Minimalism in radiation synthesis of biomedical functional nanogels.
2012
A scalable, single-step, synthetic approach for the manufacture of biocompatible, functionalized micro- and nanogels is presented. In particular, poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone)-grafted-(aminopropyl)methacrylamide microgels and nanogels were generated through e-beam irradiation of PVP aqueous solutions in the presence of a primary amino-group-carrying monomer. Particles with different hydrodynamic diameters and surface charge densities were obtained at the variance of the irradiation conditions. Chemical structure was investigated by different spectroscopic techniques. Fluorescent variants were generated through fluorescein isothiocyanate attachment to the primary amino groups grafted to PVP, to …
Surface-relief gratings in halogen-bonded polymer-azobenzene complexes A concentration-dependence study
2017
In recent years, supramolecular complexes comprising a poly(4-vinylpyridine) backbone and azobenzene-based halogen bond donors have emerged as a promising class of materials for the inscription of light-induced surface-relief gratings (SRGs). The studies up to date have focused on building supramolecular hierarchies, i.e., optimizing the polymer–azobenzene noncovalent interaction for efficient surface patterning. They have been conducted using systems with relatively low azobenzene content, and little is known about the concentration dependence of SRG formation in halogen-bonded polymer–azobenzene complexes. Herein, we bridge this gap, and study the concentration dependence of SRG formation…
Antioxidant phenolic compounds recovery from Mangifera indica L. by-products by supercritical antisolvent extraction
2015
Abstract Supercritical Antisolvent Extraction (SAE) was used in the recovery of antioxidant compounds from mango by-products. The antioxidant extract was obtained by solid–liquid extraction using aqueous acetone (80% v/v) and subsequent adsorption/desorption in C18 cartridge. Recovery of antioxidants was performed by SAE using SC-CO 2 as antisolvent. The temperature and pressure parameters were varied in the range 35–45 °C and 8–15 MPa. The SAE process allowed the recovery of about 90% of the initial phenolic compounds, the best recovery was obtained at 40 °C and 10 MPa and the main compounds were mangiferin, isomangiferin, quercetin 3-O-galactoside, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-x…
Mothers who killed or attempted to kill their child: life circumstances, childhood abuse, and types of killing.
1999
The objectives of the present study were to examine the life circumstances, childhood abuse, and types of homicidal acts of 48 mothers who killed/attempted to kill their children) under age 12 between 1970-96 in Finland. Data on the mothers’ life stresses, psychological problems, and childhood abuse were collected from mental state examination (MSE) reports. The cases were divided into 15 neonaticides and 33 mothers who killed an older child. Childhood abuse was documented in 63% of the mothers’ MSE reports. Qualitative analysis identified neonaticides, joint homicide-suicide attempts, impulsive aggression, psychotic acts, postpartum depression, and abusive acts. Nonlinear principal compone…
Synthesis and characterization of titanium dioxide and titanium dioxide–based materials
2021
Abstract The aim of the chapter is to describe some different preparation methods and characterization techniques for bare, supported, and coupled TiO2 samples used in different fields. Particular attention has been paid both to the fundamental aspects of the different TiO2 preparation and characterization methods and the practical applications that the results obtained can have. Various examples have been reported from the literature to demonstrate the usefulness that students and scientists working with TiO2-based materials in different research areas can derive from various characterizations.
CFD prediction of concentration polarization phenomena in spacer-filled channels for Reverse Electrodialysis
2014
Abstract Salinity Gradient Power generation through Reverse Electrodialysis (SGP-RE) is a promising technology to convert the chemical potential difference of a salinity gradient into electric energy. In SGP-RE systems, as in most membrane processes, concentration polarization phenomena may affect the theoretical driving force and thus the performance of the process. Operating conditions, including the feed solution flow rate and concentration and the channels׳ geometrical configuration, may greatly influence both the polarization effect and the pumping energy consumption. The present work uses CFD to investigate the dependence of concentration polarization and pressure drop on flow rate, f…
CFD Modelling of the Demister in the Multi Stage Flash Desalination plant
2011
Abstract Demisters are used to remove entrained brine droplets from flashed off vapor within the flashing stages of the multi stage flash desalination process (MSF). This is necessary to prevent accumulation of brine droplets on the outside surface of the condenser tubes and contamination of the desalinated water. The aim of this work is to design a new demister with lower pressure drop and unaffected separation efficiency which can be later installed in the flashing stages of the MSF plant and causes reduction in the required heat transfer area. In this work the demister performance is predicted as a function of design (wire diameter), and operating parameters (stage temperature). This obj…
Preparation, Characterization and Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2 Impregnated with the Heteropolyacid H3PW12O40: Photo-assisted Degradation of 2-prop…
2009
Abstract Both commercial and home prepared TiO2 samples impregnated with tungstophosphoric acid (H3PW12O40) were prepared and used for the photo-assisted degradation of 2-propanol in gas–solid regime. The characterization results evidenced a good coverage of the polyoxometalate (POM) onto the surface of both types of TiO2 samples along with a marginal effect of the presence of ethanol or HCl during the POM impregnation step on the specific surface area, porosity, morphology, crystallinity and acidity of the samples. Propene was the main intermediate product found in 2-propanol photocatalytic degradation by using the samples containing POM as the photocatalyst, whereas propanone was mainly o…

Photocatalytic Gas-Solid Propene Hydration and Liquid-Solid Glycerol Dehydration by using Keggin Heteropolyacids Supported on TiO2
2015
Photo)catalytic propylene hydration to 2-propanol and glycerol dehydration to acrolein reactions were carried out by using Keggin heteropolyacids (HPAs) supported on TiO2. Binary materials have been prepared by impregnation of H3PW12O40, H3PMo12O40 and H4SiW12O40, on TiO2 Evonik P25. Moreover, a binary material consisting of H4SiW12O40 and TiO2 was prepared via a hydrothermal treatment and tested for the same reactions. All the materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy observations (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-rayand (EDX) measurements, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy…
