Opiate-induced dopamine release is modulated by severity of alcohol dependence: an [(18)F]fallypride positron emission tomography study.

2011

Background Preclinical data implicate the reinforcing effects of alcohol to be mediated by interaction between the opioid and dopamine systems of the brain. Specifically, alcohol-induced release of β-endorphins stimulates μ-opioid receptors (MORs), which is believed to cause dopamine release in the brain reward system. Individual differences in opioid or dopamine neurotransmission have been suggested to be responsible for enhanced liability to abuse alcohol. In the present study, a single dose of the MOR agonist remifentanil was administered in detoxified alcohol-dependent patients and healthy control subjects to mimic the β-endorphin-releasing properties of ethanol and to assess the effect…

Almond (Prunus dulcis cv. Casteltermini) Skin Confectionery By-Products: New Opportunity for the Development of a Functional Blackberry (Rubus ulmifo…

2021

This work proposes for the first time a model for reusing almond (Prunus dulcis cv. Casteltermini from Sicily, Southern Italy) skin to formulate a new functional blackberry (Rubus ulmifolius Schott) jam. For this purpose, blackberries were analysed fresh and as jam, traditionally prepared with a minimum fruit amount of 80%. Different percentages of almond skin (20, 15, and 10% w/w) were added to jam. The phytochemical profile of enriched jam was investigated by LC-ESI/LTQOrbitrap/MS analyses. Anthocyanins, hydrolysable tannins, and triterpenoids were identified in a blackberry extract, while proanthocyanidins, flavonoids, and oxylipins were identified in an almond extract. The n-hexane extr…

Cytotoxic activity of several ent-kaurane derivatives of atractyligenin. Synthesis of unreported diterpenic skeleton by chemical rearrangement

2022

Atractyloside, carboxyatractyloside, their aglycon atractyligenin, and several synthetic derivatives were tested and found to be active against a panel of human tumor cell lines. Atractyligenin was subjected to oxidation, bromination, and elimination reactions, obtaining several compounds. A singular skeleton was synthesized by chemical rearrangement starting from 3 beta-bromo-2,15-diketoatractyligenin methyl ester. The synthesized compounds resulted active against all cell lines tested. In particular, 15-ketoatractyligenin methyl ester and 3 beta bromo-2,15-diketoatractyligenin methyl ester resulted the most active with IC50 values of 0.427 and 0.723 mu M against A375 melanoma cell line. Triterpenes and fatty acids from the rhyzomes of Atractylis gummifera L

1999

It is reported the investigation of the light petroleum ether extract of the rhizomes of Atractylis gummifera L. GC-MS analysis and medium pressure chromatographies afforded the presence of seven fatty acids and of the following triterpenes: lupenyl acetate, α-amyrin acetate, β-amyrin acetate, taraxasterol acetate, α-amyrin, lupeol, β-amyrin, taraxasterol, campesterol, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, betulin, erythrodiol, uvaol, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid and betulinic acid.

Augmented Reality Gamification for Human Anatomy

2019

This paper focuses on the use of Augmented Reality technologies in relation to the introduction of game design elements to support university medical students in their learning activities during a human anatomy laboratory. In particular, the solution we propose will provide educational contents visually connected to the physical organ, giving also the opportunity to handle a 3D physical model that is a perfect reproduction of a real human organ.

Considerations on an integrated biochronological scale of Italian Quaternary Mammals

2011

The paper of MASINI and SALA (2007) regarding an integrated approach on the stratigraphic distribution patterns of large and small mammals in the late Pliocene and Pleistocene of the Italian peninsula is analysed, showing the weak and strong points. New data are presented on the mamm…

Mobiiliopetuksen käyttömahdollisuuksia : oppilaiden omien mobiililaitteiden käyttö peruskoulun alakoulun opetuksessa

2015

Muutaman viime vuoden aikana mobiililaitteiden käyttö kouluissa on yleistynyt. Tämä on osittain aiheuttanut ristiriitaista keskustelua laitteiden käytöstä opetuksessa. Osa opettajista on ottanut mobiililaitteet opetuskäyttöön innokkaasti. Tutkimus teht…

Differential Promotion of Glutamate Transporter Expression and Function by Glucocorticoids in Astrocytes from Various Brain Regions

2005

Steroids that activate glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) and mineralocorticoid receptors have important regulatory effects on neural development, plasticity, and the body's stress response. Here, we investigated the role of corticosteroids in regulating the expression of the glial glutamate transporters glial glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1) and glutamate-aspartate transporter (GLAST) in rat primary astrocytes. The synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone provoked a marked increase of GLT-1 transcription and protein levels in cortical astrocytes, whereas GLAST expression remained unaffected. Up-regulation of GLT-1 expression was accompanied by an enhanced glutamate uptake, which could be blocked …

Gaming as a Key Approach for the Recovery Process of a Public Space: The Case Study of the Old Chemical Plant ‘Chimica Arenella’ in Palermo

2021

This poster describes the FORGE (FactOry of uRban GamEs) project, a proposal that our research group launched in partnership with the Municipality of Palermo (Italy) and other local stakeholders in 2019. FORGE will be hosted in what was previously a chemical plant (the former 'Chimica Arenella') and is an open factory designed to collect needs and to generate interventions for urban innovation. The four key terms we have used for the project are urban, game, factory and participation. In fact, FORGE employs a participatory methodological model based on the concept of game, aimed at supporting social and economic development through a platform for participatory co-design. FORGE plays also a …
