Morphology Modification of Polyethylene/Clay Nanocomposite Samples under Convergent Flow

The morphology of PE/CL nanocomposite samples subjected to convergent flows is studied. Elongational flow – the typical flow involved in spinning and film-blowing processing operations – significantly increases with the reduction of the capillary diameter. The values of the convergent extensional stress (calculated by Cogswell's formula) for the PE/CL systems, for all the adopted capillary geometries, are greater than the calculated values for pure polyethylene. NMR-investigation of the mechanism of silver mercaptide thermolysis in amorphous polystyrene

Polymer-embedded silver clusters have been prepared by thermal decomposition of silver dodecylmercaptide previously dissolved in amorphous polystyrene. The morphology and structure of silver clusters have been determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and large angle X-ray diffractometry (XRD), respectively. The mechanism involved in the thermolysis reaction was elucidated by different NMR techniques. The thermolysis produced thiol-derivatized silver clusters (i.e., silver clusters coated with a self-organized thiol monolayer, Agx(SC12H25)y) and had the effect of increasing the branching degree of polystyrene due to enhanced cross-linking.

Effects of Thermal Treatment on the Structure of Eu:YAG Nanopowder

Eu:YAG nanopowder precursors were obtained by co-precipitation of aluminium, yttrium and europium nitrates solution with ammonia. The hydroxides precursors were calcined at different temperatures from 900 to 1200°C as a function of holding time (1, 2 and 6 hours). The presence of Eu3+ ions in the matrix was confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-rays analysis. X-Ray Diffraction investigation by the Rietveld method shows that the sample treated at 900°C for 1 hour is essentially the garnet phase with the minor presence of hexagonal and monoclinic metastable phases. XRD Line Broadening Studies on Mullite

An X-ray diffraction microstructural study on 110, 220, 001 and 111 peaks has been performed on mullite in the temperature range of primary mullite formation in order to monitor nucleation and growth process. Considering the crystallinity of the starting kaolinites, a greater disorder of the kaolinite has been found to enhance the mullite formation. Isothermal growth is related to a decrease in the Al 2 O 3 content of mullite.

Upconversion luminescence in erbium doped transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing hexagonal NaYF4 nanocrystals

Abstract In this work transparent erbium doped oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing hexagonal NaYF 4 nanocrystals has been prepared by melt-quenching and subsequent heat treatment of the precursor glass. The formation of β-NaYF 4 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements. The overall intensity of the upconversion luminescence of the glass ceramics sample is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the precursor glass. The observed enhancement of the efficiency is explained by the incorporation of Er 3+ into low-phonon β-NaYF 4 crystalline phase.

Europium doped zirconia luminescence

Abstract The luminescence properties and crystalline structure of ZrO2:Eu nanocrystals doped with different concentrations of Eu were studied. Luminescence from the Eu2+ state was not observed even if the electrons and holes were created up to ∼1019 cm−3; thus it was suggested the Eu3+ was not an efficient trap for electrons possibly due to Eu3+ negative charge relative to the crystalline lattice. The mutual interaction between Eu3+ ions was not strong up to 5 at.% concentration. The stabilization of ZrO2 tetragonal as well as cubic structure by Eu3+ is possible.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for studying passive layers on steel rebars immersed in alkaline solutions simulating concrete pores

Present paper deals with the use of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to identify different processes in the passive layer growth over steel rebar surface immersed in an alkaline media simulating the concrete pore solution. Two cases have been considered: a passive layer spontaneously grown in a high alkaline media and a passive layer assisted by the application of an anodic potential in the same media. The application of electric equivalent circuits allows distinguishing between the different mechanisms occurring in this passive layer when grows in different conditions. Materials such as added clays, weight materials, drill solids and metalic wear products in the drilling fluid are known to distort the geomagnetic field at the location of the Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tool magnetometers that are used to measure the direction of well path. This distortion contributes to substantial errors in determination of azimuth while drilling deviated wells. These errors may result in missing the target of a long deviated 12 ¼″ section in the range of 1–200m; representing a significant cost to be mitigated.
