Characterization of pressure retarded osmosis lab-scale systems

2016

Power generation from salinity gradient is a viable alternative to produce energy from renewable sources. Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) is one of the technologies proposed so far for the exploitation of such energy source. In the present preliminary work, two different geometry modules were tested under atmospheric pressure (i.e. forward osmosis or depressurized-PRO conditions). The first one is a conventional planar geometry cell. The second is a customized cylindrical membrane module, able to mechanically support the osmotic membrane along with the spacers. The latter, thanks to its design, allows membranes and spacers to be easily changed for testing purposes. A novel simplified proced…

On the nature of macroradicals formed upon radiolysis of aqueous poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) solutions

2020

In this work we have explored the nature of macroradicals formed upon radiolysis of aqueous poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) solutions using pulse radiolysis, density functional theory (DFT) and literature data. On the basis of literature data on site-specific kinetics of hydrogen abstraction from simple amides and spectra corresponding to specific radical sites on the same amides we have assessed the distribution of H-atom abstraction by `OH radicals from different positions on the pyrrolidone ring and the polymer backbone. Pulse radiolysis experiments performed at different doses per pulse and different PVP concentrations demonstrate that the H-abstracting radiolysis products are not quanti…

Oligonucleotide-decorated carboxyl-modified PVP nanogels: a new platform for diagnosis and gene-therapy.

2012

Nanogels, or nanoscalar chemically crosslinked polymer networks, were generated by simultaneous crosslinking of Poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and grafting of acrylic acid (AA) monomer through e-beam irradiation of their aqueous solutions. The yield of the process is very high and no separation or complex purification procedures are required since no recourse to surfactants or organic solvents is made. The administered irradiation dose (40 kGy) imparts also sterility to the obtained nanogels in the form of aqueous dispersions. Control of particle size and size-distribution can be achieved by proper selection of the irradiation conditions. In particular, we obtained nanogel variants with av…

Multi-Functional Nanogels for Tumor Targeting and Redox-Sensitive Drug and siRNA Delivery

2016

(1) Background: A new family of nanosystems able to discern between normal and tumor cells and to release a therapeutic agent in controlled way were synthetized by e-beam irradiation. This technique permits to obtain biocompatible, sterile, carboxyl-functionalized polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-co-acrylic acid) nanogels (NGs); (2) Methods: Here, we performed a targeting strategy based on the recognition of over-expressed proteins on tumor cells, like the folate receptor. The selective targeting was demonstrated by co-culture studies and flow cytometry analysis, using folate conjugated NGs. Moreover, nanoparticles were conjugated to a chemotherapeutic drug or to a pro-apoptotic siRNA through a gl…

MODELING OF A TiO2-COATED QUARTZ -WOOL PACKED-BED PHOTOCATALYTIC REACTOR

2010

A fixed-bed, photocatalytic laboratory reactor aimed to degrade pollutants from water streams was designed and built. Quartz wool coated with a thin film of TiO2 was employed as the reactor filling. The photocatalyst was placed in the reactor forming a loose packing to guarantee the intimate contact among reactants, photons, and the photocatalytic surface. This reactor was employed to study the photocatalytic decomposition of a model pollutant (formic acid). A reactor–radiation–reaction model was developed, which was comprised of the reactor mass balance, radiation model, and kinetic model for the degradation of formic acid. The local superficial rate of photon absorption, which was necessa…

Radiation model of a TiO2-coated, quartz wool, packed-bed photocatalytic reactor

2010

The radiation field of a packed-bed photocatalytic reactor filled with quartz wool coated with titanium dioxide was modeled using the Monte Carlo technique and the following information: the radiation flux emitted by the lamps, the diameter size distribution of the quartz fiber cloth, the mass of quartz fibers and of TiO2 that was immobilized on the fiber surface as well as the refractive index and the spectral absorption coefficient of the materials of the system. Modeling predictions were validated with radiometer measurements of the transmitted radiation through the reactor, the root mean square error being < 9.7%. Finally, by means of a parametric study, the validated model was used to …

Paper-TiO2 composite: An effective photocatalyst for 2-propanol degradation in gas phase

2018

Two simple routes for the synthesis of a paper-TiO2 composite were tuned up and the efficiency of the resulting paper-TiO2 photocatalyst was investigated in the 2-propanol oxidation in gas phase. The first route involved the in-situ generation over the sheet of paper of a TiO2 layer starting from a solution of Ti (OBu)4 in tert-butanoliacetic acid, followed by hydrothermal treatment at 120 degrees C for 3 h. The sample was labelled as paper-TiO2 (H). The second approach was based on the adsorption on the paper of a ready-made suspension of titania nanoparticles (TiO2 sol), generated in autoclave at 140 degrees C and stable in acid medium at pH <3. The sample was labelled as paper-TiO2 (S). …

Beneficial Read-Through of aUSH1CNonsense Mutation by Designed Aminoglycoside NB30 in the Retina

2010

PURPOSE. The human Usher syndrome (USH) is the most frequent cause of inherited combined deaf-blindness. USH is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, assigned to three clinical types. The most severe type is USH1, characterized by profound inner ear defects and retinitis pigmentosa. Thus far, no effective treatment for the ophthalmic component of USH exists. The p.R31X nonsense mutation in USH1C leads to a disease causing premature termination of gene translation. Here, we investigated the capability of the novel synthetic aminoglycoside NB30 for the translational read-through of the USH1C-p.R31X nonsense mutation as a retinal therapy option. METHODS. Read-through of p.R31X by three com…

Nature of a Pigmented Substance in the Labyrinth

1964

The pigment existing in the loose connective tissue of the posterior labyrinth is originated by hemorrhage, pathological or “physiological” inflammations and wearing out of tissues. Such pigment is contained in macrophages.
