Induction of plant resistance against pathogens by defense elicitors constitutes an attractive strategy to reduce the use of fungicides in crop protection. However, all elicitors do not systematically confer protection against pathogens. Elicitor-induced resistance (IR) thus merits to be further characterized in order to understand what makes an elicitor efficient. In this study, the oligosaccharidic defense elicitors H13 and PS3, respectively, ineffective and effective to trigger resistance of grapevine leaves against downy mildew, were used to compare their effect on the global leaf metabolism. Ultra high resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) analysis allowed us to obtain and compare t…

Plant diseases a herald of environmental changes

2011

Environmental changes can alter morphology and physiology of plants, and geographic distribution of both wild and cultural species. All these modifications reflect in plant-associated microflora and development of plant pathogens as well. Climate warming causes a pole-ward shift not only different plants but also their pathogens. ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AND MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT: WHAT CORRELATION?

2006

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AND MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT: WHAT CORRELATION? Aim. Atrial fibrillation (AF), in addition to macroembolic complications, may also produce multiple cerebral ischemic areas due to microembolic phenomena and transient hypoperfusion, eventually leading to a progressive cognitive impairment and even to acclaimed vascular dementia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of cognitive impairment in patients with AF. The reported results concern data obtained at the moment of recruitment. Methods. The authors studied 42 patients with a history of non valvular AF (paroxysmal, persistent, recurrent or permanent) and 40 homogenous controls in sinus rhythm without pre…

Breeding For Organic Farming : Obtaining And Evaluation Of Flax Somaclonal Families

2015

Plant calli culture could be used as a source of genetic changes (somaclonal variation). There are known several flax varieties, bred on the basis of somaclonal variation, with improved resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, plant height, seed yield and other traits. This method is useful for obtaining the new initial material for flax breeding, including for intensification of breeding for organic farming. Goal of the study was to obtain plants-regenerants from the calli culture of the fibre flax variety ‘Vega 2’ and to evaluate their agronomical traits and resistance to powdery mildew. For obtaining plants-regenerants was used early elaborated protocol of somatic calli cultivation. Ag…

Oral health of cystic fibrosis patients at a north american center: A pilot study

2019

Background The objective of this study was to describe the oral health status of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) children in a US facility. Material and Methods Twenty CF children ages 6-18 were recruited from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Pulmonary Clinic. Parents completed a health questionnaire. Clinical examinations checked dental caries using the dmft/DMFT index, dental hygiene using the Simplified Greene-Vermillion Index (DI-S), gingival inflammation using the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs, and enamel defects using the modified Developmental Defects of Enamel Index. Results The majority (90%) brush twice a day, 65% consume sugary snacks, and 70% visit the dentist every 6 mont…

The important impact of dental care on haemostatic treatment burden in patients with mild haemophilia

2022

Background: Mild haemophilia (MH) is mainly characterized by haemorrhages secondary to surgery/invasive procedures or trauma. Haemostatic treatment in MH ranges from on demand to short prophylaxis according to the type of bleeding events and the basal clotting factor level. Oral surgery and dental extractions can represent a frequent haemostatic challenge in MH requiring appropriate treatment. However, only few studies on limited numbers of patients are available in the literature regarding the implications of dental management in patients with MH. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of dental care on the burden of haemostatic treatment in patients affected by MH…

Direct visualization of oral-cavity tissue fluorescence as novel aid for early oral cancer diagnosis and potentially malignant disorders monitoring.

2011

Direct visualization of the oral tissue autofluorescence has been recently reviewed in several studies as a possible adjunctive tool for early recognition and diagnosis of potentially malignant and malignant oral disorders. The aims of this study were to assess: a) the value of a simple handheld device for tissue auto-fluorescence visualization of potentially malignant oral lesions; and b) the sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of tested device, using histological examination as the gold standard. 175 consecutive patients, with at least one clinical oral lesion, were enrolled in the study. Clinical conventional inspections were performed for each patient by two blind operator…

Visuospatial processing in schizophrenia: Does it share common mechanisms with pseudoneglect?

2011

International audience; ''Schizophrenia patients demonstrate behavioural and cerebral lateralised anomalies, prompting some authors to suggest they exhibit a mild form of right unilateral neglect. To better describe and understand lateralised visuospatial anomalies in schizophrenia, three experiments were run using tasks often utilised to study visuospatial processing in healthy individuals and in neglect patients: the Behavioural Inattention Test (BIT), the manual line bisection task with and without a local cueing paradigm, the landmark task (or line bisection judgement), and the number bisection task. Although the schizophrenia patients did not exhibit the full-blown neglect syndrome, th…

Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuropathies: A Presentation of 15 Cases

2008

Purpose The aim of this study is to present a clinical series of patients with trigeminal neuropathy and their treatment. Patients and Methods We present a retrospective study of 15 cases of idiopathic trigeminal neuropathies, with unilateral involvement of 1 or more divisions of the trigeminal nerve. The clinical, radiologic, and laboratory data of the patients, in addition to the treatment and clinical evolution, were reviewed. The patients were followed up for a mean of 34.4 months (range, 12-120 months). Results The study consisted of 11 women and 4 men. The numbness was predominantly located in the innervated mental area and extended in some cases to the first and second trigeminal div…
