Effect of a novel physical pretreatment process on the drying kinetics of seedless grapes

In this paper an alternative physical method for enhancing the drying rate of seedless grapes is proposed. It consists of the superficial abrasion of the grape peel using an inert abrasive material. The effectiveness of this novel process was compared to that of the traditional ethyl oleate dipping process by analysing not only their respective drying times, but also the peel surfaces by scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the drying kinetics of the above two treatments was reconstructed by using a mathematical model in which the grape pretreatment used was assumed to affect the water diffusivity in the grape peel, but not in the grape pulp. The Cation as a Tool to Get Spin-Canted Three-Dimensional Iron(III) Networks

Alkyl-substituted ammonium cations (X) allow the preparation of a series of spin-canted oxo- and oxalato-bridged three-dimensional iron(III) networks, exhibiting magnetic ordering at T(c) values ranging from 40 to 56 K. The value of T(c) varies with the cation despite the lack of significant structural modifications.

Compressibility and Structural Stability of Nanocrystalline TiO2 Anatase Synthesized from Freeze-Dried Precursors

The high-pressure structural behavior of 30 nm nanoparticles of anatase TiO2 was studied under hydrostatic and quasi-hydrostatic conditions up to 25 GPa. We found that the structural sequence is not sensitive to the use of different pressure transmitting media. Anatase-type nanoparticles exhibit a phase transition beyond 12 GPa toward a baddeleyite-type structure. Under decompression this phase transition is irreversible, and a metastable columbite-type structure is recovered at ambient conditions. Crystallite size of kaolinites as indicator of different geochemical types of bauxite

A simple microstructural X-ray diffraction analysis using the Voigt function method reveals differences between bauxite deposits in the Iberian Range – Catalanides area (NE, Spain). The highest values of apparent crystallite sizes, measured by volume weighted Dv values from 001 kaolinite reflection, have been found in bauxites of type 1.

2D and 3D Anilato-Based Heterometallic M(I)M(III) Lattices: The Missing Link

The similar bis-bidentate coordination mode of oxalato and anilato-based ligands is exploited here to create the first examples of 2D and 3D heterometallic lattices based on anilato ligands combining M(I) and a M(III) ions, phases already observed with oxalato but unknown with anilato-type ligands. These lattices are prepared with alkaline metal ions and magnetic chiral tris(anilato)metalate molecular building blocks: [M(III)(C6O4X2)3](3-) (M(III) = Fe and Cr; X = Cl and Br; (C6O4X2)(2-) = dianion of the 3,6-disubstituted derivatives of 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone, H4C6O4). Thermally highly stable amorphous zinc phosphate intermediates during the formation of zinc phosphate hydrate.

The mechanisms by which amorphous intermediates transform into crystalline materials are still poorly understood. Here we attempt to illuminate the formation of an amorphous precursor by investigating the crystallization process of zinc phosphate hydrate. This work shows that amorphous zinc phosphate (AZP) nanoparticles precipitate from aqueous solutions prior to the crystalline hopeite phase at low concentrations and in the absence of additives at room temperature. AZP nanoparticles are thermally stable against crystallization even at 400 °C (resulting in a high temperature AZP), but they crystallize rapidly in the presence of water if the reaction is not interrupted. A laser-pulse-induced spallation of the passive film is induced in situ without any contact between the laser beam and the passive film. The influence of an ion-exchange resin on the kinetics of hydration of tricalcium silicate

The addition of a finely-ground ion-exchange resin makes it possible to modify the hydration kinetics of C3S pastes. Analyses of the liquid phase in pastes and more dilute suspensions show that the resin exchanges calcium ions for sodium ions very rapidly during the early stage of hydration and therefore the concentration of silica in solution increases. The resin impacts the hydration of C3S by other mechanisms which depends on the resin quantity added. For a high resin quantity, the induction period is very short, but the longer-term hydration is enhanced compared to a reference sample without resin. Zr- Hf Fractionation During Water-Rock Interaction

International audience; Zr and Hf are two elements having same ionic charge and similar ionic size at a given coordination number. Despite the Zr/Hf ratio is considered to be quite constant in meteorites and lithospheric rocks, seawaters collected from the surface down to varying depths of several Pacific Ocean stations reveal that the Zr/Hf ratio increases by one order of magnitude.
