Mesoscopic structure of marble determined by combined USANS and SANS

Marbles, carbonatic (i.e. calcitic–dolomitic) rocks deriving from the metamorphic evolution of previous carbonates, are often rather similar to each other in many respects (i.e. mineralogical, physical–structural and chemical), and thus difficult to identify. In search for a diagnostic method to provenance marbles, we have selected a limited number of Italian white marbles representing a wide array of metamorphic (i.e. thermal) levels. The mesoscale structural arrangement of these samples was derived by means of combined Ultra Small Angle and Small Angle Neutron Scattering experiments. Thermal relaxation of colour centres in LiBaF3crystals

Abstract Processes in LiBaF3 crystals caused by the thermal decay of F-type centres created by X-irradiation at room temperature have been examined. It is shown that the thermal decay of F-type centres results in the formation of two kinds of electron centres peaking at 630 nm and 740 nm differing in thermal stability. Weak TSL intensity, accompanying the decay of F-centres, also observed as well as the low value of the process activation energy suggest that due to the presence of moving anion vacancies a random walk of the F-centres occur. Ion diffusion-controlled thermally stimulated processes in x-ray irradiated halide crystals

The ionic and ion diffusion-controlled thermally stimulated relaxation (TSR) processes in CaF2, BaF2, LiBaF3 and KBr crystals were investigated above 290 K by means of the ionic conductivity, ionic thermally stimulated depolarisation current (TSDC) and thermal bleaching techniques. Under a DC field the halide crystals store large ionic space charge. We were able to detect in CaF2, BaF2, LiBaF3 and KBr in the extrinsic ionic conductivity region a series of the ionic defect (the interstitial anion and/or anion vacancies - in fluorides; the cation vacancies - in KBr) release stages: 3-6 wide and overlapping ionic TSDC peaks. Computer modeling of metal colloid formation in tracks of swift heavy ions in ionic solids

Abstract We present results of computer modelling of the aggregation of primary radiation defects—F centers—in ionic crystals within tracks of swift heavy ions. We study how F-aggregate properties depend on the initial density of primary Frenkel defects in the track and its radius. The mean number of F centers in aggregates is typically very small, about five defects, which greatly complicates detection of expected metal colloids by ESR.

Oxygen-related defects and energy accumulation in aluminum nitride ceramics

Abstract Features of oxygen-related defects in the AlN crystalline lattice were studied. Spectral characteristics of photoluminescence and photostimulated luminescence under the UV light irradiation of AlN ceramics were examined. The results obtained allow us to propose the mechanisms of luminescence and radiation-induced energy accumulation in AlN.

Radiation induced defects in SiO 2

The main luminescent centers in SiO 2 films are the red luminescence R (650 v nm; 1.85 v eV) of the non-bridging oxygen hole center (NBOHC) and the twofold-coordinated (divalent) silicon with a blue B (460 v nm; 2.7 v eV) and a UV band (285 v nm; 4.4 v eV). Especially the latter ones are produced under irradiation, but from existing precursors assumed as silicon related oxygen deficient centers (SiODC). Therefore, in order to prove these models we compare a direct oxygen implantation with a direct silicon implantation into SiO 2 layers. A Mössbauer spectroscopic study of salt lake sediments from Qaidam basin

Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry and chemical fractionation have been used to study the clay smaples in sediments of Charhan playa and Qinghai lake. The spectral components of the Mossbauer spectra of the samples are attributed to Fe2+ ions in chlorite and siderite, Fe3+ ions in clay minerals and hematite, and partly in amorphous ferric hydroxides. The essential difference in the mineral composition of the sediments of both lakes is the presence of siderite in the samples of Char han playa, whereas it is absent in the samples of Qinghai lake. Surface Analysis in Archaeology Using the Miniaturized Mössbauer Spectrometer MIMOS II

A miniaturized Mossbauer spectrometer (MIMOS II) which was designed and constructed for extraterrestrial applications, such as iron-containing rock and soil analysis on the planet Mars, has been employed to investigate the iron-containing constituents in the paintings of a Lekythos Greek vase. Greek pottery is commonly painted with black figures. The Mossbauer backscattering spectra recorded with MIMOS II at room temperature show that the hand-painted black figures contain hematite.
