Effects of statins, fibrates, rosuvastatin, and ezetimibe beyond cholesterol: the modulation of LDL size and subclasses in high-risk patients.

2007

Increasing evidence suggests that the quality-rather than just the quantity-of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) exerts a great influence on cardiovascular risk. LDLs comprise multiple subclasses with discrete size and density, and different physicochemical composition, metabolic behaviors, and atherogenicity. Individuals generally cluster into 2 broad subgroups. Most have a predominance of large LDLs, and some have a higher proportion of small particles. Small, dense LDLs are good predictors of cardiovascular events and progression of coronary artery disease. Their predominance has been accepted as an emerging cardiovascular risk factor by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Tre…

Investigating the impact of anthropogenic land use on a hemiboreal lake ecosystem using carbon/nitrogen ratios and coupled-optical emission spectrosc…

2019

Anthropogenic impacts on lake ecosystems have increased substantially towards the present. However, the strength and timing in most cases are not evaluated in detail, missing valuable information on the response and recovery of an aquatic system. In this study, we use the sediment total organic carbon/total nitrogen ratio (C/N) and inductively coupled-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) elements and the available information about the biological processes to explore anthropogenic land use impact on the lake ecosystem. As a case study we selected a hemiboreal lake Trikātas (Latvia, NE Europe). The Pearson correlation was used to statistically test the correlations of all variables. Our r…

New phenolics, cytotoxicity and chemosystematic significance of Atriplex semibaccata

2019

Abstract The chemical characterization of the 70% hydromethanolic extract of Atriplex semibaccata (family: Chenopodiaceae) afforded a new methoxylated flavonol triglycoside, atrisemibaccatoside A (1), and a new lignanamide, (N-[(E)-m-hydroxycinnamoyl]tyramine (7), as well as, five known flavonols (2–6) and two lignanamides (8–9). The structures of the isolated compounds were established depending upon LR&HR-FAB-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses. The cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds (1–4, and 7–9) was investigated. Compounds 7, 8 and 9 weakly inhibited the proliferation of leukemia CCRF-CEM cells with IC50 values of 78.5, 46.3, and 71.2 μg/ml, respectively, and exhibited n…

Commodification of higher education? : an analysis of Education and Training Sector Improvement Programme (ETSIP) phase 1 (2006 to 2011) document of …

2017

The conceptualization of education is an essential term which generally tends to be understood in different ways, this is especially in terms of how it is supposed to function in the society. For Namibia, the notion of education in Namibia is emphasised as an important sector to enable the country to achieve developmental goals. This is partly because of the education perspective(s) that has shaped how the concept of education is theoretically and practically understood from legislative framework to policy discourse. Additionally, the Higher Education (HE) sector plays contributes immensely on the development that the country strives to achieve yet the sector has been faced with various pro…

Contrasting stress fields on correlating margins of the South Atlantic

2015

Made available in DSpace on 2018-12-11T17:25:39Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2015-01-01 The passiveness of passive continental margins across the globe is currently under debate since several studies have shown that these margins may experience a variety of stress states and undergo significant vertical movement post-breakup. Of special interest is the South Atlantic, because the bounding continents have very different recent geological histories, with Africa experiencing continental rifting whereas South America is influenced by subduction on the Pacific side. It is not clear to what extent the Atlantic continental margins are subject to the same stresses and vertical …
