Hydrothermal aging of carbon reinforced epoxy laminates with nanofibrous mats as toughening interlayers

2016

Electrospun mats have been applied as toughening interlayers in high performance carbon fiber epoxy composites. While the toughening mechanism exerted by the mat at the interface is the subject of several recent studies, no investigations are reported on the aging behaviour of laminates comprising these nanostructured elements. This work investigates the influence of the combined effect of water and temperature (90 °C) on laminates with Nylon 6,6 electrospun membranes placed either at the middle plane only or at each interlayer. The water-uptake behaviour is modelled by a two-stage diffusion model and compared with the behaviour of the neat resin and of the laminate without mats. Interestin…

POLYMER ELECTROSPUN NANOFIBERS AS INTERLEAVES FOR ENANCHEMENT OF CFRP LAMINATES DELAMINATION RESISTANCE

2019

Electrospinning process is a technique to produce nanoscale fibers that has evinced more interest in recent years due to its versatility and potential for applications in several applications. The mall size and the concomitant ultra-high specific surface area of electrospun nanofibers make them suitable for several applications, such as tissue engineering, biosensors, filtration and advanced polymer composites (1). In particular for carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) the huge specific surface area of electrospun nanofibers results in very large interfacial area between nanofibers and polymer matrix and therefore leads to substantial improvement of fiber-matrix interfacial interactions…

A Look at the Future Hemophilia A Treatment

2018

The current treatment of patients with hemophilia A is safer and more effective than the previous one. Prophylactic substitution involves repeated intravenous administration of plasma-derived factor VIII or recombinant factor VIII products, with inconveniences and possible adverse effects. The occurrence of inhibitors requires the administration of activated prothrombin complex concentrate or activated factor VII - an expensive treatment. The immune tolerance induction is the ideal treatment for patients with high titres of inhibitors - the only potential way to eliminate inhibitors and very expensive. For these reasons, the medical world is interested in the advances that scientific resear…

TIO2 brookite: Properties, synthesis and applications

2017

Brookite is one of the less studied polymorphic phases of titanium dioxide. Indeed, synthetic procedures affording brookite as a pure phase were not straightforward and have been only recently optimized. For this reason, brookite has received particular attention in the last years, especially as a promising photocatalytic material for environmental remediation and for the synthesis of valuable organic products. The present chapter will review the main synthetic methods reported in literature to produce brookite as a pure phase or mixed with rutile and/or anatase. Morphological, structural and electronic properties both of pure or variously modified brookite will be presented. The particular…

Mixing dynamics in uncovered unbaffled stirred tanks

2014

Abstract The present work is aimed at providing experimental information on mixing rates in an unbaffled vessel under free surface vortexing conditions. The planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique was used for measuring the dispersion dynamics of a passive tracer over a vertical section of the vessel. In agreement with the quite scant literature information available for these systems, results confirm the existence of two well defined, partially segregated, zones that give rise to a double mixing dynamics behavior. A suitable mixing time definition is proposed and applied to a number of experimental runs with different stirrer geometries and agitation speeds. Results confirm that…

CFD simulations of dense sloid-liquid suspensions in baffled stirred tanks: Prediction of suspension curves

2011

Mixing of solid particles into liquids within contactors mechanically agitated by stirrers is a topic of primary importance for several industrial applications. A great research effort has been devoted to the assessment of the minimum impeller speed (Njs) able to guarantee the suspension of all particles. Conversely, only little attention has been paid so far to the evaluation of the amount of solid particles that are suspended at impeller speeds lower than Njs. In some cases the loss in available interfacial area between particles and liquid could be reasonably counterbalanced by a decreased mechanical power, making it of interest to evaluate the percentage of suspended solids at different…

CFD simulation of channels for direct and reverse electrodialysis

2012

Flows within very thin channels, typically filled with spacers, can be often encountered in many processes such as electrodialysis (ED) and reverse electrodialysis (RED). Although the ED and the RED processes have been studied for a long time, the optimization of the fluid dynamics within the channels is still an open problem. In the present work, realized within the EU-FP7 funded REAPower project, computational fluid dynamics simulations were carried out in order to predict the fluid flow field inside a single ED/RED channel. Some different configurations were tested which includes: an empty channel, a channel provided with a spacer, and a channel filled with a purposely manufactured fiber…

Residence time distribution of solid particles in a continuous, high-aspect-ratio multiple-impeller stirred vessel

2004

Abstract In this paper experimental information on the retention time distribution (RTD) of solid particles in a high-aspect-ratio vessel, stirred by three equally spaced Rushton turbines, is presented. The relevant data were obtained by a special technique named twin system approach (TSA) that greatly simplifies the handling of particle-laden streams and is therefore particularly suited for investigating particle RTD in flow systems. The technique fundamentals are first summarized, together with the data analysis procedure. This lastly requires a numerical deconvolution operation that is easily performed with the help of Z -transforms. Two different approaches for excluding the spurious co…

REWAQUA: an advanced technology for water purification in sustainable aquaculture based on photocatalytic ozonation

2017

The present study has been undertaken in order to test the real potential of photocatalytic ozonation in a bench-scale recirculating aquaculture system working on a 180 L reef coral aquarium. Notably, this choice may be considered representative. In fact, (i) the system is virtually closed so that fresh water turnover is practically negligible, (ii) the presence of living organisms is highly diversified (corals, fishes, molluscs, echinoderms and crustaceans) and some of them are particularly sensitive to water quality, (iii) high salinity strongly puts a strain on the purification system. The hereby presented purification method has been named REWAQUA, which stands for REcycling Water for A…
