Analytical performance issues: comparison of ATP bioluminescence and aerobic bacterial count for evaluating surface cleanliness in an Italian hospita…
2013
Contaminated hospital surfaces have been demonstrated to be an important environmental reservoir of microorganisms that can increase the risk of nosocomial infection in exposed patients. As a consequence, cleaning and disinfecting hospital environments play an important role among strategies for preventing healthcare-associated colonization and infections. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether adenosine triphosphate (ATP) presence, measured by bioluminescence methods, can predict microbiological contamination of hospital surfaces. The study was carried out between September and December 2012 at the University Hospital “P. Giaccone” of Palermo. A total of 193 randomly selected…
Sustainability of food industry wastes: a microbial approach
2021
Abstract Agro-food industrial by-products signify a grave environmental problem. In addition to the conventional irrigation with wastewaters, the application of solids to the soil, and the extraction of worthwhile compounds for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food industries, a microbiological strategy is also possible. In this review, the most promising microbiological methods for the valorization of wine and oil by-products are shown. Recently, there has been an upsurge in the exploitation of the waste materials generated by the wine and olive oil industries. Treatments by physical and chemical processes are generally costly, and they do not often provide entire solutions. Microbiologi…
Host preference in dark septate root endophytes of prairie grasses
2007
International audience; Microbiological examination of prairie grass roots usually reveals the presence of diverse mycorrhizal and dark septate endophytic (DSE) fungi. Some of these fungi can enhance plant resistance to abiotic stress in extreme environments. The host specificity of two DSE fungi isolated from pure stands of crested wheatgrass and Russian wildrye in southwest Saskatchewan was assessed in microcosms. Pure cultures of endophytic fungal isolates were obtained after plating surface sterile root pieces on Potato dextrose agar. Plugs containing these fungi were used to individually inoculate germinated surface sterile seeds of crested wheatgrass and Russian wildrye, and control p…
Ocena ścieków browarnianych w wybranych punktach linii technologicznej
2016
2014
Researches of microbiological diversity of soil on natural grassland and farmland in conditions of soil- climatic zones of Poltava oblast were conducted. General microbiological activities of soil (intensity of linen decomposition, %), numerosity of the main ecological-trophic groups of soil microorganisms, numerosity of fungi were detected. Coefficients of mineralization-mobilization, pedotroficity, oligotrophicity were calculated in accordance with correlation of the main ecological-trophic groups of soil microorganisms. Results of soil microbiological monitoring are analyzed and generalized. Was determined that soil of natural ecosystem (natural grassland and virgin land) has highest int…
Management of odontogenic infection of pulpal and periodontal origin
2007
The dental biofilm is a complex bacterial ecosystem that undergoes evolution, maturing and development, and thus leads to odontogenic infection. The infection is normally located in the tissues of the dental organ itself, and follows a chronic course of evolution. However, bacterial pathogens express virulence factors in the biofilm, and this together with changes in host immunity, may cause clinical exacerbations and spread of infection to other areas of the body. Odontogenic infection management should take into consideration the fact that therapeutic success lies in the control of the infectious aetiologic agent, using mechanical-surgical debridement and/or antimicrobial therapy. Debride…
Combined use of modified atmosphere packaging and high pressure to extend the shelf-life of raw poultry sausage
2014
International audience; The contribution of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) in extending the shelf-life of high-pressure treated raw poultry sausages was examined by considering microbial and oxidative stability (TBARs) aspects. Raw poultry sausages packaged under air or modified atmosphere (50% CO2–50% N2) were pressurized at 500 MPa during 5 min at a maximum temperature of 10.5 °C, subsequently allowed to refrigerated storage during 22 days. During storage, samples were tested at time intervals for headspace gas composition, pH, TBARs, Aerobic Mesophilic Counts (AMC) and Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) counts. The high pressure treatment could represent an efficient means of extending the …
Decision-Making Tools to Manage the Microbiology of Drinking Water Distribution Systems
2020
[EN] This paper uses a two-fold multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach applied for the first time to the field of microbial management of drinking water distribution systems (DWDS). Specifically, the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) was applied removing the need for reliance on expert judgement, and analysed interdependencies among water quality parameters and microbiological characteristics of DWDS composed of different pipe materials. In addition, the fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (FTOPSIS) ranked the most common bacteria identified during trials in a DWDS according to their relative abundance while managing vagueness…
Clinical and microbiological diagnosis of oral candidiasis
2013
Introduction: Candidiasis or oral candidiasis is the most frequent mucocutaneous mycosis of the oral cavity. It is produced by the genus Candida, which is found in the oral cavity of 53% of the general population as a common commensal organism. One hundred and fifty species have been isolated in the oral cavity, and 80% of the isolates correspond to Candida albicans, which can colonize the oral cavity alone or in combination with other species. Transformation from commensal organism to pathogen depends on the intervention of different predisposing factors that modify the microenvironment of the oral cavity and favor the appearance of opportunistic infection. The present study offers a liter…
