Linear stability analysis of gas-fluidized beds for the prediction of incipient bubbling conditions

2010

Abstract This work focuses on the development of a novel linear stability criterion for the state of homogeneous fluidization regime, based on a new mathematical model for gas-fluidized beds. The model is developed starting from the well-known particle bed model. A mono-dimensional momentum balance is derived leading to a set of equations which explicitly include voidage-gradient dependent terms (elastic force) for both solid and fluid phases. A fully predictive criterion for the stability of homogeneous fluidization state is here proposed, based on the well-known Wallis’ linear stability analysis. The criterion requires the choice of an appropriate averaging distance, which in the present …

Mixed Non-Parametric and Parametric Estimation Techniques in R Package etasFLP for Earthquakes’ Description

2017

etasFLP is an R package which fits an epidemic type aftershock sequence (ETAS) model to an earthquake catalog; non-parametric background seismicity can be estimated through a forward predictive likelihood approach, while parametric components of triggered seismicity are estimated through maximum likelihood; estimation steps are alternated until convergence is obtained and for each event the probability of being a background event is estimated. The package includes options which allow its wide use. Methods for plot, summary and profile are defined for the main output class object. The paper provides examples of the package's use with description of the underlying R and Fortran routines.

Windowed Etas Models With Application To The Chilean Seismic Catalogs

2015

Abstract The seismicity in Chile is estimated using an ETAS (Epidemic Type Aftershock sequences) space–time point process through a semi-parametric technique to account for the estimation of parametric and nonparametric components simultaneously. The two components account for triggered and background seismicity respectively, and are estimated by alternating a ML estimation for the parametric part and a forward predictive likelihood technique for the nonparametric one. Given the geographic and seismological characteristics of Chile, the sensitivity of the technique with respect to different geographical areas is examined in overlapping successive windows with varying latitude. A different b…

A sustainable replacement for TiO2 in photocatalyst construction materials: Hydroxyapatite-based photocatalytic additives, made from the valorisation…

2018

The use of waste materials and by-products in building materials is of increasing importance to improve sustainability in construction, as is the incorporation of photocatalytic materials to both combat atmospheric pollution and protect the structures and façades. This work reports the innovative use of photocatalytic hydroxyapatite (HAp) based powders, derived from Atlantic codfish bone wastes, as an additive to natural hydraulic lime mortars. HAp is the main component of bone, and hence is non-toxic and biocompatible. This is the first time that such a calcium phosphate-based photocatalyst, or indeed any fish/marine derived wastes, have been added to building materials. A key factor is th…

Role of beta3-adrenergic receptors in intestinal diseases

2022

The Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), characterized by a gastro-intestinal tract inflammation, are a global health-care problem due to their morbidity, mortality and the constant increase in their worldwide incidence. The available therapies are still not curative only providing temporary symptomatic relief and reduction in complications.Although etiology is still unclear, IBD results in an interplay of various factors among which impaired and/or inappropriate immune response toward intestinal bacteria. Increasing disease incidence link environmental triggers occurring during socioeconomic development to IBD, especially stress. In this work, we aimed to investigated the role of adrenergic …

Cobalt in strontium titanate based perovskites: preparation, characterization and role in the photocatalytic propene partial oxidation

2016

Strontium titanate perovskite (SrTiO3) and analogous materials in which Y partially substitutes Sr have been prepared as basis to integrate Co in the structure. The Co inserrtion has been performed by wet impregnation or coprecipitation methods. The obtained powders have been physico-chemically characterized and tested as photocatalysts in the propene partial oxidation by using a solar simulating reactor. Correlation between photocatalytic performance and physicochemical characteristics of the different catalysts allows to assess a key role of local nanostructuring of CoOx sites on the selectivity and distribution of products.

Role of the support on the activity of H3PW12O40 supported on SiO2 or TiO2 in Catalytic and Photocatalytic propene hydration: An EPR Study

2016

Catalytic and catalytic photo-assisted hydration of propene to 2-propanol in gas-solid regime at atmospheric pressure and 85°C were carried out by using the Keggin heteropolyacid (HPA) H3PW12O40 (PW12) supported on home prepared SiO2, WO3, TiO2 or N-doped TiO2. The HPA played the key role both in catalytic and photocatalytic reactions; however, the support strongly influenced the binary material performance. The contemporary presence of heat and UV light improved the activity of the (photo)catalysts. EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) has been used to understand the intimate mechanism underlying the photoactivity of the supported heteropolyacid and the role played by the support.

The solvent-excluding surface as a descriptor of ionic channels: Gramicidin-A

1998

Abstract We have set out a methodology for checking the performance of the methods used to compute the Solvent-Excluding Surface. The method consists of computing the area of the Solvent-Excluding Surface of a model of channel, with a fixed pore size, for several values of the solvent radius. The graphical representation of the value of the area versus the radius of the solvent sphere shows a sharp change just at the radius of the pore. With this model we may analyze the ability of each method to describe small changes of the surface. We made the study with GEPOL93, older versions of GEPOL and MSDOT. The study is applied to a natural protein channel, as is Gramicidin-A, showing that this ty…

Mafia e costi psichici.
