development of propionic acid in total volatile fatty acids (tVFA) pattern of the thermophilic co-digester.
